Motion sickness susceptibility and related behavioral characteristics in men and women.

The incidence of motion sickness in a large (N = 3,618) college population was determined by means of a questionnaire. The test-retest reliability coefficient (0.84) suggested that the motion sickness questionnaire (MSQ) for this particular population yields highly consistent information. Significantly greater proportions of men than women had low susceptibility scores and, conversely, significantly greater proportions of women had high susceptibility scores. The relationships between motion sickness susceptibility scores and several behavioral characteristics in men and women were also invest…

Prevention of experimental motion sickness by scopolamine absorbed through the skin.

A double-blind placebo-controlled study compared the efficacy of the antimotion sickness drug scopolamine when administered by oral or transdermal routes. A secondary purpose was to extend our bioassay involving fixed-dose combinations of the homergic drugs promethazine and ephedrine. After receiving 12 apparently identical drug-placebo treatments, eight normal male students were exposed to a slow rotation room to stressful accelerations generated by their execution of 40 head movements out of the plane of the room's rotation of 1 rpm and at 1-rpm increments until either symptoms were experien…

Interocular transfer of the motion after-effect in normal and stereoblind observers.

The extent of interocular transfer of the motion after-effect was measured in 4 stereoblind subjects and in 19 subjects having varying degrees of stereopsis. Stereoblind individuals failed completely to show any interocular transfer of this after-effect, while subjects with good stereopsis exhibited between 55 and 82 percent transfer (mean 73 percent). Furthermore, normal subjects who manifested a clear eye dominance tended to show greater transfer from the dominant to the nondominant eye than vice versa. Individuals who either had a history of a strabismus or possessed some other early impedi…

Malady in motion: Effects of chronic wasting disease on host movement.

Pathogens can have significant impacts on host movement and behavior with consequences for ongoing transmission. For example, chronic wasting disease (CWD) causes severe nutritional deficiencies and neurologic changes, which may alter white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) movement and subsequent transmission risk. Our objectives were to test for changes in movement and habitat selection in deer affected by CWD, and determine the timing of any changes we observed. We leveraged comprehensive movement and mortality data from a large study of free-ranging deer in southwest Wisconsin, a region

The FlEye camera: Sampling the joint distribution of natural scenes and motion.

Processing of sensory signals by the brain is subject to physical limitations, both external (statistical quality of sensory input) and internal (physiological limitations on neural signals). Efficient use of limited resources requires that the brain match its processing strategies to the statistical structure of input signals. We test this idea in the context of motion estimation in the fly visual system, where the optics of the compound eye and signals and noise in the retina are well understood and we can record from output neurons that encode velocity estimates. Still missing is a full cha…

Transcatheter aortic valve replacement in young patients: a paradigm in motion.

Transcatheter aortic valve replacement has rapidly expanded from high-risk populations to younger patients with aortic stenosis. This shift raises important questions about valve durability, reintervention strategies, and long-term outcomes compared with surgical aortic valve replacement. Younger patients often present with unique anatomical challenges, including bicuspid aortic valves, and are expected to outlive their first valve prosthesis, making lifetime management a central concern. While new valve technologies show promise, long-term data remain limited. Careful patient selection, share

Resilience in motion: emerging perspectives on stress, substance use and youth.

Adolescence and young adulthood are developmental stages characterized by heightened stress sensitivity and limited cognitive control. The identification of the risk factors of alcohol consumption in these stages is crucial for early interventions focused on reducing harmful alcohol use. This review examines how exercise can modulate stress responses, reduce cravings, and preserve cognitive and emotional functioning. In animal models, it has been well described that exercise is able to reduce craving and protect cognitive and affective domains. Translational studies in young people with risky …

X-ray liquidography decodes complex motions in azobenzene isomerization.

Capturing ultrafast structural rearrangements of organic molecules in solution remains a central challenge, with isomerization being a key e … unveiled structures reveal that the trans-to-cis conversion proceeds through a sequence of distinct motions, initiated by C-N torsion, a motion that has received little attention in previous studies, and subsequently dominated by N-N rotation. This work provides structural insights into the volume-conserving nature of azobenzene isomerization and establi …

Confinement-induced collective motion in suspensions of run-and-tumble particles.

Collective motion is ubiquitous in active systems at all length and time scales. The mechanisms behind such collective motion are usually alignment interactions between active particles, effective alignment after collisions between agents, or symmetry-breaking fluctuations induced by passive species in active suspensions. In this article, we introduce a new type of collective motion in the shape of a traveling band induced purely by confinement, where no explicit or effective alignment is prescribed among the active agents. We study a suspension of run-and-tumble particles confined in microcha…

Functional Clusters for Shape, Texture, and Motion Encoding in Macaque V2.

Macaque primary visual cortex (V1) exhibits exquisite columnar organization, while midlevel area V4 does not. Here we investigated the functional organization and representational bases of intervening area V2 in three macaques (one male, two females) with high-density Neuropixels recordings and a variety of visual stimuli-shape, texture, drifting grating, and translational motion patches. We observed dense clusters of similarly tuned neurons often spanning ∼500 µm, consistent with a columnar structure. In terms of representational bases, V2 responses were largely explained by stimulus features…

Experimental and numerical investigation on micro-motion characteristics of lightweight spacecraft.

Accurate prediction of micro-motion characteristics is essential to the success of space mission operations. In this paper, the lightweight spacecraft is selected as the research object. Firstly, the micro-motion characteristic test device is designed to carry out the micro-motion experiment, and the micro-motion characteristic of the test device is numerically simulated to verify the accuracy of the model compared with test data. On this basis, the angular velocity interferences of different values and different directions are simulated, and it is verified that the transversal initial interfe…

Going through the motions; Chromatin organization and dynamics across scales.

Genome organization determines cell fate and is fundamental for the development of complex organisms. In the nucleus, chromatin forms distinct structures at varying scales with dynamics that allow for genome compaction and accessibility to co-occur. Here, we review the current understanding of such structures and their dynamics, and the corresponding functional consequences. Key advances include elucidating the effects of chromatin structure on chromatin dynamics and vice-versa, defining trans-acting chromatin factors that modulate mesoscale chromatin organization and dynamics, and exploring t
