Impact of road traffic noise on obesity measures: Observational study of three European cohorts.

BACKGROUND: Environmental stressors such as transport noise may contribute to development of obesity through increased levels of stress hormones, sleep deprivation and endocrine disruption. Epidemiological evidence supporting an association of road traffic noise with obesity markers is still relatively scant and confined to certain geographical regions. We aimed to examine the cross-sectional associations between road traffic noise and obesity markers in three large European cohorts involving nearly 500,000 individuals. METHODS: Three population-based cohorts (UK Biobank, Lifelines, HUNT3) we

Obesity-driven thyroid cancer burden in middle-aged and older populations: temporal trends and projected trajectories based on the Global Burden of Disease study.

INTRODUCTION: High body mass index (BMI) in middle-aged and older individuals (≥40 years) is a leading risk factor for thyroid cancer-related morbidity and mortality; however, the quantifiable impact of elevated BMI on disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) and mortality in ageing populations remains underexplored. This study comprehensively evaluated the global burden of thyroid cancer attributable to elevated BMI by integrating past epidemiological trends, demographic variability and risk attribution models, and provided relevant projected trajectories using data from the Global Burden of Di

An assisted diagnostic and prognostic model for endometrial cancer using 36 serological markers and clinical variables from 562 patients.

Endometrial carcinoma (EC) has demonstrated a concerning epidemiological trajectory. Current evaluation systems for EC are limited to postoperative analysis, necessitating the development of a preoperative risk stratification model. Researchers aimed to create a machine learning-based approach using multiple serological markers and clinical variables to predict EC characteristics. A dataset of 508 EC patients and 54 patients with endometrial atypical hyperplasia (EAH) was utilized. Seven supervised machine learning classifiers were evaluated, with the Random Forest classifier being the most ef

A Deep Learning-Enhanced Compartmental Model and Its Application in Modeling Omicron in China.

The mainstream compartmental models require stochastic parameterization to estimate the transmission parameters between compartments, whose calculation depend upon detailed statistics on epidemiological characteristics, which are expensive, economically and resource-wise, to collect. In addition, infectious diseases spread in three dimensions: temporal, spatial, and mobile, i.e., they affect a population through not only the time progression of infection, but also the geographic distribution and physical mobility of the population. However, the parameterization process for the mainstream compa

Studies of Streptococcus anginosus Virulence in Dictyostelium discoideum and Galleria mellonella Models.

For many years, Streptococcus anginosus has been considered a commensal colonizing the oral cavity, as well as the gastrointestinal and genitourinary tracts. However, recent epidemiological and clinical data designate this bacterium as an emerging opportunistic pathogen. Despite the reported pathogenicity of S. anginosus, the molecular mechanism underpinning its virulence is poorly described. Therefore, our goal was to develop and optimize efficient and simple infection models that can be applied to examine the virulence of S. anginosus and to study host-pathogen interactions. Using 23 S. angi

Comparison and validation of two mathematical models for the impact of mass drug administration on Ascaris lumbricoides and hookworm infection.

The predictions of two mathematical models of the transmission dynamics of Ascaris lumbricoides and hookworm infection and the impact of mass drug administration (MDA) are compared, using data from India. One model has an age structured partial differential equation (PDE) deterministic framework for the distribution of parasite numbers per host and sexual mating. The second model is an individual-based stochastic model. Baseline data acquired prior to treatment are used to estimate key transmission parameters, and forward projections are made, given the known MDA population coverage. Predictio

Elucidating transmission dynamics and host-parasite-vector relationships for rodent-borne Bartonella spp. in Madagascar.

Bartonella spp. are erythrocytic bacteria transmitted via arthropod vectors, which infect a broad range of vertebrate hosts, including humans. We investigated transmission dynamics and host-parasite-vector relationships for potentially zoonotic Bartonella spp. in invasive Rattus rattus hosts and associated arthropod ectoparasites in Madagascar. We identified five distinct species of Bartonella (B. elizabethae 1, B. elizabethae 2, B. phoceensis 1, B. rattimassiliensis 1, and B. tribocorum 1) infecting R. rattus rodents and their ectoparasites. We fit standard epidemiological models to species-s…

Citrus Flavonoids as Regulators of Lipoprotein Metabolism and Atherosclerosis.

Citrus flavonoids are polyphenolic compounds with significant biological properties. This review summarizes recent advances in understanding the ability of citrus flavonoids to modulate lipid metabolism, other metabolic parameters related to the metabolic syndrome, and atherosclerosis. Citrus flavonoids, including naringenin, hesperitin, nobiletin, and tangeretin, have emerged as potential therapeutics for the treatment of metabolic dysregulation. Epidemiological studies reveal an association between the intake of citrus flavonoid-containing foods and a decreased incidence of cardiovascular di

Data-model fusion to better understand emerging pathogens and improve infectious disease forecasting.

Ecologists worldwide are challenged to contribute solutions to urgent and pressing environmental problems by forecasting how populations, communities, and ecosystems will respond to global change. Rising to this challenge requires organizing ecological information derived from diverse sources and formally assimilating data with models of ecological processes. The study of infectious disease has depended on strategies for integrating patterns of observed disease incidence with mechanistic process models since John Snow first mapped cholera cases around a London water pump in 1854. Still, zoonot

[Comprehensive understanding of viral diseases by field, molecular, and theoretical studies].

Viral diseases are responsible for substantial morbidity and mortality and continue to be of great concern. To ensure better control of viral infections, I have been tackling the issue as a medical doctor, an academic researcher, and a public health officer. Especially, I have studied respiratory viruses, such as the influenza virus, from the perspectives of molecular virology, theoretical modeling, and field epidemiology. RNA biology and its involvement with viral life-cycle and pathogenicity are central topics of molecular study, while mathematical models of transmission dynamics and phyloge

Predicting Infectious Disease Incidence After Flooding Using Artificial Intelligence Models: A Retrospective Pre-Post Cohort Study Using Routinely Collected EHR Data.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Natural disasters, particularly floods, significantly increase infectious disease risk through environmental contamination and healthcare system disruption. Despite well-documented flood-disease associations, predictive models for post-disaster epidemiological surveillance remain limited. We aimed to develop and validate machine learning algorithms to predict infectious disease incidence following flood events. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective pre-post cohort study using routinely collected electronic health records from Firuzkuh County health centers, comparing a 30

The optimization of harm reduction services in Massachusetts through the use of GIS: Location-allocation analyses, 2019-2021.

BACKGROUND: Fatal opioid-related overdoses (OOD) continue to be a leading cause of preventable death across the US. Opioid Overdose Education and Naloxone Distribution programs (OENDs) play a vital role in addressing morbidity and mortality associated with opioid use, but access to such services is often inequitable. We utilized a geographic information system (GIS) and spatial analytical methods to inform prioritized placement of OEND services in Massachusetts. METHODS: We obtained addresses for OEND sites from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and address-level fatal OOD data fo

Impact of voluntary testing on infectious disease epidemiology: A game theoretic approach.

The World Health Organization recommends test-and-treat interventions to curb and even eliminate epidemics of HIV, viral hepatitis, and sexually transmitted infections (e.g., chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis and trichomoniasis). Epidemic models show these goals are achievable, provided the participation of individuals in test-and-treat interventions is sufficiently high. We combine epidemic models and game theoretic models to describe individual's decisions to get tested for infectious diseases within certain epidemiological contexts, and, implicitly, their voluntary participation to test-and-tr

Modelling mass drug administration strategies for reducing scabies burden in Monrovia, Liberia.

Scabies is a parasitic infestation with high global burden. Mass drug administrations (MDAs) are recommended for communities with a scabies prevalence of >10%. Quantitative analyses are needed to demonstrate the likely effectiveness of MDA recommendations. In this study, we developed an agent-based model of scabies transmission calibrated to demographic and epidemiological data from Monrovia. We used this model to compare the effectiveness of MDA scenarios for achieving scabies elimination and reducing scabies burden, as measured by time until recrudescence following delivery of an MDA and dis

Alzheimer's disease and environmental exposure to lead: the epidemiologic evidence and potential role of epigenetics.

Several lines of evidence indicate that the etiology of late-onset Alzheimer's disease (LOAD) is complex, with significant contributions from both genes and environmental factors. Recent research suggests the importance of epigenetic mechanisms in defining the relationship between environmental exposures and LOAD. In epidemiologic studies of adults, cumulative lifetime lead (Pb) exposure has been associated with accelerated declines in cognition. In addition, research in animal models suggests a causal association between Pb exposure during early life, epigenetics, and LOAD. There are multiple

Exploring the effective strategies for allocating limited resources to minimize cholera outbreaks.

Despite the near-complete elimination of cholera in many developing countries, numerous lower-income countries continue to face recurring epidemics. Although extensive research has been conducted on cholera transmission dynamics and control, a comprehensive approach to managing outbreaks in resource-limited settings remains elusive. This study introduces a cholera epidemic model incorporating a resource allocation strategy to balance efforts between reducing transmission and enhancing recovery rates. The model is validated using weekly cholera data from the resurgence in Haiti (October 2022-Ma

Predictive analysis across spatial scales links zoonotic malaria to deforestation.

The complex transmission ecologies of vector-borne and zoonotic diseases pose challenges to their control, especially in changing landscapes. Human incidence of zoonotic malaria ( Plasmodium knowlesi) is associated with deforestation although mechanisms are unknown. Here, a novel application of a method for predicting disease occurrence that combines machine learning and statistics is used to identify the key spatial scales that define the relationship between zoonotic malaria cases and environmental change. Using data from satellite imagery, a case-control study, and a cross-sectional survey,

Constructing compact Takagi-Sugeno rule systems: identification of complex interactions in epidemiological data.

The Takagi-Sugeno (TS) fuzzy rule system is a widely used data mining technique, and is of particular use in the identification of non-linear interactions between variables. However the number of rules increases dramatically when applied to high dimensional data sets (the curse of dimensionality). Few robust methods are available to identify important rules while removing redundant ones, and this results in limited applicability in fields such as epidemiology or bioinformatics where the interaction of many variables must be considered. Here, we develop a new parsimonious TS rule system. We pro

The electronic fight against the schistosomes.

A DOS-compatible model for use on personal computers has been constructed for teaching in parasite epidemiology. The program is based on the Macdonald model of schistosome dynamics and enables simulation of the effect of a control campaign on a human worm load by reducing four transmission factors in the parasite life-cycle: (1) egg contamination, (2) snail lifetime, (3) exposure to cercariae and (4) adult worm lifetime.
