Results of independently interpreted computerized stationary platform posturography and white noise rotational tests were compared with diagnoses for 110 patients. Using the criterion that an abnormal result from either test classified the subject as abnormal, the sensitivity estimate for the pair of tests was 78% for persons with diagnoses known to result in vestibular dysfunction. The specificity estimate was 90%. Both a vestibulo-ocular and a vestibulo-spinal test were required for effective screening. Consecutive tests performed over five days showed the rotation test to be much less varia

Static voluntary efforts, both inspiratory and expiratory (executed with the glottis open against a closed airway) are commonly utilized for the evaluation of correct esophageal balloon positioning for indirect pleural pressure measurement. Agreement between delta Pm (change in mouth pressure) and delta Pes (change in esophageal pressure) indicates the valid indirect determination of pleural pressure. Measurements of delta Pes are more commonly made with the thorax in the upright position, and some investigators have reservations about determinations carried out in the supine position. In the

Postural assessments of the lumbar spine lack valuable information about its properties. The purpose of this study was to assess neutral zone (NZ) characteristics via in vivo lumbar spine passive stiffness and relate NZ characteristics to standing lumbar lordosis. A comparison was made between those that develop low back pain during prolonged standing (pain developers) and those that do not (nonpain developers). Twenty-two participants with known pain status stood on level ground, and median lumbar lordosis angle was calculated. Participants were then placed in a near-frictionless jig to chara

Whole-body vibration (WBV) is widely used in rehabilitation, clinical practice and sports to improve various health conditions and enhance muscle performance. However, the biomechanical mechanisms underlying these beneficial effects remain unclear. Although vibration transmission during WBV training has been investigated in standing postures, seated postures remain largely unexplored. This study investigated how three sitting postures (slouched, upright, and tense) affect vibration transmission to and through the human body during WBV exposure. Twelve healthy male participants were exposed to …

BACKGROUND: Forward Head Posture (FHP) is a prevalent musculoskeletal disorder strongly associated with neck pain and functional disability. Although therapeutic exercise is commonly recommended in clinical practice, there remains a lack of consensus regarding the most effective exercise modalities and optimal intervention duration. This systematic review evaluated the efficacy of therapeutic exercise on posture, pain, and functional outcomes in individuals with FHP, and to identify key factors that may influence treatment effectiveness.
METHODS: Literature searches were conducted following t…

The posture of a person changes due to various factors, causing accidents or illnesses. We examined walking posture using the self-projection method (SPM) in mixed-reality environments where upper- and lower-limb movements were constrained to simulate tasks such as obstacle avoidance and carrying objects. The SPM uses mixed-reality goggles to display a three-dimensional avatar representing the user's walking posture in real time, allowing users to visually monitor and adjust their gait through feedback-driven implicit learning. We selected 10 healthy men and compared their walking postures in …

CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Identifying and managing ocular causes of abnormal head posture (AHP) in children is crucial, as early intervention may not only improve visual function but also prevent the development and progression or even resolve facial asymmetry.
BACKGROUND: The effect of early AHP treatment on halting the development of facial asymmetry, or even eliminating or decreasing it with age, has not yet been evaluated.
METHODS: In this prospective observational study, the quantitative and qualitative facial asymmetry of paediatric patients with superior oblique palsy (n = 8, 53.3%) and Dua…

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to develop and validate an innovative wearable system-flexible pressure sensor pants-to overcome the privacy, comfort, and portability limitations of conventional sleep posture monitoring methods (e.g., infrared imaging and pressure-sensitive mattresses). The study evaluates the system's posture classification performance and its feasibility for continuous monitoring in real-world settings.
METHODS: Thirty-four young adults were recruited. During short-term wakefulness trials, participants wore the sensor-integrated sleep pants and assumed four predefined postures (…

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Bharatanatyam, a venerable and highly structured classical dance form from India, requires significant physical strength, postural control, and precise movements. Dancers often begin to training during adolescence, a crucial period of musculoskeletal development. A key posture in Bharatanatyam, the Araimandi (half-sitting position), involves sustained hip and knee flexion with external rotation, which imposes considerable stress on the lumbopelvic complex. Repeatedly practicing this position may lead to compensatory changes, such as increased lumbar lordosis and anterio…

BACKGROUND: Prolonged use of electronic devices in virtual classrooms can influence posture, neck angle, and body discomfort. Recent evidence suggests that not only "incorrect" postures but also sustained static positions, regardless of being ergonomically correct, contribute to musculoskeletal strain. However, limited studies have directly compared posture and discomfort across different types of devices in a virtual classroom setting.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate differences in posture, neck angle, and body discomfort among female university students during the use of three electronic devices (sm…

Background/Objectives: Mobility screening is standard practice in hospitalized geriatric patients, but clinical assessments alone may not fully capture functional capacity and related risks. This study aimed to describe the physical performance (gait analysis, postural stability and regulation) and clinical-functional status (e.g., Tinetti [TIN], Barthel Index [BI]) in geriatric inpatients, and to explore associations between measures from different domains. Methods: Fifty-five geriatric inpatients (mean age: 84.3 ± 5.47 years, range: 71-97; 49% female) underwent spatiotemporal gait analysis (

The beam walk is widely used to study coordination and balance in rodents. While the task has ethological validity, the main endpoints of "foot slip counts" and "time to cross" are prone to human-rater variability and offer limited sensitivity and specificity. We asked if machine learning-based methods could reveal previously hidden, but biologically relevant, insights from the task. Marker-less pose estimation, using DeepLabCut, was deployed to label 13 anatomical key points on mice traversing the beam. Next, we automated classical endpoint detection, including foot slips, with high recall (>

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of stroke is high in both males and females, and it rises with age. Stroke often leads to sensor and motor issues, such as hemiparesis affecting one side of the body. Poststroke patients require torso stabilization exercises, but maintaining proper posture can be challenging due to their condition.
OBJECTIVE: Our goal was to develop the Postural SmartVest, an affordable wearable technology that leverages a smartphone's built-in accelerometer to monitor sagittal and frontal plane changes while providing visual, tactile, and auditory feedback to guide patients in achi…
