Electrical microstimulation of the jaw region of the rat striatum (SJR) has been reported to provoke clear electromyographic activity in the anterior digastric muscle but not in the masseter muscle (Neurosci. Lett., 252 (1998) 79-82). Thus, in the present study, we examined the sites of origin of cortico-SJR fibers by the retrograde labeling. The SJR, identified by electrical microstimulation, was injected electrophoretically with cholera toxin B subunit. In the cerebral cortex ipsilateral to the injection, there existed two foci of retrograde labeling: One focus was centered on the lateral pa

This review will focus on the mechanisms of emesis initiated or inhibited from receptors located in the periphery or activated by a peripher … e vomiting through 5-HT3 receptors in the digestive tract. Regardless of the stimulus, the afferent neural pathways mediating emesis from the abdomen may be the same. The noxious stimulus may cause release of serotonin from enterochromaffin cells of the digestive tract, which activates visceral afferents. The vagus nerves mediate responses from the stomach and pr …

The claustrocortical connections in the rabbit were assessed for the first time by the method of axonal retrograde transport of two fluorescent tracers (Fast Blue and Diamidino Yellow). The material consisted of 23 adult New Zealand rabbits. Projection zones of spindle-like form, connected with the precentral, postcentral, temporal and occipital cortices have been delineated. They are organized topographically both in the anteroposterior and ventrodorsal direction. The precentral (motor) projection zone is localized in the anterodorsal part of the claustrum. It may be divided into two separate

Dizziness of cortical origin is the subjective correlate of a disturbance of spatial orientation resulting from cerebrocortical dysfunction. Cortical dizziness in the form of vertigo is rare. If present, it most probably reflects a dysfunction of a vestibular representation in the insula. It may be accompanied by tinnitus, sensory disturbance and possibly also spontaneous nystagmus. The dysfunction of this region may result either from a focal seizure or from a lesion, for instance due to ischemia. Nondirectional, visual dizziness is most probably much more common than vertigo. This latter typ

To elucidate the patterns of visceral innervation of the vagus nerve in rats, we labelled the severed efferent path at the level of the neck in vivo by applying a solution of 0.1% carbocyanine dye DiI/100% ethanol. Two weeks after dye application, horizontal sections of the brain stem were analysed quantitatively under an epifluorescence microscope. Particles of DiI were present in neuronal cell bodies and the cellular processes in the dorsal motor nucleus (DmoX) of the vagal nerve and nucleus ambiguus (Nam). Approximately 80% of DiI-labelled cells were located in the DmoX whereas 16% were in

The aim of the present work was to study, in rats, the effects of lesions of the thalamic intergeniculate leaflet (IGL) and the deep pineal/lamina intercalaris region (DP) on the diurnal profile of N-acetylserotonin (NAS) and on the nocturnal pineal reactivity to acute retinal light stimulation (1 or 15 min). The 24-h experiment shows that there is no phase-shifting on the diurnal NAS curve of groups of rats with bilateral IGL lesion compared to the controls. On the other hand there is a significant reduction on the amplitude of pineal NAS content observed in every nocturnal point of the curve

The chemical codings of neurons that project from the small intestine, caecum, proximal colon, distal colon and rectum to the coeliac ganglion of the guinea pig were investigated. The coeliac ganglion was injected with the retrogradely transported dye Fast Blue, and each of the regions was examined 6 days later in wholemounts that had been prepared for immunohistochemical localisation of pairs of antigens. In both the small and large intestines, all intestinofugal neurons were immunoreactive (IR) for choline acetyltransferase (ChAT). In each region of the large intestine, the largest populatio

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) technique has been applied to the study of VII, XI and XII cranial nerves in 5 normal subjects, comparing the results with those obtained by conventional electrical stimulation. This technique allows us to study in a painless way the nerve function in all its pathway (motor cortex-motoneurone-muscle). In some cases, TMS yields potentials of a greater amplitude than those obtained by electrical stimulation, due to its capacity to penetrate deeply and stimulate all the fibers of the nerve.

Neuronal expression of c-fos product in the cat rostral ventrolateral medulla was studied by immunohistochemistry. Spinally projecting neurons of the subretrofacial (SRF) nucleus were pre-labeled by retrograde transport of fluorescent latex microspheres from the lumbar cord. In 3 animals which were bled by approximately 25% blood volume from a carotid cannula, 48-62% of SRF-spinal neurons expressed c-fos immunoreactivity. In 2 control animals, the corresponding values were 2% and 4%. The data show that bulbospinal neurons of presumed vasomotor function express c-fos in response to hemorrhage.

Monosodium L-glutamate (MSG), as a neurotoxin, was administered subcutaneously at a dose of 4 mg/g body weight to rat pups on days 1 and 3 postnatally. The sexual receptivity expressed as lordosis quotient (LQ) in MSG-treated female rats (2.5 months old) was significantly lower than that of the normal female ones, and this poor sexual receptivity of MSG-treated females could be improved by pinealectomy at the age of six weeks. In order to investigate the relationship between the inhibitory role of the pineal gland and the extrahypothalamic inhibitory pathway, normal control and MSG-treated rat

Binding parameters of [3H]muscimol ([3H]MUS) and [3H]flunitrazepam ([ 3H]FLU) were determined in the thalamic area of overlap of nigro- and pallidothalamic pathways at short- (1-10 weeks) and long-term (6-11 months) survival times after kainic acid lesioning of substantia nigra pairs reticularis (SNr) and/or entopeduncular nucleus (EPN). No statistically significant lesion-induced changes in Kd could be established in any of the lesioned groups. Bmax values for both binding sites, when corrected for nerve cell densities, revealed some changes in all but one instance (no statistically significa

The use of histochemical methods, including enzyme histochemical, immunohistochemical and pathway tracing methods, as tools for testing hypotheses about the mechanism of neural evolution is reviewed. Many hypotheses have been proposed to explain aspects of neural evolution, including the occurrence of encephalization, quantitative changes in homologous cell populations, changes in the alignment, orientation and parcellation of neuronal populations into cytoarchitectonic units, and the appearance of new neuronal phenotypes. It is argued here that neural evolution must be viewed as a set of coor

The subfornical organ, the median preoptic nucleus, and the OVLT are arranged in a dorsal to ventral column to form the lamina terminalis ("end wall") of the third cerebral ventricle. In the decade of the 1970s, several labs showed that angiotensin II produces many of its effects in the brain by interacting with the structures of the lamina terminalis. This review concentrates on drinking behavior and on two structures: The subfornical organ as an important sensor of blood-borne angiotensin, and the median preoptic nucleus as a sensitive zone for central angiotensin. In the 1980s, histochemist

Thirty-five patients (age: 53 +/- 13 years) with dual A-V nodal pathways pattern were studied following autonomic blockade (propranolol 0.2 mg/kg and atropine 0.04 mg/kg). Six of them had "idionodal" paroxysmal reentrant supraventricular tachycardia. After autonomic blockade the dual A-V nodal pathways pattern remained in 20 patients (57%) and disappeared in 15; however, in the latter, the effective refractory period of the fast pathway decreased significantly and the disappearance of the slow pathway conduction may not have been real since the marked shortening of the fast pathway refractory

Somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) to median nerve, ulnar nerve, thumb, middle finger, and posterior tibial nerve stimulation were recorded in a patient with a discrete resection of part of the postcentral somatosensory cortex as a treatment for focal epilepsy. Comparison of the different stimulation sites confirmed electrophysiologically the restricted locus of the lesion. The results strongly suggest that the early negative component (N20) and subsequent components recorded postcentrally are of cortical origin and depend upon postcentral gyrus cytoarchitectonic areas 3, 2, and 1. A clinicoanatomic study of 12 patients with tegmental-type primary pontine hemorrhage proved the presence of a gustatory disturbance among other clinical symptoms on the same side of the tongue as that of the pontine lesion, and suggested the secondary pathway of gustatory sensation from the solitary tract nucleus ascends without decussation in the homolateral pontine tegmentum. These results contradict textbook descriptions regarding the human secondary gustatory pathway.

The organization of certain of the major afferents to the hippocampus and dentate gyrus has been studied in normal and reeler mutant mice using the autoradiographic and the anterograde degeneration methods. The distribution of the hippocampal and dentate afferents which arise in the medial and lateral parts of the entorhinal cortex and the hippocampus of both sides, has been found to be generally similar to that previously described in the rat, but there are a few minor differences that are discussed in the text. Despite the marked ectopia of many of the neurons in the hippocampal formation in

Integration of our own morphological observations into recent ultrastructural, biochemical, and neuropharmacological results on the carotid body led to a new hypothesis on chemoreceptor function: (i) Glomus cells with small dense-cored vesicles (type IB cells) that store norepinephrine are chemoreceptors. (ii) Glomus cells with large dense-cored vesicles (type IA), which are postsynaptic to the other glomus cell type and presynaptic to afferent nerve endings, are dopaminergic interneurons that suppress the afferent discharge frequency during normoxia by releasing dopamine. (iii) The hypoxic st
