In general surgery patients, endometrioses can occur in the gastro-intestinal tract; they can also appear as cicatricial endometrioses or can be manifested as other, rare localisations of endometriosis tissue. In many cases it is not possible to arrive at a pre-operative diagnosis which is histologically established. Hence, treatment in endometriosis of the colon is surgical resection in order to delineate it against carcinoma and for the purpose of treating cicatricial stenosis which is usually associated with endometriosis. In cicatricial endometrioses and cysts in the inguinal region, diagn

The patient was a 54-year-old man who had undergone resection of the sigmoid colon for unresectable sigmoid colon cancer with multiple liver( H1), lymph node, and lung metastases at the previous hospital. Chemotherapy with 5-fuorouracil, Leucovorin, and oxaliplatin (mFOLFOX6) plus bevacizumab was initiated after surgery. The outcome was partial response. The patient was introduced to our hospital because he had relocated. Based on the findings of the patient's computed tomography( CT) and positron emission tomography( PET)-CT scans, we decided to perform radical resection. We performed partial

BACKGROUND/AIMS: The aim of this study was to establish whether, and to what extent, pre- and intraoperatively detected characteristics (demographic, anamnestic and laboratory data) and tumor characteristics can be used in the assessment of regional lymph node involvement in patients with colorectal carcinoma. The assessment also included the number of lymph nodes involved in patients with positive lymph nodes. Considering that the number of obtained lymph nodes widely varies in resected specimens, assessment parameters also included the percentage of the involved lymph nodes within the total

Four years after mastectomy for a scirrhous carcinoma a 71-year-old woman developed diarrhoea. Crohn's disease was suspected. At endoscopy a stenosis of the sigmoid colon was found which could not be passed: the mucosa was normal looking. Gastrointestinal radiography revealed segmental subtotal stenoses of the colon with linitis plastica, typical for tumour-caused infiltration, as well as indentations in the small intestine by mesenteric metastases. The diagnosis was confirmed by computed tomography and, finally, operation. Chemotherapy failed to produce any regression of the colon stenoses, a

Thirteen patients with advanced carcinoma of the lower colon and no evidence of extrapelvic metastasis were submitted to total pelvic exenteration. Nine of the 13 patients had ureteral urinary diversion by the ileal segment conduit. Three had colonic conduit bladder using the terminal portion of the descending colon. One patient had bilateral uretero colonic anastomosis. The operative mortality rate was 7.7%. Determinate 5-year survival rate of 38.5% was achieved. Histological examinations of the surgical specimen revealed associated abscesses adjacent to the tumor in six cases, although the c

BACKGROUND AND METHODS: Surveillance by repeated colonoscopy is currently recommended for patients with colorectal adenomas. We assessed the long-term risk of colorectal cancer after rigid-instrument sigmoidoscopy and polypectomy in 1618 patients with rectosigmoid adenomas (tumor of the rectum or distal sigmoid colon) who did not undergo surveillance. A total of 22,462 person-years of observation were accrued (mean, 14 years per patient).
RESULTS: The incidence of subsequent rectal cancer in these patients was similar to that in the general population (standardized incidence ratio, 1.2; 95 pe

BACKGROUND: In recent years, only a few cases of mucinous adenocarcinoma with signet-ring cell carcinoma (MAC-SRC) have been reported, and detailed endoscopic imaging features remain poorly characterized. This is likely because these tumors are often already at an advanced stage at diagnosis, rendering endoscopic examination infeasible. We herein report a young Asian male diagnosed with sigmoid colon MAC-SRC (60% mucinous adenocarcinoma, 40% signet-ring cell carcinoma).
CASE PRESENTATION: A 27-year-old male presented with recurrent vomiting for 20 days. Abdominal computed tomography showed ma

PURPOSE: Sigmoid resection for diverticular disease is a frequent surgical procedure in the Western world. However, long-term bowel function after sigmoid resection has been poorly described in the literature. This study aims to assess the long-term bowel function after tubular sigmoid resection with preservation of inferior mesenteric artery (IMA) for diverticular disease.
METHODS: We retrospectively identified patients who underwent sigmoid resection for diverticular disease between 2002 and 2012 at a tertiary referral center in northern Germany. Using well-validated questionnaires, bowel f

RATIONALE: Primary lymphoma that arises from the intestine is an uncommon malignant tumour, while intestinal fistula caused by primary lymphoma is even rarer. Non-specific clinical performance makes early diagnosis difficult, although imaging modalities might play an essential role in the detection of intestinal fistula.
PATIENT CONCERNS: Patient 1: A 60-year-old male hospitalized with diarrhoea and abdominal pain for seven months underwent computed tomography enterography (CTE) that demonstrated ileum internal fistula and ileac-sigmoid colon fistula. Ultrasound (US) showed small intestinal w

BACKGROUND: Endoluminal vacuum-assisted therapy (EVT) has been introduced recently to treat colorectal anastomotic leakage. The aim of this study was to evaluate the safety and efficacy of EVT in the treatment of anastomotic leakage and rectal stump insufficiency after Hartmann's procedure.
METHODS: A systematic search of MEDLINE, Scopus and Cochrane databases was performed using search terms related to EVT and anastomotic leakage or rectal stump insufficiency in line with the PRISMA checklist. Observational studies, RCTs and case series studies published to July 2017 were included. Primary o

BACKGROUND: The purpose of the study was to evaluate the safety and effects of single-incision laparoscopic anterior resection (SILAR) for sigmoid colon cancer by comparing it with conventional laparoscopic anterior resection (CLAR).
METHODS: Twenty-four patients who underwent SILAR between April 2010 and July 2011 were case matched 1:2 with patients who underwent CLAR, with respect to age, sex, body mass index, tumor location, and history of abdominal surgery.
RESULTS: Two patients in the SILAR group and 1 patient in the CLAR group experienced anastomotic leakage. The operative time was lon

We report a case of sigmoid colon resection by single-incision laparoscopic surgery using transvaginal access. The patient was a 54-year-old woman with early stage sigmoid cancer who had no previous surgery and had a body mass index of 23.5 kg/m(2). The operative time was 270 min, and the blood loss was negligible. We used only transvaginal access, since no transabdominal assistance was required. No complications occurred. Minimal postoperative pain and a rapid recovery of gastrointestinal function were observed. As novel equipment is introduced into clinical practice, transvaginal laparoscopi

OBJECTIVE: Several minimally invasive techniques using natural orifices as an entrance site to the peritoneal cavity have been described recently. Pure natural orifice translumenal endoscopic surgery (NOTES) techniques have been mainly implemented to perform cholecystectomies and appendectomies, while more complex operations like colon resections have been described in a hybrid setting and with the use of the transumbilical approach. Here we describe the technique of transvaginal sigmoid colon resection for cancer with standard laparoscopy equipment.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: After developing th

This study aimed to describe an unusual case of metachronous isolated inguinal lymph nodes metastasis from sigmoid carcinoma. A 62-year-old man was referred to our department because of an obstructing sigmoid carcinoma. Colonoscopy showed the obstructing lesion at 30 cm from the anal verge and abdominal CT revealed a sigmoid lesion infiltrating the left lateral abdominal wall. The patient underwent a colonic resection extended to the abdominal wall. Histology showed an adenocarcinoma of the colon infiltrating the abdominal wall with iuxtacolic nodal involvement. Thirty three months after surge

An 81-year-old woman with adenocarcinoma of the rectosigmoid presented with progressive muscle weakness and difficulty swallowing, with symptoms worsening following successful resection of the tumor. On examination, she had weakness primarily of lower limb proximal muscles, with no other abnormal findings. Laboratory tests showed significant elevation of creatine kinase, and EMG findings indicated myositis of the proximal muscles. While MRI showed increased signal intensity on T2-weighted images of the leg muscles, indicating inflammation, muscle biopsy found widespread necrosis with only weak

The authors have analyzed results of the Hartmann operation performed in 119 patients with malignant obturative obstruction of the left half of the colon at hospitals of general profile. A local relapse of cancer was found in 18 (15.1%) of patients, mean time between the primary and restorative operations was 7.4 months. The results of treatment were analyzed in 62 patients in whom the strategy of treatment of malignant colonic obstruction was used with the formation of the decompressive colostomy at the first stage, and radical extraction of the tumor with simultaneous removal of the stoma at
