Awareness of Eating Disorders, Nutritional Knowledge, and Emotionally Driven Eating Among Polish Adolescents Aged 15-17-A Pilot Study.

Background/Objectives: Despite the growing awareness of nutrition and the popularity of healthy lifestyles among adolescents, disordered eating behaviors-such as anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder (BED), and avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID)-remain significant public health concerns. ARFID, officially recognized only in 2013, is still poorly understood among youth. This study aimed to assess the relationship between adolescents' nutritional knowledge, emotional regulation, media influence, and eating behaviors. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducte

Weight-based victimization, eating behaviors, and weight-related health in Sexual and Gender Minority Adolescents.

Weight-based victimization (WBV) is a common form of bullying associated with maladaptive eating, and poor weight-related health. Although sexual and gender minority (SGM) youth experience a number of eating and weight-related health disparities, the link between WBV and these outcomes has not been investigated in this vulnerable population. Data came from the LGBTQ Teen Study, a national survey of SGM adolescents. Participants provided data to assess body mass index (BMI), WBV, sexual identity, gender identity, dieting, binge eating, eating to cope with stress, weight control behaviors, exerc

Mealtime duration in problem and non-problem eaters.

Young children commonly encounter difficulties at mealtimes, which are important to address early to avoid the maintenance of problematic eating behaviour. Amongst these are drawn-out meals, which some research has associated with more mealtime problems. However, research on meal duration, and therefore guidelines for appropriate meal length, is lacking. This research aimed to compare the meal duration of problem-eaters and controls, and to examine changes to meal length amongst problem-eaters following a parenting intervention. The mealtimes of 96 problem-eaters and 105 controls were examined

[Correlations between attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and obesity - a systematic review of the literature].

Recent studies suggest a possible correlation between Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and obesity. In order to explore the topic a systematic review of the literature was performed excluding case reports, non-empirical studies, and studies not using the ADHD diagnostic criteria. Recent studies suggests that obese patients referred to obesity clinics may present themselves with a higher that predicted prevalence od ADHD. Moreover, all studies indicate that subjects with ADHD have higher body weight than expected. However, data on the prevalence of obesity in subjects with ADHD a

Mothers misunderstand questions on a feeding questionnaire.

Feeding questionnaires have not consistently identified mothers' beliefs or behaviors associated with preschool children becoming overweight. One reason may be that mothers do not understand the constructs in the questions in the way intended by the developers of the questionnaire. This study assessed items on the Preschooler Feeding Questionnaire (PFQ)--a maternal questionnaire about feeding practices and beliefs relating to the weight status of preschoolers. Seven audio-taped interviews were conducted with African American mothers of 24-59 month-old children in Chicago enrolled in the Specia

FEEDSETUP: feeding difficulties spectrum evaluation and treatment up-to-date proposal.

OBJECTIVE: To organize current knowledge and propose a comprehensive, treatment-focused classification system, called FEDSETUP, that guides clinicians through a stepwise, multidisciplinary approach to pediatric feeding difficulties, emphasizing intervention intensity matched to clinical need and severity. SOURCES: Development of the FEEDSETUP framework was grounded in a systematic approach to evidence synthesis, following PRISMA principles adapted for narrative framework development. Given the multidimensional nature of pediatric feeding difficulties-spanning medical, nutritional, behavioral,

3D directional tuning in the orofacial sensorimotor cortex during natural feeding and drinking.

Directional tongue movements are crucial for feeding and speech, ensuring proper food positioning for chewing and swallowing, as well as accurate sound production. While directional tuning in the arm region of the sensorimotor cortex during reaching tasks is well-studied, little is known about how 3D tongue direction is encoded in the orofacial sensorimotor cortex (OSMCx) during natural behaviors. Understanding this neural representation has important implications for rehabilitating individuals with orolingual dysfunctions. This study examines the directional tuning and population dynamics in

Food deprivation explains effects of mouthbrooding on ovaries and steroid hormones, but not brain neuropeptide and receptor mRNAs, in an African cichlid fish.

Feeding behavior and reproduction are coordinately regulated by the brain via neurotransmitters, circulating hormones, and neuropeptides. Reduced feeding allows animals to engage in other behaviors important for fitness, including mating and parental care. Some fishes cease feeding for weeks at a time in order to provide care to their young by brooding them inside the male or female parent's mouth. Maternal mouthbrooding is known to impact circulating hormones and subsequent reproductive cycles, but neither the full effects of food deprivation nor the neural mechanisms are known. Here we ask w…

Flocks in focus: Automated video analysis of spatial behavior for stress detection in aviary-housed laying hens.

Understanding stress responses in laying hens is crucial for improving welfare in commercial systems, yet real-time behavioral indicators remain underexplored. This study evaluated the use of automated spatial behavior monitoring to detect stress-induced behavioral changes in commercial-density laying hen flocks housed in aviary systems. The objectives were to (1) visualize and quantify vertical movement patterns and litter use over time and across flocks, and (2) assess behavioral changes in response to 3 stress contexts: visual (predatory bird), auditory (thunder sound), and frustrative (del

Focus on communication: improving interaction between staff and residents who have severe or profound mental retardation.

The purpose of the present research project was to examine change in interactive behaviors between staff and residents of facilities that serve individuals with mental retardation. Twelve staff members were trained using an adapted component of the Nursing Child Assessment Satellite Training model, the Mental Retardation/Developmental Disabilities Adaptation of the Nursing Child Assessment Feeding Scale. Data indicated some slight increases in positive interactive staff behaviors with some small indications of generalization to another task and maintenance over a 6-month period in one setting.

Tumor-derived cytokine enhances bitter sensing through remote control of bitter taste neurons via the Upd3/Spz5/Toll-6 axis in Drosophila.

The sense of taste is essential as it governs appetite and the feeding process. However, it is largely unknown whether and how tumors in a h … used behavioral hypersensitivity to bitter tastants. Our findings reveal how tumors affect animals' feeding behavior as well as the underlying mechanism. Our findings also suggest that such tumor-induced behavioral alterations are likely conserved across species.

Effects of homeopathic remedy supplementation on performance, blood parameters, and behavior of pigs under vaccination and regrouping stress conditions.

In the modern swine production systems, pigs are often challenged with regrouping and vaccination, which may negatively affect growth performance and behavior of pigs. The objective was to test the hypothesis that a supplemental homeopathic remedy enhances growth performance in nursery pigs by improving hematological parameters and reducing stress from vaccination and regrouping. In a 28-day feeding experiment, 94 pigs with an initial mean body weight of 16.5 kg (SD = 1.7) were allotted to three dietary treatments. The basal diet was mainly based on corn, soybean meal, fish meal, and dried whe

Early Feeding Practices and Weight Status at One Year of Age: A Comparison of Hispanic Immigrant Mother-Infant Dyads with Participants of the Infant Feeding Practices Study II.

BACKGROUND: Hispanic preschoolers have higher rates of BMI ≥85th percentile than any other racial/ethnic group. To identify underpinnings of this disparity, we compared early feeding practices and subsequent weight status for a sample of infants of low-income, Hispanic immigrant mothers with participants from the Infant Feeding Practices Study II (IFPS II). METHODS: Proyecto de Bebés Hispanos Saludables (PBHS) collected medical record data for mother-infant dyads (n = 550) from a large pediatric clinic for low-income families and merged it with IFPS II data (n = 1502) to compare early feeding

An analysis of excessive running in the development of activity anorexia.

Food restriction combined with activity wheel access produces activity anorexia: a combination of excessive running, reduced food intake and rapid weight loss. Temporal distributions of running in activity anorexia were examined in a reversal design with one of 2 x 2 x 2 factorial combinations (pelleted-vs-powdered food x deprivation x wheel access) as the treatment condition. Wheel revolutions were recorded in 30 min intervals; body weights, food and water intakes were measured daily. Only wheel access combined with food deprivation reliably produced activity anorexia. Excessive running occur

Association of Early Feeding Practices with Gastrointestinal Symptoms in Infants During the First 12 Months: A Multicenter Prospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs) are highly prevalent among infants. Exclusive breastfeeding has been consistently associated with better gastrointestinal health. However, current evidence regarding the associations between early feeding practices and infant gastrointestinal development remains limited. OBJECTIVES: To examine the associations between early feeding practices at 1 month of age and gastrointestinal symptoms and overall gastrointestinal burden in infants during the first 12 months of life. METHODS: In this multicenter prospective cohort study, 669 health

Parental Concerns about Newborn Feeding Post Hospital Discharge.

BACKGROUND: Post hospital discharge newborn feeding education mostly focuses on breastfeeding and is primarily targeted at term infants. Preterm and late-preterm infants are at risk for poor feeding postdischarge, and feeding challenges are common after discharge from the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Families often have questions about feeding their infants after hospital discharge. PURPOSE: The goal of this project was to collect data on what questions parents have about feeding their baby after discharge and what strategies may be helpful to improve feeding experiences. These data w

Diagnosing gastro-oesophageal reflux disease or lactose intolerance in babies who cry a lot in the first few months overlooks feeding problems.

This paper explores two areas in which the translation of research into practice may be improved in the management of cry-fuss behaviours in the first few months of life. Firstly, babies who cry excessively are often prescribed proton pump inhibitors, despite evidence that gastro-oesophageal reflux disease is very rarely a cause. The inaccuracy of commonly used explanatory mechanisms, the side-effects of acid-suppressive medications, and the failure to identify treatable problems, including feeding difficulty when the diagnosis of 'reflux' is applied, are discussed. Secondly, crying breastfed
