Characterizing Diversity of Lactobacilli Associated with Severe Early Childhood Caries: A Study Protocol.

Lactobacilli have been consistently associated with dental caries for decades; however, knowledge of this group of bacteria in the etiology of the disease is limited to quantitative elucidation. Nowadays, explicit identification of oral Lactobacillus species is possible, despite their taxonomic complexity. Here we describe a combined approach involving both cultivation and genetic methods to ascertain and characterize the diversity and abundance of the Lactobacillus population in the oral cavities of children with severe early childhood caries (S-ECC). Eighty 3- to 6-year-old children (40 S-EC

Public interest in retinal detachment in the United States: a Google Trends analysis.

BACKGROUND: Rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RD) is a vision-threatening condition requiring timely diagnosis and treatment, yet population-level public interest and information-seeking behavior is difficult to assess using traditional utilization data alone. This study evaluated temporal and geographic patterns of public interest in retinal detachment in the United States and contextualized this interest relative to retina specialist availability. METHODS: In this retrospective observational study, we queried Google Trends for RD-related search terms in the United States from 2008 to 2025.

Identification of musculoskeletal disorders in medically underserved regions of South America and Vietnam.

CONTEXT: Musculoskeletal disorders have been implicated as the leading cause of disability throughout the world, representing a high percentage of the disease burden in many nations. Anecdotal evidence suggests that musculoskeletal pain has become increasingly pervasive, especially among rural populations of developing countries. OBJECTIVE: To characterize specific musculoskeletal disorders in medically underserved regions where these issues have not yet been thoroughly examined. METHODS: The sample comprised adult residents receiving care during brief medical outreach trips to South America

Self-Perceived Preparedness Needs Among Caregivers of Veterans With and Without Dementia: An Exploratory Study Using Open-Ended Survey Data.

BACKGROUND: Caregivers' self-perceived preparedness for caregiving influences care recipients' and caregivers' emotional health, and care recipients' aging in place. Dementia's unique, long, and progressive nature compared to other age-related illnesses, along with associated behavioral symptoms and personality changes, may cause caregivers' preparedness to vary significantly from that of those caring for patients with other chronic conditions. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to describe and compare specific domains and tasks in which family caregivers of veterans with and without dementia report

Particulate versus integrated evolution of the upper body in late pleistocene humans: a test of two models.

Evolutionary biologists are largely polarized in their approaches to integrating microevolutionary and macroevolutionary processes. Neo-Darwinians typically seek to identify population-level selective and genetic processes that culminate in macroevolutionary events. Epigeneticists and structuralists, on the other hand, emphasize developmental constraints on the action of natural selection, and highlight the role of epigenetic shifts in producing evolutionary change in morphology. Accordingly, the ways in which these paradigms view and address morphological contrasts between classes of related

BACKGROUND: In France, actually, around 70 000 drug addicts are treated with buprenorphine available as sublingual tablets. Clinical studies have demonstrated the clinical efficacity of buprenorphine for opiate addiction. But, it has been reported that some of them injected buprenorphine. Some inquiries have suggested measured with 10% to 40% injectors. To use buprenorphine tablets for injections have had heavy sanitary consequences (4). OBJECTIVES: To know the use buprenorphine context in our population and to analyse the circumstances and outcomes of buprenorphine injection for drug addicts

Nurse Practitioner-Led Integrated Rapid Access to HIV Prevention for People Who Inject Drugs (iRaPID): Protocol for a Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: The ongoing volatile opioid epidemic remains a significant public health concern, alongside continued outbreaks of HIV and hepatitis C virus among people who inject drugs. The limited access to and scale-up of medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD) among people who inject drugs, coupled with multilevel barriers to pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) uptake, makes it imperative to integrate evidence-based risk reduction and HIV prevention strategies in innovative ways. To address this need, we developed an integrated rapid access to HIV prevention program for people who inject drugs

Intent to receive HPV vaccine and reasons for not vaccinating among unvaccinated adolescent and young women: findings from the 2006-2008 National Survey of Family Growth.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: HPV vaccine coverage for females has increased in the U.S., although challenges to achieving high coverage remain. HPV vaccine coverage continues to lag behind that of other routinely recommended adolescent vaccines and these gaps in coverage are widening. To inform strategies to improve uptake, we explore correlates of vaccine intention and describe reasons for refusing HPV vaccination among unvaccinated females in a nationally representative sample of adolescents and young adults during early stages of HPV vaccine availability. METHODS: In 2007-2008, 1243 females age

Age-related differences in the severity of sexual dysfunction symptoms and psychological distress in individuals with multiple sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Sexual dysfunction (SD) is a common symptom for many with multiple sclerosis (MS). However, SD research in general appears to often overlook young adults within their samples, which can be a major issue for better understanding and treatment for the MS population. Few studies have compared age-related differences in distress in response to physical disability. Research has also found that many people diagnosed with MS do not discuss any SD struggles with their providers. The present study hopes to see whether age-related differences exist in the reporting of the levels of primary,

The impact of COVID-19 on general vaccine acceptance in low- and middle-income countries: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic caused a major decline in childhood vaccination, especially in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). However, its specific impact on vaccine hesitancy in the immediate post-pandemic years, particularly toward non-COVID-19 vaccines, remains unclear. Understanding the social and behavioral factors influencing vaccine acceptance following a public health emergency such as the COVID-19 pandemic is critical to improving immunization coverage. This systematic review examined the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on general vaccine acceptance in LMICs to inform str

Perceiving, interpreting and responding to changes in hand function among older adults with mild cognitive impairment: a common-sense model-informed qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Older adults with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) may exhibit selective differences in hand function, including complex manual dexterity, movement speed, rhythm, and performance variability, even while basic independence remains largely preserved. However, existing research has relied predominantly on objective measures, and little is known about how older adults notice, interpret, and respond to these changes in everyday life. Guided by the Common-Sense Model of Self-Regulation (CSM), this study explored the subjective experiences and everyday meanings of changes in hand function

Pregnancy and weight gain: a scoping review of women's perceptions and experiences with stigma.

BACKGROUND: Weight stigma can impact any woman who considers herself as overweight, regardless of BMI. Pregnant women are at risk of experiencing stigma related to weight which harm their physical and mental health. To support and guide on healthy weight gain during pregnancy, it is important to explore women's perceptions and experiences of weight related stigma. This can inform programs and policies to improve maternal and child health outcomes. A scoping review on this issue will provide valuable insights, identify gaps in current research, and establish a foundation for informed interventi

Preferences for mHealth Features to Support Engagement in the HIV Preexposure Prophylaxis Cascade Among Men Who Have Sex With Men in Peru: Cross-Sectional Online Survey.

BACKGROUND: Despite policy-level progress, implementation of oral HIV preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) remains limited in Latin America. In Peru, men who have sex with men (MSM) account for most new HIV diagnoses, yet uptake remains low. Widespread smartphone ownership and the use of digital platforms present an opportunity to expand access through mobile health (mHealth) interventions. However, limited data exist on user preferences to guide the design of mHealth tools in Spanish-speaking Latin American settings. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess preferences for mHealth features to support
