Diabetes mellitus is a global public health problem with a growing prevalence from 14.4% in 2006 to 18.3% in 2022. An association has been reported with psychological variables such as depression, which is also a risk factor for suicidal behavior. This descriptive and analytical study aims to determine the prevalence of suicidal behavior and analyze associated factors in Mexican adults with DM using data from the National Health and Nutrition Survey 2023 (ENSANUT). A multivariate logistic regression model was developed to identify variables associated with the presence of suicidal behavior. Of

The hypothesis that gender differences in children's adjustment is partially influenced by differences in temperament and interactions with same-sex peers was examined. Fifty-seven predominantly White, middle-class preschoolers (29 boys and 28 girls, M age = 54.5 months) participated. Measures were taken of children's arousability, problem behaviors, and tendencies to play with same-sex peers. A semester later, children's peer status was assessed. Analyses revealed that arousability and same-sex peer play interacted to predict problem behaviors. For boys high in arousability, play with same-se…

OBJECTIVE: We examined parent reports of temper tantrum characteristics (e.g., frequency, duration, and behavioral profile) in toddlers and preschoolers and their longitudinal association with internalizing and externalizing adjustment problems.
METHODS: Parents of 1- to 5-year-olds (N = 861, M age = 36 months, 47% girls) reported their child's temper tantrum frequency, duration, and behaviors. A subsample also reported on their child's tantrums and adjustment problems 1 year later (n = 252). We first compared the distribution of temper tantrum frequency and duration for different ages. Next,

The objective was to determine if the high frequency of behavioral problems in Tourette syndrome (TS) probands is the result of the pleiotrophic expression of the Gts genes or due to ascertainment bias. It was possible to distinguish between these two hypotheses by comparing the frequency of these behaviors in nonproband relatives with TS to relatives without TS. Twenty behavioral problems were prospectively assessed in a consecutive series of 361 TS probands, 113 nonproband TS relatives, 380 relatives without TS, and 68 controls, by the administration of a questionnaire based on the Diagnosti

Time-out from positive reinforcement (TOPR) is an effective limit-setting strategy for decreasing disruptive behaviors in young children. However, most publicly available information on TOPR (e.g., social media and other internet outlets) is inaccurate, leading to misperceptions and ineffective implementation by caregivers. We evaluated a brief (2-minute) behavioral, psychoeducational video on the evidence-based use of TOPR to determine whether a low-dose, universal intervention would change caregivers' attitudes, increase knowledge, and improve correct use of TOPR. The primary caregivers of 1

Because educational attainment is associated with well-being in the long term, it is important to understand the developmental processes that enhance academic outcomes during adolescence. Also, although the importance of friends is well documented in adolescence, little is known about how close friends' characteristics work together with youth's own characteristics to shape adolescents' educational trajectories. This study fills an important gap in knowledge by focusing on how middle school students' academic achievement and externalizing problems are associated with their friends' achievement

Parent engagement is an important aspect of parenting during childhood. However, little is known about the unique longitudinal associations of mother and father engagement with adolescents' externalizing and internalizing problem behaviors. This study uses Future of Families and Child Wellbeing Study data to examine the potential direct and indirect associations of parent engagement at age 9 on adolescent externalizing and internalizing behaviors at age 15. The analytic sample size is 1349, and at age 9, the mean age of children was 9.40 years (SD = 0.37). Forty-eight percent of children were …

Irritability encompasses both normative misbehavior in early childhood and clinically significant problems across development. Recent studies have distinguished between tonic (i.e., persistently angry or grumpy mood) and phasic (i.e., temper tantrums or outbursts) forms of irritability and shown that they have different implications for psychopathology and functioning. However, data on this distinction in young (i.e., preschool aged) children are nonexistent. We utilized data from a longitudinal study of a community sample of 462 3-year-olds followed to age 15. We conducted confirmatory factor

Several research teams have previously traced patterns of emerging conduct problems (CP) from early or middle childhood. The current study expands on this previous literature by using a genetically-informed, experimental, and long-term longitudinal design to examine trajectories of early-emerging conduct problems and early childhood discriminators of such patterns from the toddler period to adolescence. The sample represents a cohort of 731 toddlers and diverse families recruited based on socioeconomic, child, and family risk, varying in urbanicity and assessed on nine occasions between ages 2

BACKGROUND: Early intervention efforts designed for youth with problematic sexual behavior (PSB) have strong promise. Prompt identification of youth with PSB is critical to ensuring early intervention and effective response.
OBJECTIVE: The current study explored the complexities of how PSB of youth is identified in the community.
SETTING: A qualitative semi-structured interview approach was utilized to explore the perceptions and experiences of community members involved in cases of youth with PSB.
PARTICIPANTS: Participants included 100 community members from eight geographically diverse l

BACKGROUND: The phenotype of children with XXYY has predominantly been defined by comparison to other sex chromosome aneuploidies trisomies affecting male children; however, the intellectual ability of children with XXYY is lower than children with other sex chromosome aneuploidies trisomies. It is not known to what extent the phenotype identified to date is specific to XXYY, rather than a reflection of lower IQ. This study evaluates the mental health and behaviour of children with XXYY, in comparison to children with intellectual disabilities of heterogeneous genetic origin.

Little is known about the relationship between the long-term hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis functioning and brain structure in children. Glucocorticoid in hair has emerged as an important biomarker of HPA activity. In this study, we investigated the associations of hair cortisol and cortisone concentrations with brain morphology in young children. We included 219 children aged 6-10 years from the Generation R Study in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. We examined cortisol and cortisone concentrations by hair analysis using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry, and assessed brain

INTRODUCTION: In clinical studies of adults and children, broad-spectrum micronutrients (minerals and vitamins) have proven beneficial for improving mood regulation and attention. We report here pilot work whose primary objective was to evaluate the feasibility of studying micronutrient treatment in school-aged children with emotional and behavioral problems. Issues examined included feasibility of participant recruitment from a culturally diverse population, probability of sample retention for a 12-week trial, acceptability of the outcome measures, supplement adherence, as well as trends in t

Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is an autosomal dominant multisystem disorder, with large inter and intrafamilial clinical variability and uncertain prognosis. In children with NF1 cognitive disorders, learning difficulties and behavioral problems are common. The present study aims to establish the neuropsychological and behavioral profiles of 78 patients with NF1, aged between 5 and 18 years, and to examine the relationship between these profiles and the transmission of NF1 (sporadic vs. familial), clinical manifestations, and environmental factors. We used several questionnaires completed by

BACKGROUNDS AND OBJECTIVES: There is well-established evidence that both rumination and depressed mood negatively impact the ability to solve social problems. A preliminary stage of the social problem solving process may be the process of catapulting oneself forward in time to think about the consequences of a problem before attempting to solve it. The aim of the present study was to examine how thinking about the consequences of a social problem being resolved or unresolved prior to solving it influences the solution of the problem as a function of levels of rumination and dysphoric mood.

Oppositional-defiant disorder (ODD) refers to a recurrent pattern of negativistic, defiant, disobedient, and hostile behavior toward authority figures. Research has shown that children with ODD and comorbid mood disorders may be at particular risk for long-term adverse outcomes, including conduct disorder. In this study, the authors examined the effectiveness of a cognitive-behavioral model of intervention--called collaborative problem solving (CPS)--in comparison with parent training (PT) in 47 affectively dysregulated children with ODD. Results indicate that CPS produced significant improvem
