Cognitive bias via the Internet: a comparison of Web-based and standard emotional Stroop tasks in social phobia.

There is accumulating evidence to suggest that social phobia is associated with attentional bias for words related to social threat. Information processing in individuals with social phobia (n = 87) was investigated in the present study using 2 versions of the emotional Stroop task. Results from a standard emotional Stroop task indicated delayed colour naming of socially threatening words relative to neutral words, in line with previous research, whereas results from a Web-based emotional Stroop task indicated a facilitation effect, with faster manual indication of colour choice for socially t

An internet-based intervention to improve psychosocial outcomes in heart transplant recipients and family caregivers: development and evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Although quality of life (QOL) is generally improved by heart transplantation, medical noncompliance and mental health and QOL limitations often emerge and persist. Transplant teams' ability to address these issues is hampered because many patients reside long distances from the transplant program. We therefore conducted the first empirical evaluation of an internet-based psychosocial intervention for heart recipients and their families. METHODS: Based on focus group work and previous research, a multifaceted web-based intervention was developed with stress and medical regimen man…

From Screen-Time Control to Digital Resilience: A Harm-Reduction Framework for Adolescent Internet Gaming Disorder in China.

Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD) among adolescents is a mental health issue associated with multiple levels of influence, including individual development, game design, self-regulation, and the broader offline environment. Drawing on a narrative synthesis of relevant psychological evidence, together with conceptual analysis and normative policy analysis, this paper examines the extent to which China's existing anti-addiction measures correspond to the risk structure of IGD. Existing evidence indicates that a range of individual, environmental, and game-design factors are associated with problema…

The value of promoting "Internet Plus" home-based pulmonary rehabilitation for university staff with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) is a non-pharmacological intervention for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). "Internet-Plus" technologies create opportunities for home-delivered PR to overcome barriers of center-based rehabilitation, yet real-world implementation evidence among university staff with COPD remains scarce. This mini review synthesizes six major "Internet-Plus" home-based PR modalities: short message service (SMS)/telephone follow-up, social media platforms, video conferencing telerehabilitation, wearable devices and Internet of things (IoT) systems, smartphone applicatio…

Problematic Internet Use and Mental Well-Being: The Importance Adolescents' Place on Digital Technology Interactions Moderates This Relationship.

PURPOSE: Problematic Internet use (PIU) affects around 10% of adolescents and contributes to lower well-being. However, using the Internet for social connection is associated with higher well-being. This study investigated whether the importance placed on using technology in specific ways, such as for social connection, might attenuate the association between PIU and mental well-being. METHODS: This national cross-sectional study examined whether adolescents' perceived importance of technology interactions moderated the association between PIU and mental well-being. Adolescents responded via …

Guided internet-based treatment for anxiety and depression in Norwegian primary care: a randomized non-inferiority effectiveness trial.

OBJECTIVE: Meta-analyses suggest that therapist-guided internet-based cognitive behavioural therapy (iCBT) is as effective as face-to-face CBT for anxiety and depression, yet its non-inferiority in routine primary care settings is scarcely examined. We examined the non-inferiority of the therapist-guided program "Assisted self-help" (AS-iCBT) compared to treatment as usual within the Norwegian Prompt Mental Health Care (TAU-PMHC). METHODS: A pragmatic, parallel-group, randomized controlled non-inferiority trial with 1:2 (AS-iCBT: TAU-PMHC) allocation was conducted. Participants (n = 390, 37.4…

Internet media and depression in older adults experiencing pain: Evidence from a five-year longitudinal study (2018-2023).

BACKGROUND: Pain is a significant risk factor for depression among older adults. While prior studies suggest that internet media may improve mental well-being, it remains unclear whether such media can reduce pain-related depression. OBJECTIVES: This five-year longitudinal study explores the potential moderating effect of internet media on the relationship between pain and depression among older adults. METHODS: Participants were sourced from 2018, 2020, and 2023 waves of the China Longitudinal Aging Social Survey, and this study utilized 3240 "person-year" observations from 1080 respondents…

From self to screen: a person-centered analysis of self-identity and internet addiction among Chinese college students.

BACKGROUND: The internet has become a crucial space for college students to explore and construct their self-identity. However, discrepancies between self-identity in real versus virtual environments can generate psychological dissonance and identity confusion, which in turn heighten vulnerability to maladaptive coping strategies such as internet addiction (IA). This study aims to identify the latent profiles of self-identity among Chinese college students and examine how these profiles relate to their susceptibility to IA. METHOD: A total of 1,022 Chinese college students (44.91% male; mean …
