Secular trends in the incidence and treatment patterns of primary hyperparathyroidism in Korea: a nationwide cohort study.

Data on epidemiology and secular trend in primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) in adults are relatively limited in Asian countries. This study aims to provide an overview of the secular trends in incidence, clinical characteristics, and treatment patterns of PHPT in South Korea. We used Korea's National Health Insurance Claim database (2005-2020) to identify newly diagnosed PHPT cases. Individuals with age below 19, fewer than 2 E21.0 diagnoses, fewer than 2 PTH measurements, secondary hyperparathyroidism, undergoing dialysis or kidney transplantation within a year of diagnosis, parathyroidectom

Prospective single-center paradigm shift of surgical stabilization of rib fractures with decreased length of stay and operative time with an intrathoracic approach.

INTRODUCTION: Intrathoracic surgical stabilization of rib fractures allows for a novel approach to rib fracture repair. This approach can help minimize muscle disruption, which may improve patient recovery compared with traditional extrathoracic plating. We hypothesized patients undergoing intrathoracic plating (ITP) to have a shorter length of stay (LOS) and intensive care unit (ICU) LOS compared with extrathoracic plating (ETP). METHODS: A prospective observational paradigm shift study was performed from November 2017 until September 2021. Patients 18 and older who underwent surgical stabil

Is Elective Soft Tissue Hand Surgery Associated with Periprosthetic Joint Infection after Total Joint Arthroplasty?

BACKGROUND: Although current guidelines do not recommend the routine use of surgical antibiotic prophylaxis to reduce the risk of surgical site infection following clean, soft tissue hand surgery, antibiotics are nevertheless often used in patients with an existing joint prosthesis to prevent periprosthetic joint infection (PJI), despite little data to support this practice. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: (1) Is clean, soft tissue hand surgery after THA or TKA associated with PJI risk? (2) Does surgical antibiotic prophylaxis before hand surgery decrease PJI risk in patients with recent THA or TKA? MET

Racial disparities in recommendations for surgical resection of primary brain tumours: a registry-based cohort analysis.

BACKGROUND: Disparities in treatment and outcomes disproportionately affect minority ethnic and racial populations in many surgical fields. Although substantial research in racial disparities has focused on outcomes, little is known about how surgeon recommendations can be influenced by patient race. The aim of this study was to investigate racial and socioeconomic disparities in the surgical management of primary brain tumors. METHODS: In this registry-based cohort study, we used data from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database (1975-2016) and the American College of
