OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to compare maternal, neonatal, and second stage of labor characteristics in shoulder dystocia deliveries that result in permanent brachial plexus injury with shoulder dystocia deliveries that result in no injury.
STUDY DESIGN: Our cases were culled from a database of deliveries that resulted in permanent brachial plexus injuries and matched to control cases that were taken from a database of consecutive shoulder dystocia deliveries from one hospital. Deliveries that resulted in injury were excluded from the control cases; those cases with no recorded s

CASE: A 74-year-old female developed left shoulder pain after receiving an influenza vaccine. Her initial physical exam was suggestive of subacromial bursitis, and a corticosteroid injection into the subacromial space resulted in a 50% improvement in her pain. Subsequent MRI demonstrated myositis isolated to the infraspinatus muscle. She was successfully treated with anti-inflammatory medication and physical therapy.
CONCLUSION: Shoulder injury related to vaccine administration (SIRVA) is a rare clinical complication, and myositis in the rotator cuff musculature has not been previously report

INTRODUCTION: Shoulder dislocations can cause acute and chronic instabilities that need to be addressed in order to restore joint functioning. The transfer of the coracoid process has become a feasible surgical procedure in patients with shoulder instability. Several concomitant injuries after recurrent dislocations have been described.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 32-year-old German man presented to our department with a history of recurrent shoulder dislocations. He was diagnosed with an avulsion fracture of the coracoid process and dislocation of an osseous piece with attachment to the conjoined t

Shoulder disorders have been associated with repetitive overhead work and manual lifting. Passive exoskeletons may reduce exposure to physical risk factors associated with shoulder injuries. This repeated-measures study evaluated the initial static, pseudo-static, cognitive, and dynamic fit of three passive shoulder exoskeletons compared to a no-exoskeleton condition. Twenty-four participants (sex-balanced) performed range of motion tasks, simulated manufacturing activities, and a cognitive performance test. Results indicated that sex did not significantly affect any fit outcomes. Cognitive pe…

Posterior shoulder fracture-dislocation is a rare and often misdiagnosed injury leading to locked chronic dislocation and complicated management. Surgical management options vary based on chronicity, defect size, and patient-specific factors, with the modified McLaughlin procedure being a joint-preserving option for younger patients with large defects. We present a case of a 31-year-old male who had a missed locked posterior shoulder fracture-dislocation with a large reverse Hill-Sachs lesion, healed non-displaced proximal humerus fractures for >10 months following an electrical shock and fall

Anterior glenohumeral instability is the most frequent type of shoulder instability. This is often associated with labral and osseous lesions leading to recurrent instability. A detailed medical history, a physical examination and targeted diagnostic imaging are necessary to assess possible pathological soft tissue alterations as well as bony lesions of the humeral head and the glenoid bone. Early surgical treatment has been shown to reduce the risk of recurrence, especially in young active athletes, and can avoid secondary damage. Shoulder dislocations in older patients also require a detaile

COMFORTABLE JOINT ANGLES (CJA), ANTHROPOMETRICS, RANGE OF MOTION (ROM) AND SEX ARE CRUCIAL FOR OPTIMISING BICYCLE DESIGNS TO ENHANCE PERFORMANCE AND PREVENT INJURIES. PREVIOUS STUDIES HAVE NOT COMPREHENSIVELY PROVIDED RELATED DATA, MOTIVATING THE CURRENT STUDY TO ADDRESS THREE QUESTIONS: (1) What is the CJA hip and shoulder abduction/adduction (ADD-ABD) for cyclists? (2) How do these measurements vary according to sex and stature? (3) What are the correlations among bicycle variables, anthropometrics, ROM and CJA of the hip and shoulder ADD-ABDs? Data were collected from 12 participants using

BACKGROUND: Neurologic lesions are relatively common after total shoulder arthroplasty. These injuries are mostly due to traction. We aimed to identify the arm manipulations and steps during reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (RTSA) that affect nerve stress.
METHODS: Stress was measured in 10 shoulders of 5 cadavers by use of a tensiometer on each nerve from the brachial plexus, with shoulders in different arm positions and during different surgical steps of RTSA.
RESULTS: When we studied shoulder position without prostheses, relative to the neutral position, internal rotation increased str

Little is known regarding the incidence of the shoulder instability in Japan. The aim of this study was to evaluate the incidence of traumatic shoulder instability among Japanese military cadets. A prospective cohort study was performed to capture all traumatic shoulder instability events between 2009 and 2012 among cadets in a military educational academy of the Japan Self Defense Forces. The total number of cadets in the cohort was 5,402 (average age 20.6 years). The incidence of instability events, including dislocation or subluxation, was calculated. Chronicity, demographics of participant

A critical review is presented of the indications for nerve repair or transfer and for palliative operations in the management of paralytic shoulder following traumatic neurological injuries in the adult. Different situations are considered: paralytic shoulder following supraclavicular lesions of the brachial plexus, following retro- and infraclavicular lesions and following lesions to the terminal branches of the plexus (axillary, suprascapular and musculocutaneous nerves) and finally problems related to lesions of the accessory nerve and the long thoracic nerve. I. Supraclavicular lesions of
