[The pathology and genetic background of myeloma].

Plasma cell myeloma is a heterogeneous hematologic malignancy of plasma cells, occurring dominantly in the elderly population. It is now accepted that all myeloma cases are preceded by a clinically silent expansion of clonal plasma cells, known as monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance. Our knowledge on the genetics of myeloma is still limited and lags behind other well-characterized hematological malignancies. One of the reasons of this fact is the difficulty to induce metaphases within the malignant plasma cell population. With the development of new molecular techniques (microar

[Pathology and differential diagnosis of immunotactoid glomerulopathy].

Objective: To study the morphologic changes of immunotactoid glomerulopathy and to investigate the clinical pathological features and differential diagnosis. Methods: Renal biopsy was observed under the light microscope, immunofluorescence and electron microscopy in a case of newly diagnosed immunotactoid glomerulopathy. Results: This patient clinically presented with nephrotic syndrome and hypertension, without family history of renal diseases. Light microscopy showed that diffusely massive and specific protein deposition in the glomerulus in Masson staining. Immunofluorescence revealed IgG,

Veterinary Forensic Pathology of Animal Sexual Abuse.

Animal sexual abuse (ASA) involves harm inflicted on animals for the purposes of human sexual gratification and includes such terms as besti … dence and biologic analyses; radiographic studies; and a complete forensic necropsy, including histopathology. Gross lesions identified in ASA victims include injuries to the anus, rectum, penis, scrotum, nipples, and vagina; the presence of foreign bodies; and abrasions, bruising, and other evidence of nonaccidental injury. Specialized procedures, includin …

Forensic Veterinary Pathology: Sharp Injuries in Animals.

Sharp-force injuries are injuries caused by a mechanical force using sharp objects against the skin. Sharp-force injuries are mainly classified as stab, incised, chop, and therapeutic wounds and are less frequent than blunt-force injuries in animals. The analysis of the edges of the wound is crucial, especially if more than one type of lesion is involved. It may be difficult to differentiate between sharp trauma and blunt trauma, because lacerations can resemble incised wounds. The accurate documentation and examination of these injuries may indicate the instrument involved, the relationship b

Pathology of thyroid in acquired immunodeficiency syndrome.

BACKGROUND: The course of human immunodeficiency virus infection and the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome can be complicated by a variety of endocrine abnormalities, including abnormalities of thyroid gland. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study was designed to understand the spectrum of pathology of thyroid in Indian patients with AIDS. The present study describes the findings of retrospective autopsy findings of 158 patients with AIDS which revealed infectious diseases from a time period before the use of highly active antiretroviral regimen. RESULTS: A wide range of bacterial, fungal, and v…

Tau pathology in Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease revisited.

Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) is a human prion disease with different etiologies. To determine the spectrum of tau pathologies in CJD, we assessed phospho-Tau (pTau) immunoreactivities in 75 sporadic CJD cases including an evaluation of the entorhinal cortex and six hippocampal subregions. Twelve cases (16%) showed only small tau-immunoreactive neuritic profiles. Fifty-two (69.3%) showed additional tau pathology in the medial temporal lobe compatible with primary age related tauopathy (PART). In 22/52 cases the lower pTau immunoreactivity load in the entorhinal cortex as compared to subiculu…

Imaging submandibular pathology in the paediatric patient.

A wide range of pathologies may arise from the submandibular space (SMS) or submandibular gland (SMG) in children. We review herein the normal anatomy of the SMS and describe the role of imaging in the evaluation of SMS lesions. A schematic approach for the categorisation of SMS pathology based on imaging characteristics is provided.

Unexpected cellular players in Rett syndrome pathology.

Rett syndrome is a devastating neurodevelopmental disorder, primarily caused by mutations of methyl CpG-binding protein 2 (MeCP2). Although the genetic cause of disease was identified over a decade ago, a significant gap still remains in both our clinical and scientific understanding of its pathogenesis. Neurons are known to be primary players in pathology, with their dysfunction being the key in Rett syndrome. While studies in mice have demonstrated a clear causative - and potential therapeutic - role for neurons in Rett syndrome, recent work has suggested that other tissues also contribute s…

[Bulimia nervosa, a pathology with multiple complications].

Bulimia nervosa is an eating disorder associating binge eating with inappropriate compensatory methods. Patients suffer from multiple organic, psychological and social complications. Of these, the somatic consequences are numerous and of varying degrees of seriousness. Regular monitoring is therefore essential in order to identify them and treat them.

Alopecia areata--Part II: diagnosis and pathology.

Alopecia areata is characterized by the abrupt appearance of round or oval, non-scarring, flat, single or multiple areas of alopecia, which may coalesce forming large patches of alopecia. The diagnosis is usually clinical but there are important differentials and dermatopathology may help in this definition.

Reinvestigation of cochlear pathology in circling mice.

The main causes of early hearing deficit in circling mice have been reported to be early degeneration of the organ of Corti and deterioration of spiral ganglion neurons. As an exact cochlear pathology is essential to explain our previous results regarding the auditory brainstem circuits of developing circling mice, we reinvestigated the cochlear pathology in developing circling mice (14, 22, and 38 days old). It has been reported that the organ of Corti in circling mice completely degenerates as early as postnatal day (P) 21 and that circling mice are deaf by P18. Although we confirmed that ci…

[Plasmablast in the pathology of multiple sclerosis].

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune disease targeting oligodendrocyte in the central nervous system and involves heterogeneous pathology that yields considerable nonresponders to the first line therapy interferon (IFN)-β. However, determinants for this clinical efficacy have not been elucidated. Interestingly, an MS-like autoimmune disease neuromyelitis optica (NMO) is exclusively resistant to this therapy and mediated by IL-6-dependnet PBs via producing a disease-specific autoantibody against aquaporin 4 (AQP4) on astrocyte. Therefore, we assumed that IFN-β-nonresponsive patients with MS…
