Testing developmental pathways to antisocial personality problems.

This study examined the development of antisocial personality problems (APP) in young adulthood from disruptive behaviors and internalizing problems in childhood and adolescence. Parent ratings of 507 children's (aged 6-8 years) symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, and anxiety, were linked to self-ratings of adolescents' (aged 14-16 years) symptoms of depression, substance use, conduct problems, and somatic problems, to predict self-ratings of APP in young adulthood (age 20-22 years). The findings suggested a hierarchical development of antisocia

Tricyclic antidepressants in adolescent depression. A case report.

A boy aged 11 years 11 months, with normal premorbid personality, presented with a severe depressive episode with somatic and psychotic features. A clinical response to amitriptyline was complicated by ECG changes leading to the abrupt withdrawal of amitriptyline, with the development of a withdrawal syndrome. Further trials of antidepressant medication were unsuccessful, including paroxetine (clinical deterioration), lofepramine (ECG changes and clinical deterioration), and trazodone (priapism). Finally, a good clinical response to dothiepin augmented with lithium was achieved. ECG changes we

Ethical climate as moderator in the indirect relationship between dark triad traits and organizational pride among polish employees.

Studies have considered the roles of antecedents of organizational pride. However, they have not yet investigated the personality and motivational factors and potential interactions between the ethical environment, personality traits, and employees' needs in explaining organizational pride. This study fills the gap within the person-organization fit approach by examining the relationship between dark triad personality traits and organizational pride, mediated by the opportunities to satisfy the need for power and moderated by perceptions of an instrumental ethical climate. The cross-sectional

Quantifying spectral information and redundancy in high-dimensional personality taxonomies: an entropy-based approach.

BACKGROUND: Personality assessment involves the collection and organization of information into multidimensional taxonomies. However, no routinely used index directly quantifies the amount of information encoded in such taxonomies. Effective dimensionality (ED) is a Shannon entropy-based metric that uses eigenvalue distributions to quantify a system's spectral information as the effective number of non-redundant components. Although ED has been applied across fields ranging from physics to political science, it remains underutilized in psychological assessment. METHODS: After establishing an

A theory-driven rationale for EMDR therapy among patients with a personality disorder.

Personality disorders (PDs) are prevalent and debilitating conditions characterised by enduring disturbances in self-functioning, affect regulation, impulse control, and interpersonal relationships. Although several evidence-based psychotherapies are available, their accessibility and efficiency remain limited due to long treatment durations, high intensity, substantial dropout rates, and restricted treatment capacity. The purpose of the present paper is to present an alternative developmental and treatment perspective on PDs and to review the available literature on the effects of eye movemen

Pathological Parasocial Attachment Associated With Suicidal Behavior in a Patient With Schizoaffective Disorder and Borderline Personality Disorder: A Case Report.

Parasocial attachments are one-sided emotional relationships with public figures that are generally benign and may provide emotional comfort, social connection, and identity development. In vulnerable individuals, however, these attachments may become maladaptive when associated with significant emotional distress, functional impairment, or suicidal behavior. Limited literature exists regarding the role of parasocial attachments in individuals with borderline personality pathology and severe mental illness. We present the case of a 30-year-old woman with schizoaffective disorder, depressive ty

Exploring the role of affective temperaments: predicting major depressive disorder in the context of borderline personality disorder.

PURPOSE: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a complex condition believed to arise from a multifaceted interplay of genetic, environmental, and biological factors. In the pursuit of understanding its etiology, two elements that warrant investigation are borderline personality disorder (BPD) and affective temperaments. We aim to gain deeper insights into the mechanisms underlying this debilitating mental health condition. METHOD: The dataset comprises individuals who sought assistance from psychiatry outpatient clinics for diverse reasons during the period spanning from 2018 to 2022. These indi

Predicting dropout and non-response to psychotherapy for personality disorders: A study protocol focusing on therapist, patient, and the therapeutic relationship.

BACKGROUND: The abandonment of psychotherapeutic treatments is influenced by various factors, including patient characteristics, therapist traits, and the therapeutic relationship. Despite the well-documented importance of these factors, limited empirical research has focused on the role of the therapeutic relationship and the characteristics of therapist-patient dyads in predicting treatment dropout. This study protocol outlines a longitudinal research project aimed at predicting dropout and non-response in psychotherapy for individuals with personality disorders. The research seeks to identi

Validating the German version of the Personality Disorder Severity-ICD-11 Scale using nominal response models.

The International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) features a new classification of personality disorders (PD), focusing on the severity of PD. Although there are numerous self-report measures that assess PD severity, to date only the Personality Disorder Severity-ICD-11 (PDS-ICD-11) is based on ICD-11's operationalization of PD. Initial results indicated that the PDS-ICD-11 measures a unidimensional construct, but the assumptions made for scoring its bipolar items had not been fully examined. The aim of this study is to fill this gap and investigate the latent structure of the German versi

The psychological costs and benefits of being highly persistent: personality profiles distinguish mood disorders from anxiety disorders.

BACKGROUND: The personality trait of Persistence is highly valued by conscientious overachievers, but it has both psychological costs and benefits. The interactions among multiple personality factors influencing the development of mood and anxiety disorders have been confounded in prior clinical samples, but can be disentangled in terms of their underlying brain circuitry and influence on perception of emotional stimuli. METHODS: 285 individuals who represented the full range of personality variation in a large sample of adult volunteers from the general community of Israel were selected for

The mediating role of self-critical rumination in the relationship between neuroticism and psychopathology among Hispanics: Testing a moderated mediation model.

INTRODUCTION: Over the last decade, Hispanics in the United States have experienced an increase in the prevalence of psychopathology. Research indicates that certain personality traits (e.g., neuroticism) play important roles in the development of psychopathology. However, there is a dearth of research on links between personality traits and mental health among Hispanics, and even less work has examined potential mechanisms that might explain these links. In the present study, we investigated the direct and indirect links between neuroticism and psychopathology through self-critical rumination

A systematic review of post-traumatic growth in ambulance personnel: facilitators and prevalence rates.

INTRODUCTION: Ambulance personnel are exposed to traumatic and stressful situations, which can increase the risk of mental health conditions, such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). High rates of PTSD have been found in ambulance personnel (Petrie et al., 2018), but no review is available to examine post-traumatic growth (PTG - positive psychological change following a trauma) in this population. This literature review provides an overview of the prevalence rates and facilitators that may contribute to PTG in ambulance personnel. METHODS: A systematic search was conducted on EBSCOhost

Additional Validation of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-3 (MMPI-3) Eating Concerns Scale.

Maladaptive eating behaviors are typically associated with significant impairment in psychological functioning more broadly. The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) family of instruments has traditionally been the most frequently used psychological assessment of psychopathology by clinical psychologists. The most recent version, the MMPI-3, features a new Eating Concerns (EAT) scale that screens for the presence of problematic eating behaviors. The goals of the current study were (a) to independently replicate validity correlations reported from the college sample during EAT sca

Daily nonsuicidal self-injury thoughts in emerging adulthood: The relevance of pre-adolescent borderline traits.

Longitudinal studies exploring the role of early personality vulnerabilities as risk factors for later NSSI dynamics are scarce. In this study, we assess how pre-adolescent borderline personality pathology (BPP) traits (assessed at mean age 12.78; SDage = 1.38, age range = 7.17-14.78) shape dynamic links between daily socio-emotional dysregulation and NSSI thoughts during emerging adulthood (Mage = 20.96, SDage = 1.63). Mothers of 131 children completed questionnaires about their child's BPP traits in pre-adolescence. These children were re-assessed eight years later and were asked to complete

Personality traits and peritoneal dialysis patients' prognosis.

Objective: Peritoneal dialysis (PD) requires high patient conscientiousness. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the relationship between conscientiousness score and prognosis in PD patients. Methods: The ten-item Big Five Personality Inventory's Chinese version was used to assess the conscientiousness score. Basic clinical information, prior medical history, hematological examination results, the occurrence of the first peritonitis and catheter-related infection, the start of hemodialysis, and the time of renal transplantation were collected. The patients were split into two groups, high and lo

Neuroticism and Psychological Stress in Patients Suffering Oral Lichen Planus: Research Evidence of Psycho-Stomatology?

Psychosocial factors influence the development, exacerbation, or aggravation of some oral diseases. However, the possible relationship between personality traits, affective disorders, and psychological stress in oral diseases, and their impact on oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL), has not been fully clarified. The aim of the present study was to determine the association of neuroticism and stress with the presence of oral lichen planus (OLP), and to discover whether or not these factors impact OHRQoL. This is a case-control study matched for age and sex. The case group (OLP group) w

How much does that cost? Examining the economic costs of crime in North America attributable to people with psychopathic personality disorder.

Cost of illness research has established that mental disorders lead to significant social burden and massive financial costs. A significant gap exists for the economic burden of many personality disorders, including psychopathic personality disorder (PPD). In the current study, we used a top-down prevalence-based cost of illness approach to estimate bounded crime cost estimates of PPD in the United States and Canada. Three key model parameters (PPD prevalence, relative offending rate of individuals with PPD, and national costs of crime for each country) were informed by existing literature. Se

The Assessment of Identity Development in Adolescence (AIDA) Questionnaire: First Psychometric Evaluation in Two North American Samples of Young People.

The Assessment of Identity Development in Adolescence (AIDA) is a recently developed measure of identity diffusion in young people. Originally validated in Switzerland, the English version has not yet been validated. Our aim was to evaluate the AIDA's internal factor structure, internal consistency, incremental validity, and relations to other variables in adolescents and young adults and derive clinical cutoffs for use in clinical settings. Study 1, involving 2,119 undergraduate students between the ages of 18-25 years, confirmed the expected bi-factor structure for the AIDA. Study 2 involved
