There is growing interest in non-smoking non-drinking (NSND) patients presenting with oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). There are, however, few published reports of OSCC in the elderly. We describe a subgroup of elderly NSND patients presenting with OSCC. Patients with SCC of the oral cavity were retrospectively assessed from the Head and Neck Oncology Tumour Stream database of the Royal Melbourne Hospital. Epidemiological and clinical data for 169 consecutive patients were reviewed and analysed. NSND patients were more likely to be females with a higher median age at presentation. They wer

The zebrafish (Danio rerio) has been widely used as a vertebrate animal model in neurobiological. The zebrafish has several unique advantages that make it well suited for live microscopic imaging, including its fast development, large transparent embryos that develop outside the mother, and the availability of a large selection of mutant strains. As the genome of zebrafish has been fully sequenced it is comparatively easier to carry out large scale forward genetic screening in zebrafish to investigate relevant human diseases, from neurological disorders like epilepsy, Alzheimer's disease, and

In 2023, the HIV-1 pandemic claimed around 630,000 lives worldwide due to AIDS-related complications. Its burden is significantly heavier in Sub-Saharan Africa, where an increased HIV-1 genetic diversity is common, which increases the risk of resistance to antiretroviral (ARV) drugs. This study aims to update the molecular epidemiology of HIV-1 in Angola, focusing specifically on the gag gene, which is often overlooked, and to assess the potential viability of lenacapavir (LEN)-based ARV therapy in the region. A total of 243 blood samples were collected from ARV-naïve, HIV-infected patients at

Phelan-McDermid syndrome (PMS, OMIM# 606232) results from either different rearrangements at the distal region of the long arm of chromosome 22 (22q13.3) or pathogenic sequence variants in the SHANK3 gene. SHANK3 codes for a structural protein that plays a central role in the formation of the postsynaptic terminals and the maintenance of synaptic structures. Clinically, patients with PMS often present with global developmental delay, absent or severely delayed speech, neonatal hypotonia, minor dysmorphic features, and autism spectrum disorders (ASD), among other findings. Here, we describe a c

MOTIVATION: The multimodal data fusion analysis becomes another important field for brain disease detection and increasing researches concentrate on using neural network algorithms to solve a range of problems. However, most current neural network optimizing strategies focus on internal nodes or hidden layer numbers, while ignoring the advantages of external optimization. Additionally, in the multimodal data fusion analysis of brain science, the problems of small sample size and high-dimensional data are often encountered due to the difficulty of data collection and the specialization of brain

INTRODUCTION: Short stature is one of the most common reasons for referral to a pediatric endocrinologist and can result from many etiologies. However, many patients with short stature do not receive a definitive diagnosis.
OBJECTIVE: To ascertain whether integrating targeted bioinformatics searches of electronic health records (EHRs) combined with genomic studies could identify patients with previously undiagnosed rare genetic etiologies of short stature. We focused on a specific rare phenotypic subgroup: patients with short stature and elevated IGF-I levels.
METHODS: We performed a cross-s

BACKGROUND: Wild birds are the major reservoir hosts for influenza A viruses (AIVs) and have been implicated in the emergence of pandemic events in livestock and human populations. Understanding how AIVs spread within and across continents is therefore critical to the development of successful strategies to manage and reduce the impact of influenza outbreaks. In North America many bird species undergo seasonal migratory movements along a North-South axis, thereby providing opportunities for viruses to spread over long distances. However, the role played by such avian flyways in shaping the gen

BACKGROUND: Joubert syndrome and related disorders (JSRD) is a clinically and genetically heterogeneous condition with autosomal recessive or X-linked inheritance, which share a distinctive neuroradiological hallmark, the so-called molar tooth sign. JSRD is classified into six clinical subtypes based on associated variable multiorgan involvement. To date, 21 causative genes have been identified in JSRD, which makes genetic diagnosis difficult.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report here a case of a 28-year-old Japanese woman diagnosed with JS with oculorenal defects with a novel compound heterozygous m

OBJECTIVES: Polymyositis (PM) and dermatomyositis (DM) form part of the idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIMs). The chemokine monocyte chemotactic protein-1 (MCP-1) is expressed at sites of the T cell inflammatory response in the IIMs. We thus investigate whether genetic markers in the MCP-1 gene confer disease susceptibility for the development of PM and DM.
METHODS: DNA samples were analysed from a group of 195 UK Caucasian IIM patients, comprising 103 PM and 92 DM. Their results were compared with those of 162 ethnically matched controls. The polymorphic positions of three single nucleo

The segments are genetically developed using a standard technique of genetic algorithms (GAs). The two fundamental GA constructs, namely a topology of a chromosome and a fitness function governing the optimization process are discussed in detail. The chromosome being coded as a series of floating point numbers contains the endpoints of …

BACKGROUND: Schwannomatosis is a late-onset tumor predisposition syndrome associated with the development of many different types of malignancies. A relevant genetic mechanism can be explained by three mutational events. The first-hit mutation is a germline mutation, and the SMARCB1 mutation on chromosome 22 is the most well-known genetic abnormality in patients with schwannomatosis. LZTR1 is another major predisposing gene in 22q-related schwannomatosis that lacks SMARCB1 variants. Although these two variants account for the occurrence of most familiar schwannomatoses, the genetic causes of s

Keratoconus (KC) is a noninflammatory, bilateral, progressive corneal stromal thinning disorder that leads to corneal ectasia, central anterior corneal stromal scarring, irregular myopic astigmatism, and reduced visual acuity. Fuchs endothelial corneal dystrophy (FECD) is bilateral, sporadic, or autosomal dominant, non-inflammatory, dystrophy involving the corneal endothelium. As the dystrophy evolves, the major complaints include glare, halos, and reduced visual acuity. Very rarely, both the pathologies can co-exist in the same patient. After the initial report of KC with FECD, there have bee

Clear inter-individual differences exist in the response to C. trachomatis (CT) infections and reproductive tract complications in women. Host genetic variation like single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) have been associated with differences in response to CT infection, and SNPs might be used as a genetic component in a tubal-pathology predicting algorithm. Our aim was to confirm the role of four genes by investigating proven associated SNPs in the susceptibility and severity of a CT infection. A total of 1201 women from five cohorts were genotyped and analyzed for TLR2 + 2477 G > A, NOD1 + 3

INTRODUCTION: There are now a number genes, known to be associated with familial primary brain calcification (PFBC), causing the so called 'Fahr's' disease or syndrome. These are SCL20A2, PDGFB, PDGFRB and XPR1. In this systematic review, we analyse the clinical and radiological features reported in genetically confirmed cases with PFBC. We have additionally reviewed pseudohypoparathyroidism which is a close differential diagnosis of PFBC in clinical presentation and is also genetically determined.
METHODS: We performed a Medline search, from 1st Jan 2012 through to 7th November 2016, for pub

Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is a dominant autosomic genetic disorder, with a birth incidence of 1 in 2500-3000. Diagnosis is difficult because of the size of gene NF1 that has few hot-spots sites, the absence of a clear genotype-phenotype relation, and a heterogeneous clinical manifestation. A NF1 suspected case from Jujuy province was analyzed by multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification (MLPA). Mestizo female teenage (Amerindian/European), with a maxilar osteoma, lumbar lordosis, cutaneous neurofibromas and café au lait spots. MLPA detected an alteration in exon 13 of the NF1 gene.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Autoimmune lymphoproliferative syndrome (ALPS) is a disorder of disrupted lymphocyte homeostasis, resulting from mutations in the Fas apoptotic pathway. Clinical manifestations include lymphadenopathy, splenomegaly, and autoimmune cytopenias. A number of new insights have improved the understanding of the genetics and biology of ALPS. These will be discussed in this review.
RECENT FINDINGS: A number of key observations have been made recently that better define the pathophysiology of ALPS, including the characterization of somatic FAS variant ALPS, the identification of hap

Thalassemia syndromes result from a significant reduction in the synthesis of globin chains (α, β, γ, δ). An imbalance between α- and non-α-globin chains underlies β-thalassemia. α-Globin tetramers accumulate and precipitate in erythroid precursors (ineffective erythropoiesis). Hemolysis also plays an important role, shortening the erythrocyte lifespan. α-Thalassemia syndromes are caused by approximately 200 deletions and point mutations, as well as rare large deletions. More than 350 mutations have been identified in β-thalassemia syndromes, the majority of which are point mutations, with rar
