CONTEXT: Thyroid hormones have a dramatic effect on human behavior. However, their role on sexual behavior and performance has seldom been investigated in men.
OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of sexual dysfunctions in patients with hyper- and hypothyroidism and their resolution after normalization of thyroid hormone levels.
DESIGN AND SETTING: We conducted a multicenter prospective study at endocrinology and andrology clinics in university hospitals.
PATIENTS: The study included 48 adult men, 34 with hyperthyroidism and 14 with hypothyroidism.

Radioiodine therapy is now the most common definite treatment for persistent hyperthyroidism. The outcome of radioiodine therapy depends mainly on the absorbed energy dose in the diseased thyroid tissue. The administered activity and the resulting target dose in the thyroid depend on both the biokinetics of radioiodine and the actual therapeutic effect of radioiodine in the thyroid. Thyrostatic drugs have a major influence on the kinetics of radioiodine in the thyroid and may additionally have a radioprotective effect. Pre-treatment with thyrostatic medication lowers the effective half-life an

The involvement of angiotensin AT1 receptors in sodium appetite was studied in hypothyroid rats treated with the angiotensin II antagonist losartan. Losartan was administered chronically by the oral route or acutely by the subcutaneous route after water and sodium depletion or water, sodium and food deprivation. Three days after addition of losartan to the food at the dose of 1.0 mg x g(-1), the rats significantly reduced (P < 0.02) their spontaneous intake of 1.8% NaCl. Increasing the dose of losartan to 2.0 and 4.0 mg x g(-1) did not reduce NaCl intake; in contrast, the intensity of the sodi

Cardiac structure and function are affected both by acromegaly and hyperthyroidism. Whereas the former is mainly characterized by ventricular hypertrophy as well as diastolic and systolic impairment, the latter frequently leads to increased heart rate and enhancement of contractility and cardiac output. To further investigate this issue, we designed this two-arm study. In the first cross-sectional study, we compared echocardiography and radionuclide angiography results obtained in eight hyperthyroid acromegalic patients, eight hyperthyroid nonacromegalic patients, and eight healthy subjects. Several studies have shown the relevance of the neuroendocrinological system in the development and function of the nervous system. In order to observe the influence of thyroid hormones during development on the behaviour of adult rats we induced dysthyroid states during the perinatal period. Results indicate that some behaviours are more susceptible to the action of thyroid hormones than others. We observed that the thyroid hormone deficiency causes an increase of activity in animals in spite of a large period of rehabilitation. Thyroxine-treated rats showed an anxiogenic behavioural pattern

BACKGROUND: Diabetes and hypothyroidism produce adverse effects on body weight and sexual maturity by inhibiting body growth and metabolism. The occurrence of diabetes is always accompanied with thyroid dysfunction. Thus, it is important to take hypo- or hyper-thyroidism into consideration when exploring the adverse effects caused by diabetes. Previous reports have found hypothyroidism inhibits testicular growth by delaying Sertoli cell differentiation and proliferation. Hence, by establishing a mouse model of diabetes combined with hypothyroidism, we provided evidence that poly glandular auto

A 51-year-old woman with a personal history of vitiligo, normal thyroid hormone studies, a simple hysterectomy for multiple uterine myomas at age 35 years, and childhood adenotonsillectomy was seen for progressive hearing loss. She reported mild asthenia, cold intolerance, mild dysphagia with frequent choking while eating and drinking, and a progressive increase in inspiratory effort, especially in the supine position. Her partner described a progressively worsening history of snoring and witnessed apneic episodes, mostly in the supine position. Mild to moderate daytime sleepiness was also pre

CONTEXT: Little information is available about changes in body weight and body mass index in children before, during, and after treatment for Graves' disease (GD).
OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to examine changes in body weight after treatment for GD in children as related to clinical features.
DESIGN: The medical records of 43 pediatric patients with GD [35 girls and eight boys, aged 4.0-18.5 (mean 10.9) yr] were examined. Patients were included if clinical data were available for 1 yr before and after the diagnosis of GD.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Weight, height, body mass index (BMI) z-score

We report a case of a 39 year-old Asian man in whom profound lower limb paralysis, along with severe hypokalemia and electrocardiographic changes, were the presenting features of Graves' disease (GD)-related thyrotoxicosis. Rapid recognition and management of the disorder were the key factors to avoid fatal hypokalemia-induced cardiac arrhythmias and promptly restore patient's capacity to ambulate.

OBJECTIVE: Abnormal bone metabolism in patients with Graves' thyrotoxicosis is well documented, but the precise time-course of its recovery remains poorly understood. The present study was undertaken to clarify longitudinal improvement in bony manifestations, especially in cortical bone, and bone metabolic markers in thyrotoxicosis.
DESIGN: Two year prospective follow-up study in patients with Graves' disease.
PATIENTS: Ten consecutive patients with Graves' disease (seven males and three females, of mean (+/-SEM) age 39.3 +/- 3.9 years) were enrolled in the study and treated with antithyroid

INTRODUCTION: The thyroid peroxidase inhibiting compounds methimazole, methylthiouracil, propylthiouracil, thiouracil (i.e. 'antithyroid' drugs) and ethylenethiourea have been associated to thyroid tumours in rodents. According to a systematic review by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) published in 2000, evidence for the human carcinogenicity was inadequate.
METHODS: We performed an up-to-date systematic review of human epidemiological studies on the association between such compounds and thyroid cancer incidence or mortality.
RESULTS: The literature research (1999-Marc…

Thyroid hormones are essential for the development and differentiation of all cells of the human body. They regulate protein, fat, and carbo … of T4 to T3. Antithyroid drugs are thiourea-based compounds, which include propylthiouracil (PTU), methimazole (MMI), and carbimazole (CBZ). The thyroid gland actively concentrates these heterocyclic compounds against a concentration gradient. Recently, the selenium analogues of PTU, MMI, and CBZ attracted significant attention because the selenium moiety in …

Out of six, five babies had no consanguineous background, while one was born to parents with second-degree consanguinity. Most common site involved was the parietal region of the scalp (80%). We previously reported the presence of thyroid hormone autoantibodies (THAA) in the sera from three (2 Hashimoto's thyroiditis, 1 Hashimoto's thyroiditis suspected) out of four sisters in a family and one patient with Graves' disease during treatment with methimazole (MMI). According to the investigations of the binding of labelled thyroid hormones, endogenous and/or therapeutic thyroid hormones interfered with their binding with THAA. This interference, however, was excluded when the sera were acidified with a 0.05M glycine-HCl buffer (pH 2.1) and all the liberated thyroid hormones were absor…
