Perineural spread of tumour has been demonstrated in 24% of an unselected series of 70 patients with squamous carcinomas of the head and neck treated by surgery. Slightly more than half the patients had primary tumours arising within the buccal cavity. Carcinoma cuniculatum is a locally aggressive, low-grade variant of squamous cell carcinoma. Though primarily a tumour of the skin, it has also been found to be arising from various mucosal surfaces including oral mucosa. When it occurs in the mandible it starts as a mucosal lesion which progressively invades the jaw and destroys the underlying bone, often presenting as a cystic lesion. PURPOSE: Mental neuropathy (MN) is characterized by the presence of a sensory defect in the form of paresthesias or dysesthesias in the territory innervated by the mental nerve. OBJECTIVE AND IMPORTANCE: Two cases of fracture of the iliac crest after graft harvesting are presented. Only six such cases have been reported in the literature, although more than 100,000 such procedures are performed each year in the United States alone. It has been suggested that radiology of the skull and jaw in familial polyposis coli may be a useful marker in up to 90 percent of cases. These x-rays were reviewed independently by a dental surgeon and a neuroradiologist in 51 patients. Only seven patients (14 percent) had significant lesion seen in the context of screening. Each of these patients also had other extracolonic manifestations of familial polyposis coli. The Cleveland Clinic Foundation experience with radiology of the jaw and skull is that it is not a useful screening tool.
