Chemistry and Structure of Silver Molecular Nanoparticles.

Silver and gold molecular nanoparticles (mNPs) are a relatively new class of molecular materials of fundamental interest. They are high-nuclearity metal-organic compounds, with ligated metal cores, where the different character of bonding in the ligand shell and metal core gives rise to many of the unique properties of these materials. Research has primarily focused on gold mNPs, due to their good stability and the ease with which they may be synthesized and processed. To understand these materials as a general class, however, it will be necessary to broaden research efforts to other metals. G

Design, optimization, and in vitro antimicrobial evaluation of a clove leaf oil nanoemulsion against bovine mastitis-associated pathogens.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Bovine mastitis is one of the most economically significant diseases affecting dairy cattle, leading to substantial losses due to decreased milk yield, higher treatment costs, and lower milk quality. Iodine-based teat disinfectants are commonly used to prevent mastitis but have several limitations, such as milk residue contamination, potential skin irritation, environmental persistence, and concerns about antimicrobial resistance. Plant-derived antimicrobials have thus gained interest as potential alternatives. Clove leaf oil from Syzygium aromaticum (L.) Merr. & L.M. Perry

Randomized, prospective comparison of plate versus intramedullary nail fixation for distal tibia shaft fractures.

OBJECTIVES: Malalignment has been frequently reported after intramedullary stabilization of distal tibia fractures. Nails have also been associated with knee pain in several studies. Historically, plate fixation has resulted in increased risks of infection and nonunion. Our purposes were to compare plate and nail stabilization for distal tibia shaft fractures by assessing complications and secondary procedures. We hypothesized that nails would be associated with more malalignment and nonunion. DESIGN: Randomized, prospective study. SETTING: Level I trauma center. PATIENTS/PARTICIPANTS: One

Air quality in Malaysia: impacts, management issues and future challenges.

OBJECTIVE: Observations have been made on the long-term trends of major air pollutants in Malaysia including nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide, the ozone and total suspended particulate matter (particularly PM10), and sulfur dioxide, emitted from industrial and urban areas from early 1970s until late 1998. METHODOLOGY: The data show that the status of atmospheric environment in Malaysia, in particular in highly industrialized areas such as Klang Valley, was determined both by local and transboundary emissions and could be described as haze and non-haze periods. RESULTS: During the non-haze p

Drying-Induced Chemotypic Modulation and Structure-Volatile Interplay in Zanthoxylum oxyphyllum.

Postharvest drying can differentially volatilize, oxidize, or thermally degrade plant constituents, thereby shifting the relative proportions of chemical classes within an essential oil, a phenomenon termed chemotypic modulation. This study aimed to determine how five drying methods: shade drying (SD), microwave drying (MW), freeze drying (FD), and oven drying at 40°C (OD-40) and 60°C (OD-60) differentially modulate the chemotype, physicochemical properties, antioxidant activity, volatile composition, and essential oil yield of Zanthoxylum oxyphyllum leaves. Significant variations were observe

Open reduction and internal fixation versus casting for highly comminuted and intra-articular fractures of the distal radius (ORCHID): protocol for a randomized clinical multi-center trial.

BACKGROUND: Fractures of the distal radius represent the most common fracture in elderly patients, and often indicate the onset of symptomatic osteoporosis. A variety of treatment options is available, including closed reduction and plaster casting, K-wire-stabilization, external fixation and open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) with volar locked plating. The latter is widely promoted by clinicians and hardware manufacturers. Closed reduction and cast stabilization for six weeks is a simple, convenient, and ubiquitously available intervention. In contrast, ORIF requires hospitalization,

Regional, demographic, and temporal trends in psychoactive substance use-related mental disorder and cancer mortality in U.S. adults: a nationwide CDC WONDER analysis (1999-2020).

BACKGROUND: Cancer remains a major global health burden, with 10 million deaths in 2020 and among the 35 million adults worldwide with psychoactive substance use disorders (SUDs), it is a major contributor to premature mortality. In the U.S., tobacco causes over 30% of cancer deaths and alcohol nearly 5%, highlighting the role of modifiable behaviors. Despite this clinical and economic burden, national long-term data on co-occurring SUDs and cancer mortality remain limited. We therefore analyzed 22 years (1999-2020) of U.S. mortality data from CDC WONDER (Centers for Disease Control and Preven

Stabilizing histamine release in gut mast cells mitigates peripheral and central inflammation after stroke.

Stroke is the most common cause of long-term disability and places a high economic burden on the global healthcare system. Functional outcomes from stroke are largely determined by the extent of ischemic injury, however, there is growing recognition that systemic inflammatory responses also contribute to outcomes. Mast cells (MCs) rapidly respond to injury and release histamine (HA), a pro-inflammatory neurotransmitter that enhances inflammation. The gut serves as a major reservoir of HA. We hypothesized that cromolyn, a mast cell stabilizer that prevents the release of inflammatory mediators,

Molecular Epidemiology of SARS-CoV-2: The Dominant Role of Arginine in Mutations and Infectivity.

Background, Aims, Methods, Results, Conclusions: Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is a global challenge due to its ability to mutate into variants that spread more rapidly than the wild-type virus. The molecular biology of this virus has been extensively studied and computational methods applied are an example paradigm for novel antiviral drug therapies. The rapid evolution of SARS-CoV-2 in the human population is driven, in part, by mutations in the receptor-binding domain (RBD) of the spike (S-) protein, some of which enable tighter binding to angiotensin-converti

Design of Potent Membrane Fusion Inhibitors against SARS-CoV-2, an Emerging Coronavirus with High Fusogenic Activity.

The 2019 coronavirus disease (COVID-19), caused by the emerging severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), has posed serious threats to global public health and economic and social stabilities, calling for the prompt development of therapeutics and prophylactics. In this study, we first verified that SARS-CoV-2 uses human angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) as a cell receptor and that its spike (S) protein mediates high membrane fusion activity. The heptad repeat 1 (HR1) sequence in the S2 fusion protein of SARS-CoV-2 possesses markedly increased α-helicity and thermostab

Institutional violence from police militarization and drug cartel wars as a 'Big Event' and its influence on drug use harms and HIV risk in people who inject drugs on the U.S.-Mexico border.

BACKGROUND: Globally, the US-Mexico Border is one of the largest drug trafficking regions, with Ciudad Juarez (CJ) and El Paso (EP) making up the second-largest border crossing in the world. Border communities are places where the risk of drug use harm and infectious diseases such as HIV are augmented due to the confluence of factors operating across the physical, social, economic and policy environment. Although the two cities are economically, culturally, and socially intertwined, each has distinct criminal justice systems and policy practices aimed at curtailing substance use. Between 2008

The potential impact of public health care denial on the transmission dynamics of COVID-19 in South Africa.

When the demand for public health care increases, governments often prioritize citizens over foreign nationals. In South Africa, limited resources and socio-economic inequalities pose unique challenges to epidemic control. The overcrowding and increasing demand for public healthcare have led to protests by some community groups, which have led to the denial of healthcare to migrants. Denying treatment to some infected individuals has the propensity to lead to an increase in the size of an epidemic. We introduce a novel epidemiological model that incorporates health care denial as a dynamic fac
