The effect of multiple anthropometric deficits on child mortality: meta-analysis of individual data in 10 prospective studies from developing countries.

BACKGROUND: Child stunting, wasting, and underweight have been individually associated with increased mortality. However, there has not been an analysis of the mortality risk associated with multiple anthropometric deficits. OBJECTIVE: The objective was to quantify the association between combinations of stunting, wasting, and underweight and mortality among children <5 y of age. DESIGN: We analyzed data from 10 cohort studies or randomized trials in low- and middle-income countries in Africa, Asia, and Latin America with 53,767 participants and 1306 deaths. Height-for-age, weight-for-height

Effects of antihypertensive treatment in Asian populations: a meta-analysis of prospective randomized controlled studies (CARdiovascular protectioN group in Asia: CARNA).

To examine the effects of antihypertensive treatment on cardiovascular disease (CVD) in Asian populations, we systematically evaluated prospective randomized studies carried out in Asia (1991-2013). We identified 18 trials with 23,215 and 21,986 hypertensive patients in the intervention (ie, strict blood pressure [BP] lowering or add-on treatment) and reference groups, respectively (mean age, 65 years; follow-up duration, 3.2 years). Analysis was performed through 1) first subgroup: eight trials that compared active antihypertensive treatment with placebo or intensive with less intensive BP co

Designing prospective cohort studies for assessing reproductive and developmental toxicity during sensitive windows of human reproduction and development--the LIFE Study.

The relationship between the environment and human fecundity and fertility remains virtually unstudied from a couple-based perspective in which longitudinal exposure data and biospecimens are captured across sensitive windows. In response, we completed the LIFE Study with methodology that intended to empirically evaluate a priori purported methodological challenges: implementation of population-based sampling frameworks suitable for recruiting couples planning pregnancy; obtaining environmental data across sensitive windows of reproduction and development; home-based biospecimen collection; an

Does osteoporosis increase complication risk in surgical fracture treatment? A protocol combining new endpoints for two prospective multicentre open cohort studies.

BACKGROUND: With an ever-increasing elderly population, orthopaedic surgeons are faced with treating a high number of fragility fractures. Biomechanical tests have demonstrated the potential role of osteoporosis in the increased risk of fracture fixation complications, yet this has not been sufficiently proven in clinical practice. Based on this knowledge, two clinical studies were designed to investigate the influence of local bone quality on the occurrence of complications in elderly patients with distal radius and proximal humerus fractures treated by open reduction and internal fixation.

Effectiveness of hypofractionated radiotherapy in painful bone metastases. Two prospective studies with 1 x 4 Gy and 4 x 4 Gy.

BACKGROUND: Although effectiveness of fractionated radiotherapy for painful bone metastases is well documented, there are unanswered questions regarding the adequacy of low-dose short radiation schedules for long-term pain control which give maximum benefit in patients with a short life expectancy. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Two consecutive non-randomized prospective follow-up studies were performed at a single institution to analyze pain response and duration of response in patients with a variety of primary tumors. Included were only patients with symptomatic nonvertebral bone metastases and wit

Prospective studies of cerebral perfusion and cognitive testing among elderly normal volunteers and patients with ischemic vascular dementia and Alzheimer's disease.

To compare longitudinal changes of cerebral perfusion (CBF) and cognitive status in two common forms of dementia in the elderly, 42 patients with ischemic vascular dementia (IVD), 44 patients with dementia of the Alzheimer type (DAT), and 120 elderly normal volunteers were evaluated prospectively over a mean interval of 3.35 years. Subjects were at least age sixty, (mean age 71.1). Mean bihemispheric cerebral blood flow and cognitive test scores of control subjects were significantly higher than those of both demented groups at entry and remained so. After adjustment for initial CBF, course ov

[Early therapy of congenital hip dislocation and ultrasonic studies of clinically positive cases--results of a prospective epidemiological study in Brünn].

The early diagnosis of CDH in CSFR an in other countries is discussed from different views. To our opinion only the orthopaedic surgeons are able to ensure the high sensitivity and specificity of the clinical tests. In the Brno-prospective epidemiologic study we have examined 19,879 neonates. The frequency of dislocation and instability was 368 cases (18%). The early treatment with Frejka pillow or Pavlik harness has failed only in one case. The systematic second (6 weeks) and third examination (3 months) discovered 19 late diagnosed cases (0.95%). In the era of conventional diagnosis the usua

[Early postoperative morphology of the carotid artery following endarterectomy: systematic prospective studies with a high resolution ultrasound real-time imaging system].

The ultrasonic morphology of the carotid artery following 55 endarterectomies in 50 patients was systematically studied using a high resolution ultrasound duplex system. The typical findings were: At the site of endarterectomy the new vessel wall showed: lack of the "sonographic tunica intima"; the thickness of the vessel wall was reduced with less pronounced ultrasonic structure compared with healthy subjects; the surface toward the lumen was less smooth; "ultrasonically soft" thrombotic layers with irregular surface, individual distribution (sometimes only spots) and thickness (0.5 to 4.0 mm

Prospective clinical feasibility assessment of the Osteoporotic Pelvis Fracture Score (OFP-Score)-a multicenter prospective cohort study.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the feasibility of using the recently developed OF-Pelvis-Score (OFP-Score) for treatment decisions in patients with osteoporotic fractures of the pelvis (OFP) based on standard clinical diagnostics. METHODS: A multicenter prospective cohort study was conducted at 14 trauma centers including 375 consecutive patients who were treated for an OFP over a period of 19 months. All fractures were classified according to the OF-Pelvis-Classification (OFP-Classification). The decision for either conservative or surgical therapy was made independently of the OFP-Score recommendatio

Study of Concussion in Rugby Union through MicroRNAs (SCRUM): a study protocol of a prospective, observational cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: The diagnosis of mild traumatic brain injury or sports-related concussion is a challenge for all clinicians, players, coaches and parents involved in contact sports. Currently, there is no validated objective biomarker available to assess the presence or severity of concussion in sport, and so it is necessary to rely on subjective measures like self-reporting of symptoms which depend on the cooperation of the athlete. There is a significant health risk associated with repetitive injury if the diagnosis is missed, and so there is great value in an objective biomarker to assist dia

Adverse childhood experiences and sarcopenia: a prospective study embedded in the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging.

BACKGROUND: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), known to increase lifelong health risks, have recently been linked to frailty. This study examined whether ACEs predict the onset and progression of sarcopenia, a core component of the frailty phenotype. METHODS: We analysed 23 476 participants aged 45-85 years in the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging with 3-year follow-up (49.5% female; mean age 62.1 ± 9.9). Eight ACEs were assessed using validated retrospective instruments. Associations between ACE count and incident sarcopenia (revised European Working groups on Sarcopenia in Older Peopl

"The DESCRIBE-ALS-FTD study: a prospective multicenter observational study of the ALS-FTD spectrum".

Background: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and frontotemporal dementia (FTD) exhibit significant clinical, genetic and neuropathological abnormalities, and are regarded as belonging to a common disease spectrum, referred to as the ALS-FTD spectrum disorders. Our understanding of the underlying mechanisms of these diseases has advanced significantly, including molecular neuropathology, genetics and molecular pathophysiology. The heterogeneity of these diseases poses significant challenges to translational research and drug development, particularly in sporadic cases. Consequently, there is

The ExPAND Study: A Prospective Association Study into Endometriosis-Associated Pain, Neurosteroid Synthesis, and TRPM3.

Endometriosis-associated pain has debilitating effects on the quality of life of patients. Despite its high prevalence in reproductive-aged women, the pathophysiology is still unknown, impeding the development of targeted treatment approaches. The prospective ExPAND study proposes the neurosteroids pregnenolone sulphate (PS) and dehydroepiandrosterone sulphate (DHEAS) as potential contributors to endometriosis-associated pain, due to their agonistic action at the pain-related ion channel TRPM3. To this end, endometrium, deep endometriosis lesions, and peritoneal fluid were prospectively collec
