Data-Driven Scheduling Strategies to Minimize Fatigue in Rotating Night-Shift Nurses.

BACKGROUND: Shift work is essential for continuous patient care but disrupts circadian rhythms, leading to increased fatigue, burnout, and the risk of errors. Existing guidelines for managing nurse fatigue remain broad and often lack actionable strategies for roster design and staffing. AIM: This study aimed to identify optimal shift patterns and sleep-wake schedules that minimize fatigue among rotating night-shift nurses, using mathematical modeling to provide actionable recommendations for nursing management. METHODS: A quantitative observational study was conducted with 273 nurses working

Structural Racism in Healthcare: Nurses' Ethical and Professional Responsibility to Lead Structural Reform.

BACKGROUND: Structural racism remains a pervasive and deeply embedded determinant of healthcare inequity globally. Despite strengthened professional standards and policy commitments to equity, racialised populations continue to experience substantial disparities in healthcare access, quality, safety and outcomes. These inequities are sustained not only through interpersonal encounters but also through structural conditions embedded within healthcare systems, workforce arrangements, governance processes and organisational cultures. Structural racism additionally affects nurses' wellbeing, workf

A Family-Centred Paediatric Delirium Bundle: A Feasibility Study.

BACKGROUND: Paediatric delirium (PD) is a common disorder in critically ill children. PD management, however, needs improvement. To this end, we developed a family-centred non-pharmacological delirium management bundle based on consensus from paediatric intensive care unit experts and parents. The bundle included interventions such as developing a day structure and encouraging parent presence. AIM: We aimed to test the feasibility of our PD bundle by investigating acceptability, implementation and practicality for parents, nurses and physicians. STUDY DESIGN: A multiple-method process evalua

Beyond Lip Service: A Position Paper to Truly Stimulate Shared Decision-Making.

AIM: To discuss how shared decision-making (SDM) is currently practised in hospitals, to highlight the essential-yet often underacknowledged-contribution of nurses to inclusive SDM in life-prolonging treatment decisions, and to propose a five-step implementation plan to strengthen the role of patients in the SDM process. DESIGN: A position paper on current SDM practices. METHODS: To take a position, we drew on knowledge gained from six empirical studies conducted by our research group and evaluated these findings in light of the most recent literature. RESULTS: A five-step implementation pl

A knowledge graph-driven paradigm for holistic symptom management: development and evaluation of a nurse-led KG-QA system in community palliative care.

BACKGROUND: Community nurses play a pivotal role in palliative care but face barriers in managing complex symptoms, such as fragmented knowledge and a lack of community-tailored evidence-based guidance, impairing clinical efficiency. The aim of this study was to develop and evaluate a knowledge graph-based question-answering system for symptom management in community palliative care. METHODS: A three-phase codesign study guided by the Knowledge-to-Action framework was conducted. Phase 1 (Knowledge Creation): A Symptom Management Knowledge Base (Knowledge Product I) was developed through a cod

Patients Satisfied with Care Report Better Quality of Life and Self-Rated Health-Cross-Sectional Findings Based on Hospital Quality Data.

BACKGROUND: Satisfaction with care is an important indicator of health care quality. However, if this process measure is associated with patients' outcomes in real-world data is largely unknown. We, therefore, aimed to evaluate if satisfaction with physician- and nurse-related care is associated with quality of life and self-rated health among inpatients at the University Hospital Hamburg-Eppendorf in Germany. METHOD: We used standard hospital quality survey data of 4925 patients treated at various departments. We used multiple linear regressions to examine an association between satisfaction

Nurses' perspectives on medication errors and prevention strategies in residential aged care facilities through a national survey.

BACKGROUND: Medication errors are common in residential aged care facilities (RACFs) due to several factors. Effective medication management is essential to prevent medication errors among older people particularly due to the complexity of co-morbidities they can experience. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to examine and quantify the contributing factors of medication errors from nurses' perspectives and the prevention strategies to reduce medication errors among older adults living in RACFs. METHODS: A survey with 140 completed responses from registered nurses (RNs) and endorsed enrolled nurse
