Longitudinal Cohort Event Monitoring of MMR and DT-IPV Vaccination at 9 Years of Age in The Netherlands.

Background/Objectives: The Dutch National Immunisation Programme (NIP) aims to protect children against severe infectious diseases. As with all vaccines, adverse events following immunisation (AEFIs) may occur with the use of vaccines in the NIP. Safety of the vaccines is monitored by The Netherlands Pharmacovigilance Centre Lareb. This study aimed to systematically document AEFIs following administration of the MMR and DT-IPV vaccines, which are given simultaneously at the age of 9 years. Methods: A cohort event monitoring (CEM) study was performed, employing a longitudinal cohort design. Par…

HIV testing among sub-Saharan African migrants in the Netherlands: a comprehensive analysis of barriers and facilitators.

In the Netherlands, sub-Saharan African migrants (SSAM) are disproportionately affected by HIV, and late HIV diagnoses remain a significant challenge. Using a socioecological framework, we explored barriers and facilitators to HIV testing from the perspectives of a diverse group of 32 SSAM and 13 key informants (KI) through semi-structured interviews. Interview data were analyzed using inductive thematic analysis. Identified barriers to HIV testing included risk perception, limited availability of HIV-related information and awareness of testing possibilities and opportunities, loss of social …

Harnessing registry data to identify socio-demographic and socio-economic gaps in HIV care in the Netherlands.

To ensure progress towards zero new HIV infections, more detailed information is needed about why certain individuals might not successfully transition through the steps of the HIV care continuum. We used data from 21,788 individuals with HIV who were enrolled in the ATHENA cohort before 31 December 2023, and combined these with registry data from Statistics Netherlands. This allowed modeling socio-demographic, -economic, and health-related determinants of not achieving two milestones of the HIV care continuum, i.e., suppressed viral load and engagement in care. Across all subgroups of men who…

The bio-artificial pancreas to treat type 1 diabetes: Perspectives from healthcare professionals in the Netherlands.

AIMS: Healthcare professionals are relevant stakeholders because of their gatekeeper role in the clinic. This study aims to explore their perspectives on the potential future clinical implementation of the bio-artificial pancreas (BAP) for people with type 1 diabetes, and suitable target groups. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 17 healthcare professionals, including endocrinologists, nurses, and pancreas transplant surgeons. Inclusion was stopped once data saturation was reached. The audiotaped interviews were transcribed verbatim. Qualitative content analysis using an

Air pollution exposure and mortality from neurodegenerative diseases in the Netherlands: A population-based cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Long-term exposure to ambient air pollution has been linked with all-cause mortality and cardiovascular and respiratory diseases. Suggestive associations between ambient air pollutants and neurodegeneration have also been reported, but due to the small effect and relatively rare outcomes evidence is yet inconclusive. Our aim was to investigate the associations between long-term air pollution exposure and mortality from neurodegenerative diseases. METHODS: A Dutch national cohort of 10.8 million adults aged ≥30 years was followed from 2013 until 2019. Annual average concentrations

Diabetes and the risk of bladder cancer subtypes in men and women: results from the Netherlands Cohort Study.

Meta-analyses have shown modest positive associations between diabetes mellitus (DM) and bladder cancer risk, but results are heterogeneous. This might be due to lack of distinction between bladder cancer subtypes, between sexes, and possibly between Type 2 and Type 1 DM (T2DM and T1DM). The relationship of T2DM (and secondarily T1DM) characteristics with risk of bladder cancer subtypes (invasive versus noninvasive) was investigated in the Netherlands Cohort Study. In 1986, 120,852 men and women aged 55-69 years provided information on DM and lifestyle data. After 20.3 years of follow-up, mult…

Implementation of aspirin use during pregnancy in community midwifery-led care in the Netherlands: A pilot survey.

INTRODUCTION: Aspirin nowadays is widely used in pregnancy, but implementation among gynecologists took nearly four decades. For a complete insight in the implementation of aspirin, community midwives are to be involved. Community midwives do not have authority to prescribe aspirin and have to refer to a general practitioner or consultant obstetrician for a prescription. METHODS: The study was an online, national pilot survey about the implementation of aspirin use during pregnancy among independently practicing community midwives consisting of 29 items with five categories: background, advis

Circulation, viral diversity and genomic rearrangement in mpox virus in the Netherlands during the 2022 outbreak and beyond.

Mpox is an emerging zoonotic disease which has now spread to over 113 countries as of August 2023, with over 89,500 confirmed human cases. The Netherlands had one of the highest incidence rates in Europe during the peak of the outbreak. In this study, we generated 158 near-complete mpox virus (MPXV) genomes (12.4% of nationwide cases) that were collected throughout the Netherlands from the start of the outbreak in May 2022 to August 2023 to track viral evolution and investigate outbreak dynamics. We detected 14 different viral lineages, suggesting multiple introductions followed by rapid initi…

Use of a diagnostic Puumala virus real-time RT-PCR in an orthohantavirus endemic region in the Netherlands.

UNLABELLED: Laboratory diagnosis of orthohantavirus infection is primarily based on serology. However, for a confirmed serological diagnosis, evaluation of a follow-up serum sample is essential, which is time consuming and causes delay. Real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) tests, if positive, provide an immediate and definitive diagnosis, and accurately identify the causative agent, where the discriminative nature of serology is suboptimal. We re-evaluated sera from orthohantavirus-suspected clinical cases in the Dutch regions of Twente and Achterhoek from July 20

Exposure, infection and disease with the tick-borne pathogen Borrelia miyamotoi in the Netherlands and Sweden, 2007-2019.

The impact of the emerging tick-borne pathogen Borrelia miyamotoi is not fully understood. We utilised a protein array to investigate B. miyamotoi seroreactivity in various human populations in the Netherlands and Sweden. The IgM/IgG seroprevalence in Dutch healthy (2·5%, 95%CI 1·5-4·1) and population controls (2·0%, 95%CI 0·9-4·4) was lower (p = 0·01 and p = 0·01) compared to the tick-bite cohort (6·1%, 95%CI 3·9-9·5). In accordance, the Swedish healthy controls (1·0%, 95%CI 0·1-6·9) revealed a lower (p = 0·005 and p < 0·001) IgM/IgG seroprevalence compared to the tick-bite (8·9%, 95%CI 5·7-1…

Diagnostic Gene Panel Testing in (Non)-Syndromic Patients with Cleft Lip, Alveolus and/or Palate in the Netherlands.

OBJECTIVES: Clefts of the lip, alveolus and/or palate (CLA/P) are the most common craniofacial congenital malformations in humans. These oral clefts can be divided into non-syndromic (isolated) and syndromic forms. Many cleft-related syndromes are clinically variable and genetically heterogeneous, making it challenging to distinguish syndromic from non-syndromic cases. Recognition of syndromic/genetic causes is important for personalized tailored care, identification of (unrecognized) comorbidities, and accurate genetic counseling. Therefore, next generation sequencing (NGS)-based targeted gen

Incidence of idiopathic nephrotic syndrome during the Covid-19 pandemic in the Paris area (France) and in the Netherlands.

BACKGROUND: The aetiology of idiopathic nephrotic syndrome (INS) remains partially unknown. Viral infections have been associated with INS onset. Since we observed fewer first onset INS cases during the Covid-19 pandemic, we hypothesised that lower INS incidence was the result of lockdown measures. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the incidence of childhood INS before and during the COVID-19 pandemic in two independent European INS cohorts. METHODS: Children with new INS in the Netherlands (2018-2021) and Paris area (2018-2021) were included. We estimated incidences using cens…
