The impact of paclitaxel and carboplatin chemotherapy on the autonomous nervous system of patients with ovarian cancer.

BACKGROUND: Paclitaxel-based regimens are frequently associated with the development of peripheral neuropathy. The autonomous nervous system (ANS) effects, however, of this chemotherapeutic agent remain unexplored. METHODS: We investigated a group of 31 female patients with ovarian cancer receiving treatment with paclitaxel and carboplatin, as well as a group of 16 healthy age- and gender-matched healthy volunteers. All study participants completed a questionnaire and were assessed neurophysiologically at three time points (baseline, 3-4 months and 6-8 months following the onset of chemothera

[Restless legs syndrome].

The restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a common neurological disorder to take possession of increasing attention. RLS is characterized by an urge to move the legs, usually accompanied by uncomfortable or unpleasant sensations, that occurs or worsen at rest and is relieved by activity. The symptoms of RLS have a major impact on nocturnal sleep and daytime functions. The clinical diagnostic criteria were established and published in 2003 by International Restless Legs Syndrome Study Group (IRLSSG). All four essential criteria must be met for a positive diagnosis. However, RLS encompassed an idiopat

MRI evidence that docosahexaenoic acid ethyl ester improves myelination in generalized peroxisomal disorders.

OBJECTIVE: We have found that docosahexaenoic acid (DHA; 22:6n-3), an important constituent of the CNS and retina, is dramatically decreased in patients with generalized peroxisomal disorders. Such a DHA deficiency could be pathogenic. Our aim was to test the possible beneficial effects of normalizing the DHA levels in these patients. The current report focuses on MRI changes during the treatment and reports follow-up evidence of myelin improvement in five peroxisomal disorder patients treated with DHA. METHODS: DHA ethyl ester (DHA-EE), about 90% pure, was used at daily oral doses of 100 to

Psychosensorial and related phenomena in panic disorder and in temporal lobe epilepsy.

Since Cullen coined the term "neurosis" in the 18th century, medical investigators have searched the neural substrates of conditions we now classify as anxiety disorders. Harper and Roth in 1962 hypothesized that the temporal lobes might represent one such substrate for phobic-anxious patients with depersonalization-derealization (DD); the association between the presumed temporal lobe feature and phobic anxiety was so compelling that Roth (in 1959) described the condition as "phobic-anxiety-depersonalization" syndrome. Introduced into our current nosology as panic disorder-agoraphobia (PDA),

SPINDILOMETER: a model describing sleep spindles on EEG signals for polysomnography.

This paper aims to present a model called SPINDILOMETER, which we propose to be integrated into polysomnography (PSG) devices for researchers focused on electrophysiological signals in PSG, physicians, and technicians practicing sleep in clinics, by examining the methods of the sleep electroencephalogram (EEG) signal analysis in recent years. For this purpose, an assist diagnostic model for PSG has been developed that measures the number and density of sleep spindles by analyzing EEG signals in PSG. EEG signals of 72 volunteers, 51 males and 21 females (age; 51.7 ± 3.42 years and body mass ind

Analyzing Fusion Pore Dynamics and Counting the Number of Acetylcholine Molecules Released by Exocytosis.

Acetylcholine (ACh) is a critical neurotransmitter influencing various neurophysiological functions. Despite its significance, quantitative methods with adequate spatiotemporal resolution for recording a single exocytotic ACh efflux are lacking. In this study, we introduce an ultrafast amperometric ACh biosensor that enables 50 kHz electrochemical recording of spontaneous single exocytosis events at axon terminals of differentiated cholinergic human SH-SY5Y neuroblastoma cells with sub-millisecond temporal resolution. Characterization of the recorded amperometric traces revealed seven distinct

Trigeminal Somatosensory Evoked Potentials During Neurosurgical Procedures Using Electrical Stimulation of the Lips Under General Anesthesia.

Background Intraoperative neurophysiology monitoring is rapidly evolving with the advent of newer modalities. Long latency sensory evoked potentials from the trigeminal nerve distribution have rarely been demonstrated during neurosurgical procedures. Trigeminal sensory evoked potential (TSEP) can be used to prevent nerve injury during surgical procedures, such as those for trigeminal neuralgia and tumors involving the trigeminal nerve and pathway. Methodology We attempted to record TSEP from 12 subjects who underwent various neurosurgical procedures with low doses of inhalational anesthetic ag

Phase-amplitude coupling between low- and high-frequency activities as preoperative biomarker of focal cortical dysplasia subtypes.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether ictal phase-amplitude coupling (PAC) between high-frequency activity and low-frequency activity could be used as a preoperative biomarker of Focal Cortical Dysplasia (FCD) subtypes. We hypothesize that FCD seizures present unique PAC characteristics that may be linked to their specific histopathological features. METHODS: We retrospectively examined 12 children with FCD and refractory epilepsy who underwent successful epilepsy surgery. We identified ictal onsets recorded with stereo-EEG. We estimated the strength of PAC between low-frequencies and high-frequenci

Neuromonitoring Identifies Occlusion of Femoral Artery in STA-MCA Bypass Procedure: A Case Report.

Intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring (IONM) is a technique used to assess the somatosensory and gross motor systems during surgery. While it is primarily used to detect and prevent surgically induced nervous system trauma, it can also detect and prevent injury to the nervous system that is the result of other causes such as trauma or ischemia that occur outside of the operative field as a result of malpositioning or other problematic physiologic states. We present a case study where a neuromonitoring alert altered the surgical procedure, though the alert was not correlated to the site …

Utility of Preoperative Electrodiagnosis Together with Peripheral Nerve High-Resolution Ultrasound: A Complex Case Report of Neurofibromatosis Type I.

Our case report underscores the importance of electroneuromyography (ENMG) combined with peripheral nerve high-resolution ultrasound (HRUS) in the evaluation of neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1). A 49-year-old woman affected by NF1 came to our attention because of new-onset left arm weakness and atrophy. Debulking of a cervicothoracic C7-T1 neurofibroma had been performed 8 years earlier. On current admission, magnetic resonance imaging disclosed increased lesion volume that was thought to cause the neurologic deficits by compressing the C8 root. Findings from intraoperative neurophysiologic moni

Contrasting time and frequency domains: ERN and induced theta oscillations differentially predict post-error behavior.

The present study investigated the neural dynamics of error processing in both the time and frequency domains, as well as associated behavioral phenomena, at the single-trial level. We used a technique that enabled us to separately investigate the evoked and induced aspects of the EEG signal (Cohen & Donner, 2013, Journal of Neurophysiology, 110[12], 2752-2763). We found that at the single-trial level, while the (evoked) error-related negativity (ERN) predicted only post-error slowing (PES)-and only when errors occurred on incongruent trials-induced frontal midline theta power served as a robu

Motor Evoked Potentials Double Train Stimulation: Optimal Number of Pulses per Train.

PURPOSE: In neurophysiologic intraoperative monitoring, double train transcranial electrical stimulation (dt-TES) for motor evoked potentials (MEP) consists of an initial, facilitating train of stimuli followed by a second, testing, train. The optimal number of pulses per train has not been determined. The authors wanted to determine the optimal combination of pulses per train that produced the highest MEP amplitude. METHODS: Dt-TES of 4 + 4, 2 + 7, and 7 + 2 pulses were attempted in 20 patients and compared with single train TES of nine pulses. Latencies of the MEP responses were also compar

Anterior Cervical Pial Arteriovenous Malformation Associated with a Spinal Aneurysm: Case Report and Review of the Literature.

BACKGROUND: Cervical pial arteriovenous malformation (AVM) is an extremely rare condition that can present with progressive myelopathy or acute hemorrhage (subarachnoid or intramedullary). The classification process is still a topic of discussion, given the limited number of cases described, as well as correct therapeutic management. Here, we present a case of a young female with anterior cervical pial AVM associated with spinal aneurysm. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 31-year-old female in the fifth month of pregnancy presented to the emergency department for tetraparesis, sphincter disturbances, and b

Dynamic mapping of the corticospinal tract in open cordotomy and myelomeningocele surgery.

OBJECT: Spinal cord surgeries carry a high risk for significant neurological impairments. The initial techniques for spinal cord mapping emerged as an aid to identify the dorsal columns and helped select a safe myelotomy site in intramedullary tumor resection. Advancements in motor mapping of the cord have also been made recently, but exclusively with tumor surgery. We hereby present our experiences with dynamic mapping of the corticospinal tract (CST) in other types of spinal cord procedures that carry an increased risk of postoperative motor deficit, and thus could directly benefit from this

Updated View on the Relation of the Pineal Gland to Autism Spectrum Disorders.

Identification of the biological features of autism is essential for designing an efficient treatment and for prevention of the disorder. Though the subject of extensive research, the neurophysiological features of autism remain unclear. One of the proposed biological causes of autism is malfunction of the pineal gland and deficiency of its principal hormone, melatonin. The main function of melatonin is to link and synchronize the body's homeostasis processes to the circadian and seasonal rhythms, and to regulate the sleep-wake cycle. Therefore, pineal dysfunction has been implicated based on

[Analysis of mental states based on peripheral organ activity].

Behavioral tests using rodents are widely used for assessing mental states of animals and the effects of pharmacological drugs on psychiatric disorders. However, the results of behavioral tests are sometimes inconsistent due to individual differences. To evaluate animal's mental states based on internal organ activity, we recently developed a new electrophysiological method to simultaneously monitor cortical local field potentials, electrocardiograms, electromyograms, respiratory signals, and vagus nerve spikes in a freely moving rodent. Here, we introduce some results obtained from an elevate
