Dynamic Arterial Elastance to Predict Mean Arterial Pressure Decrease after Reduction of Vasopressor in Septic Shock Patients.

After fluid status optimization, norepinephrine infusion represents the cornerstone of septic shock treatment. De-escalation of vasopressors should be considered with caution, as hypotension increases the risk of mortality. In this prospective observational study including 42 patients, we assess the role of dynamic elastance (EaDyn), i.e., the ratio between pulse pressure variation and stroke volume variation, which can be measured noninvasively by the MostCare monitoring system, to predict a mean arterial pressure (MAP) drop > 10% 30 min after norepinephrine reduction. Patients were divided i

In vitro elastic cartilage reconstruction using human auricular perichondrial chondroprogenitor cell-derived micro 3D spheroids.

Morphologically stable scaffold-free elastic cartilage tissue is crucial for treating external ear abnormalities. However, establishing adeq … oids similar to auricular hillocks significantly increased the chondrogenic potential. The size and elasticity of the tissue were maintained after craniofacial transplantation in immunodeficient mice, suggesting that the reconstructed tissue was morphologically stable. Our novel tissue reconstruction method may facilitate the development of future treatments …

Is double-crossed retrograde elastic stable intramedullary nailing an alternative method for the treatment of diaphyseal fractures in the adult humerus?

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to compare two techniques for the surgical treatment of diaphyseal fractures in the adult humerus: double-crossed retrograde elastic stable intramedullary nailing (DCR-ESIN) and limited-contact dynamic compression plate (LC-DCP). METHODS: This was a retrospective study conducted at a single hospital. We included 122 patients with diaphyseal fractures of the humerus who had received DCR-ESIN or LC-DCP from January 2011 to January 2017. We compared union rates, union times, disabilities of the arm, shoulder, and hand (DASH) scores at the postoperative 1-yea

Elastic energy storage across speeds during steady-state hopping of desert kangaroo rats (Dipodomys deserti).

Small bipedal hoppers, including kangaroo rats, are not thought to benefit from substantial elastic energy storage and return during hopping. However, recent species-specific material properties research suggests that, despite relative thickness, the ankle extensor tendons of these small hoppers are considerably more compliant than had been assumed. With faster locomotor speeds demanding higher forces, a lower tendon stiffness suggests greater tendon deformation and thus a greater potential for elastic energy storage and return with increasing speed. Using the elastic modulus values specific t

Do Psychological Factors Influence the Elastic Properties of Soft Tissue in Subjects with Fibromyalgia? A Cross-Sectional Observational Study.

Nowadays, there is evidence related to the impact that psychological factors have on symptoms, specifically vegetative ones, and on the autonomic nervous system in patients with fibromyalgia (FM). However, there are no studies to correlate the level of association between psychological factors and the elastic properties of tissue in the FM population. Elastic properties of soft tissue reflect age- and disease-related changes in the mechanical functions of soft tissue, and mechanical failure has a profound impact on morbidity and mortality. The study has a cross-sectional observational design w

Assessment of right ventricular function in advanced heart failure with nonischemic dilated cardiomyopathy: insights of right ventricular elastance.

BACKGROUND: The right ventriculoarterial coupling (R-V/A), a measure of right ventricular systolic dysfunction (RVSD) adaptation/maladaptation to chronic overload, and consequent pulmonary hypertension, has been little investigated in nonischemic dilated cardiomyopathy (NIDCM). We examined the correlates of R-V/A and traditional echocardiographic indices of RVSD, over the spectrum of pulmonary hypertension and tertiles of mean pulmonary artery pressures (PAPm). METHODS: In 2016-2017, we studied 81 consecutive patients for heart transplant/advanced heart failure. Inclusion criteria were NIDCM,

Opening the cocaine economy by providing within-session access to a cheaper source of cocaine makes demand for it more elastic.

Previous studies found that opening the cocaine economy by providing postsession access to cocaine had no effect on animals' demand for cocaine, whereas postsession access to saccharin or food made demand for these nondrug reinforcers more elastic. It is possible that there was no effect of economy type on cocaine taking in these earlier studies because of the delay to the postsession cocaine in the open economy. The present experiment tested whether forming an open economy by providing additional within-session cocaine, rather than postsession cocaine, would make rats' demand for cocaine more

Assessment of peritoneal elastic laminal invasion improves survival stratification of pT3 and pT4a colorectal cancer: a meta-analysis.

Evaluating peritoneal elastic laminal invasion (ELI) has been proposed as an additional assessment for pT3 colorectal cancers (CRC). Its clinical significance has not yet been established. We performed a meta-analysis to investigate the prognostic impact of ELI assessment for subcategorisation of pT3 CRC. We performed a search in three electronic databases. HR and its 95% CI for overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) were calculated using the random effects model weighted by the inverse variance method. We identified six studies that met inclusion criteria out of an original 703

Angularly resolved, finely sampled elastic scattering measurements of single cells: requirements for robust organelle size extractions.

Angularly resolved elastic light scattering is an established technique for probing the average size of organelles in biological tissue and cellular ensembles. Focusing of the incident light to illuminate no more than one cell at a time restricts the minimum forward-scattering angle θmin that can be detected. Series of simulated single-cell angular-scattering patterns have been generated to explore how size estimates vary as a function of θmin. At a setting of θmin  =  20  deg, the size estimates hop unstably between multiple minima in the solution space as simulated noise (mimicking experimen

From pullout-techniques to modular elastic stable chest repair: the evolution of an open technique in the correction of pectus excavatum.

BACKGROUND: Traditionally open procedures have been replaced by minimally invasive techniques in the correction of pectus excavatum. Efforts to improve the extent of mobilization of the chest wall and its stabilization have led to constant modifications. There is currently no consensus about the best procedure for correction of pectus excavatum. METHODS: Based on the contributions of a single institution for the last 60 years, we present the various strategies used for the correction of pectus excavatum and the evolution of operational procedures. These approaches are compared with those perf

3D Deformation Patterns of S Shaped Elastic Rods as a Pathogenesis Model for Spinal Deformity in Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis.

Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is a three-dimensional (3D) deformity of the spinal column in pediatric population. The primary cause of scoliosis remains unknown. The lack of such understanding has hampered development of effective preventive methods for management of this disease. A long-held assumption in pathogenesis of AIS is that the upright spine in human plays an important role in induction of scoliosis. Here, the variations in the sagittal curve of the scoliotic and non-scoliotic pediatric spines were used to study whether specific sagittal curves, under physiological loadings,

Reliability of effective arterial elastance using peripheral arterial pressure as surrogate for left ventricular end-systolic pressure.

To compare the effective arterial elastance (Ea) obtained from the arterial pressure with Ea calculated from left-ventricular (LV) pressure-volume analysis. Experimental study. LV pressure-volume data was obtained with a conductance catheter and arterial pressures were measured via a fluid-filled catheter placed in the proximal aorta, femoral and radial arteries. Ea was calculated as LV end-systolic pressure (ESP)/stroke volume (SV). Experimental protocol consisted sequentially changing afterload (phenylephrine/nitroprusside), preload (bleeding/fluid), and contractility (esmolol/dobutamine). 9
