Unusual motor conduction velocity values in Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease associated with essential tremor: report of a kinship.

In the cases of Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease associated with essential tremor so far reported, motor conduction velocity studies strongly suggested that demyelination was a prominent feature of the neuropathy. For the first time two sibs are reported in whom the electrophysiological changes favour axonal degeneration as the main trait of their peripheral neuropathy.

A hybrid compartmental model for the alligator Purkinje cell. I: Preferred somatopetal conduction of dendritic spikes and soma-axon interaction.

A compartmental hardware model of an alligator Purkinje cell is described, consisting of a branched dendritic tree with four zones of spike generation and electrically excitable soma and initial-segment regions. Passive properties of the model compartments are represented by a cable analog circuit. Simulated action potentials, generated by a combination of depolarizing and hyperpolarizing conductance changes, are triggered in active compartments when the simulated membrane potential passes through preset thresholds. These were set at values corresponding to 28mV depolarization in the dendrites

Technical and anatomical challenges to approach robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy in patients with Urolift®.

INTRODUCTION: Urolift® is a surgical modality to treat lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) in patients with enlarged prostates (1). However, the inflammatory process caused by the device usually displaces the prostate's anatomical landmarks and challenges surgeons performing robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP). In this video, we will illustrate several technical challenges in patients with Urolift ® who underwent RARP. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We performed a video compilation with several surgical steps illustrating key aspects and critical details of the anterior bladder neck access,

Wired for Success: Probing the Effect of Tissue-Engineered Neural Interface Substrates on Cell Viability.

This study investigates the electrochemical behavior of GelMA-based hydrogels and their interactions with PC12 neural cells under electrical stimulation in the presence of conducting substrates. Focusing on indium tin oxide (ITO), platinum, and gold mylar substrates supporting conductive scaffolds composed of hydrogel, graphene oxide, and gold nanorods, we explored how the substrate materials affect scaffold conductivity and cell viability. We examined the impact of an optimized electrical stimulation protocol on the PC12 cell viability. According to our findings, substrate selection significa

Skin Conductance as a Viable Alternative for Closing the Deep Brain Stimulation Loop in Neuropsychiatric Disorders.

Markers from local field potentials, neurochemicals, skin conductance, and hormone concentrations have been proposed as a means of closing the loop in Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) therapy for treating neuropsychiatric and movement disorders. Developing a closed-loop DBS controller based on peripheral signals would require: (i) the recovery of a biomarker from the source neural stimuli underlying the peripheral signal variations; (ii) the estimation of an unobserved brain or central nervous system related state variable from the biomarker. The state variable is application-specific. It is emoti

Diabetes Mellitus Type Has Impact on Cutaneous Silent Period.

INTRODUCTION: Neurophysiological tests allow accurate assessment of the function of the peripheral nervous system. Detection of neurophysiological changes allows us to understand the neurological clinical symptoms and signs of patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes and the possibility for their symptomatic treatment. AIM: Evaluate the effect of diabetes mellitus on the "cutaneous silent period" in detecting diabetic polyneuropathy. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study included 150 subjects, 90 suffering from diabetes, divided into three groups of 30, depending on the disease duration, and a con

Myeloneuropathy due to copper deficiency: clinical and MRI findings after copper supplementation.

Acquired copper deficiency constitutes an under-recognised cause of myelopathy. Aim of the study was to describe the clinical and imaging features at admission and after copper supplementation of a patient with acquired copper deficiency myeloneuropathy. A 73-year-old woman presented with anaemia and signs of posterior column dysfunction. Somatosensory evoked potentials showed impaired central pathway conduction. Serum copper and caeruloplasmin levels were low. Nerve conduction assessment revealed axonal polyneuropathy. Spinal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed posterior column hyperinten

Sex differences in antisocial and aggressive disorders that onset in childhood and persist into adulthood.

As many as 10.7% of males and 7.5% of females display early-onset, stable, antisocial and aggressive behavior (ESAAB). Most research has focused on males. These individuals are diagnosed with conduct disorder in childhood and antisocial personality disorder in adulthood, and a very few, almost all males, present the syndrome of psychopathy. ESAAB includes three subgroups: (1) conduct problems and callousness; (2) conduct problems, callousness, and anxiety; and (3) conduct problems. Heritability of the first two subtypes is high. This high heritability derives, at least in part, from genes invo

Subcellular proteomics and iPSC modeling uncover reversible mechanisms of axonal pathology in Alzheimer's disease.

Dystrophic neurites (also termed axonal spheroids) are found around amyloid deposits in Alzheimer's disease (AD), where they impair axonal electrical conduction, disrupt neural circuits and correlate with AD severity. Despite their importance, the mechanisms underlying spheroid formation remain incompletely understood. To address this, we developed a proximity labeling approach to uncover the proteome of spheroids in human postmortem and mouse brains. Additionally, we established a human induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC)-derived AD model enabling mechanistic investigation and optical electr

Tinnitus and Mild Hearing Loss From a Kiss.

Hearing loss is a common problem that everyone faces at some point in their life. There are three main types of hearing loss: conductive, sensorineural, and mixed. Conductive hearing loss occurs when an external sound is not able to gain access to the inner ear because of some type of obstruction, e.g., cerumen in the auditory canal and fluid in the middle ear. Sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) is due to damage to the inner ear, which affects the nerve conduction pathway from the inner ear to the brain. Mixed hearing loss is a combination of both conductive and sensorineural hearing loss. Sens

Axonal and neuronal degeneration in myelin diseases.

Myelin is a multilamellar cell membrane around axons and is essential for fast saltatory conduction and maintenance of axonal integrity and survival. Congenital and acquired abnormalities of myelin lead to neurological disorders involving degeneration and loss of axons and neurons, which are implicated in permanent neurological deficits and progressive neurological decline. As in other neurological disorders, neural degeneration and loss in myelin diseases are associated with multiple factors including aberrant inflammatory responses, oxidative stresses, and impaired axonal metabolism involvin

A prognostic model for the patient-reported outcome of surgical treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: Many prognostic factors have been studied in carpal tunnel decompression, but most studies consider only a subset of variables. METHODS: Three thousand three hundred thirty-two operations were used to develop prognostic models, and 885 operations were used for validation. Outcome recorded on a Likert scale was dichotomized into success or failure. Modeling was performed with both logistic regression and artificial neural networks using 87 candidate variables. RESULTS: Both approaches produced predictive multivariate models for outcome with areas under a receiver operating chara
