The symptomatic profile of panic disorder is shaped by the 5-HTTLPR polymorphism.

The short allele of a functional polymorphism (5-HTTLPR) in the serotonin transporter (5-HTT) promoter is associated with reduced serotonin transporter expression, lower in vivo 5-HTT binding, higher neuroticism and amygdala reactivity as well as facilitated fear conditioning and is a candidate variant for panic disorder. However, case-control studies have consistently failed to show an association between 5-HTTLPR and panic disorder. As psychiatric disorders are broadly defined phenotypes merging different symptoms to syndromes, they may not be very well suited for genetic association studies…

Hostility and change in cognitive function over time in older blacks and whites.

OBJECTIVE: To test whether the level of hostility predicted the rate of cognitive decline in a community of older blacks and whites and whet … rate of decline. Results were unchanged after controlling for depressive symptoms, chronic health, neuroticism, and social and cognitive activity patterns, or when persons with cognitive impairment at baseline were excluded. The association was similar in blacks and whites. CONCLUSION: The results suggest that hostility is associated with level of cognitive …

Predictors and profiles of treatment non-adherence and engagement in services problems in early psychosis.

Treatment adherence in early psychosis individuals is considered problematic. Some studies have tried to understand reasons for medication n … as a child, lack of knowledge regarding consumer rights, difficulties in building an alliance, low neuroticism and high agreeableness predicted poor service engagement. Profiles of non-adherers or low service engagement were strongly linked to childhood trauma, and high agreeableness, as well as more severe symptoms and poor alliance. Males with histories of …

Childhood and adolescent predictors of late onset criminal careers.

This study explores the emergence of a criminal career in adulthood. The main hypothesis tested is that late criminal onset (at age 21 or la … nset offenders compared with nonoffenders included teacher-rated anxiousness at ages 12-14 and high neuroticism at age 16. It is concluded that being nervous and withdrawn protected boys against offending in adolescence but that these protective effects tended to wear off after age 21. These findings show that adult offending can be predicted from childhood, …

[Psychopathology and creativity].

In this paper, a concept has been presented stating that the process of creativity may be connected with psychopathological features such as … rsons, as to increased indexes of creativity as well as such temperamental features as cyclothymia, neuroticism and openness. An association has been also found between the dimension of"psychoticism", schizotypal features and the measures of creativity. Childhood sexual abuse, stressful life events and risk for major depression in women.

BACKGROUND: In animals, early trauma can produce long-lasting changes in sensitivity to the pathogenic effects of stress. To explore whether similar processes occur in humans, we examine whether childhood sexual abuse (CSA) in women alters sensitivity in adulthood to the depressogenic effects of stressful life events (SLEs). METHOD: A history of CSA was obtained from a population-based sample of 1404 female adult twins. Cox Proportional hazard models were used to predict onsets of episodes of DSM-III-R major depression (MD) in the past year from previously assessed levels of neuroticism (N), …
