OBJECTIVE: Cervical hematoma (CH) following carotid endarterectomy (CEA) is a serious complication. We reviewed 12 years of CEA for CH requiring operative evacuation to determine its impact on the patient outcome and relationship to perioperative pharmacotherapy.
METHODS: A total of 2643 CEAs were reviewed. In all, 57 CHs requiring operative evacuation were compared to all the patients for general characteristics and with a case-controlled cohort group for pharmacologic details.

The renal handling and effects of an intravenous bolus of frusemide with and without plasma volume expansion with dextran or albumin, and with large variations in plasma albumin concentration, have been studied in five patients with the nephrotic syndrome. Optimal parenteral nutritional support, provided concomitantly with extraordinarily large replacement doses of intravenous iron dextran can be safe, effective, and life-saving for severely anemic patients who cannot or will not accept erythrocyte transfusion. The authors induced experimental hydrothorax in cats by injecting dextran into the pleural cavity under brief N2O anaesthesia. They examined the parameters of cough -- elicited by mechanical stimulation of the airway mucosa -- and blood gas and pH values under normal conditions and after the injection of 50, 100, 200 and 250 ml dextran.
