Association between paternal smoking at the time of pregnancy and the semen quality in sons.

BACKGROUND: Maternal smoking during pregnancy has repeatedly been associated with decreased sperm counts in sons. Nevertheless, our team recently detected a lower total sperm count in the sons of smoking fathers as compared to sons of non-smoking fathers. Since paternal and maternal tobacco smoking often coincide, it is difficult to discriminate whether effects are mediated paternally or maternally when using questionnaire- or register-based studies. Therefore, getting an objective measure of the maternal nicotine exposure level during pregnancy might help disentangling the impact of paternall

Mercury speciation in prenatal exposure in Slovenian and Croatian population - PHIME study.

In recent years, several studies have addressed the issue of prenatal exposure to methylmercury (MeHg); however, few have actually analysed MeHg blood concentrations. Our study population included mothers and their new-borns from Slovenia (central region; N = 584) and Croatia (coastal region; N = 234). We have measurements of total Hg (THg) and MeHg in maternal hair, maternal peripheral blood, and cord blood. Cord blood Hg concentrations were low to moderate (median THg = 1.84 ng/g and MeHg = 1.69 ng/g). The proportion of THg as MeHg (%MeHg) in maternal and cord blood varied between 4% and 100

The effects of maternal smoking on pregnancy outcome and placental histopathology lesions.

OBJECTIVE: To study the effects of maternal smoking on pregnancy outcome and placental histopathology findings. MATERIALS & METHODS: Maternal and labor characteristics and pathological reports were compared between term placentas of complicated and uncomplicated pregnancies of: heavy smokers (>10 cigarettes per day, H-smokers), moderate smokers (<10 cigarettes per day, M-smokers) and non-smokers (controls, N-smokers). RESULTS: Birth-weights were lower in the H-smokers and M-smokers as compared to the N-smokers (p<0.001), with a higher rate of small for gestational age (SGA): 18.2%, 19.2% and

Effects of low concentrations of organochlorine compounds in women on calcium transfer in human placental syncytiotrophoblast.

For most Canadians, food represents one of the major sources of environmental contaminants. Among them, organochlorine compounds (OCs) are known to affect calcium (Ca2+) homeostasis. They are neurotoxic by perturbation of Ca2+ channels and pumps, and they interfere with protein kinase C (PKC) and Ca2+ binding protein (CaBP). Ca2+ is an essential element to adequate fetal growth and development. The aim of the present study is to determine the relation between low environmental maternal exposure to OCs, such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB 153), Aroclor 1260, p,p'-dichlorodiphenyltrichloroeth…

Peripartum depression and caregivers' practices of digital media exposure in infants and young children: A systematic review and meta-analysis study.

BACKGROUND: Responsive caregiver-child interaction is central to early child development. Peripartum depression (PPD) may affect caregiving capacity and increase contextual risk for potential child neglect. One way this may be expressed is through excessive screen time. However, the association between maternal PPD and child screen exposure has not been systematically synthesized. OBJECTIVE: To systematically review and meta-analyze evidence on the association between maternal PPD and digital media screen exposure in infancy and early childhood. METHODS: This review was registered in PROSPER

The relation between human exposure to mercury and thyroid hormone status.

The aim of this study was to investigate total mercury (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) exposure of 75 mother-child pairs in relation to their thyroid hormone status (thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), triiodothyronine (T3), free triiodothyronine (fT3), thyroxine (T4), and free thyroxine (fT4)). THg and MeHg in blood samples were measured by atomic absorption spectrometry and gas chromatography-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry, respectively. The median THg and MeHg levels in maternal blood, cord blood, and blood of 6-month-old children were 0.50, 0.53, and 0.32 and 0.22, 0.32, and 0.

A breast milk-borne clue to early-life immune education.

Preclinical findings and preliminary human data show that exposure to trans-vaccenic acid (TVA) through maternal milk promotes Th1 immune responses and enhances offspring resistance to infection, even after TVA exposure ceases, revealing how subtle changes in maternal diet may durably shape immune trajectories.

Ionizing radiations in pregnancy and teratogenesis: a review of literature.

The present paper is a review of the data available in the literature concerning the prenatal exposure to radiation evaluating the reported teratogenic effect. We have particularly focused on the fetal effects of maternal ionising radiation exposure, both diagnostic and occupational, particularly in terms of congenital anomalies and birth weight. Ionising radiation represents a possible teratogen for the fetus, but this risk has been found to be dependent on the dosage and the effects correlatable to the gestational age at exposure. Recently, of particularly note is the fact that maternal thyr

Maternal verbal aggression in early infancy and child's internalizing symptoms: interaction by common oxytocin polymorphisms.

Genetic predisposition of social sensitivity might affect vulnerability to develop psychopathology after early life stress exposure. This study examined whether maternal verbally aggressive behavior in early infancy interacts with oxytocin polymorphisms in developing internalizing symptoms at ages 5-6 and 11-12. In the Amsterdam-Born-Children-and-their-Development (ABCD) study, a large observational, population-based birth cohort, maternal verbally aggressive behavior was assessed in the 13th postnatal week by a self-report questionnaire. Internalizing symptoms at age 5-6 were assessed by mate

Paternal smoking during pregnancy and the risk of childhood brain tumors: results of a meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Prior epidemiological studies suggest a possible association between paternal smoking during pregnancy and risk of childhood brain tumors (CBT). A meta-analysis was performed statistically pooling all available observational studies on this topic in order to evaluate this suspected association. METHODS: Using previously described methods, a protocol was developed for a meta-analysis examining the association between paternal smoking during pregnancy and subsequent development of primary brain tumors in their offspring. Literature search techniques study inclusion criteria and stati

Do prenatal affective symptoms have an impact on the infant oral microbial exposure? Results from the Kuopio Birth Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Up to one-fifth of pregnant women are affected by depression, which has been associated with disruptions in the maternal microbiome during pregnancy. Stress-related disruptions in the maternal vaginal microbiome can be carried over to the offspring, and lead to adverse developmental outcomes. OBJECTIVE: We investigated whether maternal depressive and anxiety symptoms during pregnancy associated with compositional alterations of the oral microbial exposure of infants during vaginal birth. METHODS: We conducted a secondary analysis of 324 mother-newborn pairs participating in the K

Exacerbated lung inflammation following secondary RSV exposure is CD4+ T cell-dependent and is not mitigated in infant BALB/c mice born to PreF-vaccinated dams.

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is the leading cause of childhood hospitalizations due to bronchiolitis in children under 5 years of age. Moreover, severe RSV disease requiring hospitalization is associated with the subsequent development of wheezing and asthma. Due to the young age in which viral protection is needed and risk of vaccine enhanced disease following direct infant vaccination, current approaches aim to protect young children through maternal immunization strategies that boost neutralizing maternal antibody (matAb) levels. However, there is a scarcity of studies investigating th

The association of in utero tobacco smoke exposure, quantified by serum cotinine, and Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Previous studies on in utero exposure to maternal environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) or maternal active smoking and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) have not been entirely consistent, and no studies have examined in utero cotinine concentrations as an exposure classification method. We measured cotinine in stored second trimester maternal serum for 498 ASD cases and 499 controls born in California in 2011-2012. We also obtained self-reported maternal cigarette smoking during and immediately prior to pregnancy, as well as covariate data, from birth records. Using unconditional logistic regression,

Maternal dietary n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acid deprivation does not exacerbate post-weaning reductions in arachidonic acid and its mediators in the mouse hippocampus.

OBJECTIVES: The present study examines how lowering maternal dietary n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) (starting from pregnancy) compared to offspring (starting from post-weaning) affect the levels of n-6 and n-3 fatty acids in phospholipids (PL) and lipid mediators in the hippocampus of mice. METHODS: Pregnant mice were randomly assigned to consume either a deprived or an adequate n-6 PUFA diet during pregnancy and lactation (maternal exposure). On postnatal day (PND) 21, half of the male pups were weaned onto the same diet as their dams, and the other half were switched to the other di…

Longitudinal maternal depression and child mental health from pregnancy to child age 7: a study of three life course frameworks.

PURPOSE: Maternal depression is associated with mental health difficulties in children, but it is unclear how the timing or duration of depressive symptoms impact child outcomes. This study tested three life course frameworks in the longitudinal association between maternal depression and child mental health: sensitive periods, accumulation, and chain of risk. METHODS: 841 mother-child dyads in Pakistan were followed from pregnancy through child age 7. Maternal depressive symptoms were assessed during the third trimester of pregnancy, infancy (3 and 6 months postpartum), early childhood (chil

Association between the external urban exposome and systemic inflammation in pregnant women.

Systemic inflammation during pregnancy is associated with adverse health outcomes for both mother and child. C-reactive protein (CRP) is a widely used biomarker of inflammation, and its levels may be influenced by environmental factors. This study examined the association between 26 components of the external urban exposome-including air pollutants, land use, and access to green and blue spaces-and CRP concentrations in 1547 pregnant women from the INMA birth cohort in Spain (Gipuzkoa, Sabadell, and Valencia). Environmental exposures during the first trimester were assessed using GIS-based ind

Intrauterine exposure to glyphosate-based herbicide during pregnancy induces testicular impairment via activating ferroptosis in offspring.

Glyphosate-based herbicide (GBH) is a broad-spectrum herbicide extensively used in agriculture, which poses increased residual risks in grains and food products, thereby endangering human health. However, the impact of maternal GBH exposure on fetal testicular development, as well as the protective effects of dietary betaine supplementation, remains inadequately understood. Hereby, pregnant sow models were established to elucidate the effects of GBH exposure at concentrations of 20 and 100 mg/kg and to investigate the protective mechanisms of betaine. The results showed that GBH and betaine ha

Effect of Per and Poly-Fluoroalkyl Substances on Pregnancy and Child Development.

BACKGROUND: Childhood obesity is significantly influenced by maternal exposure to Per and Poly-Fluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) during pregnancy. PFAS exposure occurs through the Peroxisome Proliferator-Activated Receptor (PPAR-γ) receptor, leading to increased fat deposition and profound health effects in child growth and development. Despite ongoing investigations, the relationship between maternal serum PFAS concentration and child obesity requires further exploration. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to review the possible effects of Per and poly-fluoroalkyl substances exposure and their mechanis…

Endocrine disruptors and pregnancy.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Sensitivity to endocrine disruptors is higher in early life. Endocrine disruptor chemicals can be passed from pregnant women to their babies through the placenta or breast milk during lactation, leading to long-term and potentially permanent adverse effects. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This review evaluates the effects of endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) on pregnancy by summarizing findings from experimental and observational studies. Exposure routes, reproductive outcomes, fetal development implications, and potential preventive strategies are analyzed. RESULTS: Exposure to
