Prospective network of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms across adolescent survivors with distinct trajectories of PTSD: A cohort study of the Wenchuan earthquake.

There are multiple trajectories of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms following disasters. Unraveling the patterns of interactions between PTSD symptoms across distinct PTSD trajectories is crucial. This study was aimed at investigating the temporal sequences, changes, and predictive symptoms in PTSD networks over time across distinct PTSD trajectory groups. Data were exacted from the Wenchuan Earthquake Adolescent Health Cohort (WEAHC) study. The current study included 1022 adolescents (424 males) who participated in follow-up surveys at 12 months and 24 months post-earthquake. Se

Engagement with gestational diabetes self-management: a qualitative study from the UK.

INTRODUCTION: Optimal management of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is essential to reduce risks for mother and child. Women with GDM have a tenfold higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes (T2D), particularly those from ethnically diverse or socioeconomically disadvantaged groups. This can be reduced through lifestyle change and annual screening but there is a paucity of data from the UK exploring engagement. Aims were to (1) explore GDM experiences among a diverse sample of UK women and (2) identify factors which could help women engage with GDM self-management guidance during pregnancy

Guiding Registry for Skeletal Dysplasia. Rational Approach in Classification.

The official nosology and classification of genetic skeletal disorders lists more than 500 recognized diagnostic entities and groups them by clinical, radiographic and - if available - molecular data. The list helps in the diagnosis of individual cases, in the delineation of novel disorders, and in building bridges between clinicians and scientists. It can be the basis of a nosology-guided skeletal dysplasia registry and archive. An archive using a slightly modified classification system has been established in Magdeburg/Germany. Its benefits include: i. guidance of molecular testing, ii. disc

Addiction: the urgent need for a paradigm shift.

Severe addictions to drug use and to countless other habits are causing enormous harm around the globe. Massive expenditures and dedicated efforts of police, doctors, addiction therapists, and self-help groups have failed to bring the problem under control, although many individual addicts have been helped. What can society do when our best efforts continue to fail and a menacing problem continues to grow? This paper proposes that a major paradigm shift is required. The currently dominant paradigm assumes that addiction is either an individual disease or an individual moral breach. But this in…

[Stress, job satisfaction, and quality of life in the health professions: the role of burn-out and personality features].

Emotional exhaustion, depersonalisation and personal achievement represent the main dimensions of the "burn-out syndrome" (B.O.). The risk of B.O. is especially elevated among people working in helping professions. These professionals work in settings that are characterised by a very strong emotional involvement. The representative sample of this study consisted of 100 subjects of whom a part of them worked in a psychiatric setting and others who didn't. All of them have been assessed through the M.B.I. and the E.P.Q. The purpose of the present study was especially: 1) to explore the existence

Deciding on surgery: supporting parents of infants with craniosynostosis.

Families face a difficult decision when choosing whether or not to have surgery for their infant with isolated craniosynostosis. While the skull deformity may not affect the child's physical health, growth, or development, it may have psychosocial impacts on a child's social-emotional development, self-esteem, and interpersonal interactions. Parents are challenged to balance surgical risks with potentially positive effects on their child's psychosocial health. The purpose of this research study was to explore parental decision-making related to surgery for isolated craniosynostosis, and to ide

[Behavioral approaches in tobacco control].

In most Western societies, there is an abundance of information on what needs to be done to control the use of tobacco. This paper presents different strategies for addressing tobacco control. Many of the strategies such as increasing taxes, increasing control over promotion of tobacco, and the restriction of smoking should be made a priority. However, there is still the need to provide help for the smoker to quit. The evidence with regards to effective ways of getting smokers to quit and the effectiveness of different modalities is reviewed. Programs found to be effective include self-help, i

Sexual dysfunction.

Sexual dysfunction may adversely affect a woman's self-esteem and her overall sense of well-being. The obstetrician-gynecologist can play an important role by asking the patient about any problems with sexual function. Physiologic changes, disease, surgery, or medical therapy may result in sexual dysfunction. The physician should recognize the potential effects of these conditions on a patient's sexuality and provide the patient with appropriate education and counseling. Patients should also be advised about alternatives for sexual expression, particularly after pelvic surgery. Specific suppor

Use of coaching and technology to improve blood pressure control in Black women with hypertension: Pilot randomized controlled trial study.

Hypertension is the main cause of cardiovascular disease, especially in women. Black women (58%) are affected by higher rates of hypertension than other racial/ethnic groups contributing to increased cardio-metabolic disorders. To decrease blood pressure (BP) in this population, a pilot randomized controlled trial was conducted to examine the effects of Interactive Technology Enhanced Coaching (ITEC) versus Interactive Technology (IT) alone in achieving BP control, adherence to antihypertensive medication, and adherence to lifestyle modifications among Black women diagnosed with and receiving
