Accurate delineation, diagnosis, and treatment planning of skull base lesions require knowledge of the complex anatomy of the skull base. Because the skull base cannot be directly evaluated, imaging is critical for the diagnosis and management of skull base diseases. Although computed tomography (CT) is excellent for outlining the bony detail, magnetic resonance (MR) imaging provides better soft tissue detail and is helpful for evaluating the adjacent meninges, brain parenchyma, and bone marrow of the skull base. Thus, CT and MR imaging are often used together for evaluating skull base lesions

Neurofibromas are derived from the nerve sheath and are commonly located in the head and neck region. They usually occur between the ages of 30 and 50 years. Neurofibromas arising from the infratemporal fossa are quite rare, especially in children. We describe a solitary neurofibroma arising from the infratemporal fossa in an 8-year-old boy who presented with a painless mass in his right cheek. Computed tomographic scan showed a soft-density, not well-circumscribed mass located in the right infratemporal fossa. The tumor was resected via the transmandibular approach with an excellent outcome.

An 11-year-old, male, Pekinese was examined because of a sporadic, nonresponsive, nonproductive cough. Radiographically there was cardiomegaly and a soft tissue mass in the cranial mediastinum. Echocardiographically, chronic degenerative valvular disease was diagnosed. Furthermore, a large anechoic structure located cranial to the right atrium was detected. Computed tomography was performed to define the mediastinal mass and a right auricle aneurysm was diagnosed. The dog died suddenly 1 day after the diagnostic imaging procedures. At necropsy, a right auricular aneurysm without discontinuity

A 48-year-old man who had received a bioresorbable plate fixation for a zygomatic bone fracture 13 months earlier visited our clinic complaining of sudden facial swelling. The facial computed tomographic scan showed the soft tissue swelling without any bony abnormality, and the symptoms did not improve after 1 week of antibacterial therapy. The patient had a diagnosis of a late infection caused by unresorbed plates, and exploratory surgery was performed. Partially resorbed plates and screws were seen, and we removed the remnants of such completely. The symptoms were relieved after the operatio

A 54-year-old male presented with massive hematuria with bladder tamponade. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging showed a 7.5 x 6.5 x 4.5 cm. mass centered in the left renal pelvis, which is composed of macroscopic fat and soft-tissue component. Differential diagnosis included liposarcoma, lipoma and angiomyolipoma. Urothelial carcinoma was also undeniable because urine cytology was equivocal. Subsequently, a left nephroureterectomy was performed. Pathological examinations revealed a renal angiomyolipoma protruding into the renal pelvis. We present a rare case of angiomyolipoma i

An 18-year-old man was admitted with easy fatigue and muscle weakness. A diagnosis of myasthenia gravis was made. Chest X-ray showed no mediastinal abnormality, however, chest computed tomography (CT) showed a soft tissue mass in the thymus. The patient underwent extended thymectomy and small tumor (2 x 2 x 2 cm) was resected. On histological examination the tumor proved to be a thymolipoma composed of mature adipose elements containing cords and nests of thymic tissue. Symptoms of myasthenia gravis were dramatically improved after the operation. This case is the 12th in the world literature i

The patient was a 49-year-old male with the chief complaint of right lower extremity edema. Ultrasonography showed a right hydronephrosis and a thickening of the right side of bladder wall. No bladder tumor was found by cystoscopy. The right renal pelvis and ureter were not visualized by drip infusion pyelography (DIP). Computed tomography (CT) demonstrated a soft tissue mass surrounding the bilateral common iliac artery and extending to thickened bladder wall. After the echo-guided needle biopsy, steroid therapy was performed under the diagnosis of the idiopathic retroperitoneal fibrosis. Pre

PURPOSE: To report a case of small cell carcinoma of the thymus metastatic to the orbit.
METHODS: At age 37 years, a man who had been previously diagnosed and treated for small cell carcinoma of the thymus was initially examined for vertical diplopia and left proptosis. Computed tomographic scan disclosed a soft tissue mass in the superior aspect of the left orbit. A fine-needle aspiration biopsy of the mass was performed and submitted for cytopathologic examination.
RESULT: The cytopathology and immunopathology disclosed malignant cells consistent with metastatic small cell thymic carcinoma

A baby with unilateral cleft lip, midline cleft palate and hypertelorism developed meningitis in the first 48 h of life. Examination of the nasopharynx showed a soft tissue mass, which was confirmed as a basal encephalocele by computed tomography. There was also congenital hydrocephalus and the corpus callosum was absent. Surgical treatment included repair of the anterior basal skull defect, repair of the lip and palate, and ventriculo-peritoneal shunt. There is currently evidence of developmental delay and right-sided visual impairment due to Morning Glory syndrome. This case demonstrates tha

A cervical chordoma, confirmed at surgery, presented on plain spine films as a focal enlargement of the intervertebral foramen and mimicked the characteristic appearance of cervical neurofibroma. Computed tomography (CT) of the cervical spine was obtained immediately following metrizamide myelography; it demonstrated a soft-tissue mass in the enlarged intervertebral foramen that extended posteriorly to compress the spinal cord and anteriorly to compress the hypopharynx. The mass was sharply demarcated, inhomogeneous, and low in attenuation; CT density measured between those of cerebrospinal fl

Orbital pseudotumor is believed to be a nonspecific, acute or chronic inflammatory process involving the intraorbital soft tissue. Orbital pseudotumor may masquerade as sinusitis with orbital complications or as a severe upper respiratory tract infection. Five cases are presented to illustrate the difficulties in diagnosis when initial symptoms relate to the upper respiratory system rather than to an isolated orbital mass. In these cases, orbital ultrasound and computed tomograms were helpful in making the diagnosis. Treatment consisted of systemic corticosteroids in four of the five patients.

INTRODUCTION: Dental-dedicated magnetic resonance imaging (ddMRI) offers hard and soft tissue visualization and inflammatory condition assessment without ionizing radiation. This study evaluated the feasibility of a shortened ddMRI acquisition protocol for general dentomaxillofacial assessment (GDA) and apical periodontitis (AP).
METHODS: Two diagnostic tasks were investigated: GDA and AP screening (APS). Ten healthy volunteers were assessed for GDA. Ten other patients presenting clinical signs and/or symptoms of AP and requiring cone-beam computed tomography for diagnosis or treatment planni

BACKGROUND: Monte Carlo (MC) simulations or measurements in anthropomorphic phantoms are recommended for estimating fetal dose in pregnant patients in radiotherapy. Among the many existing phantoms, there is no commercially available physical phantom representing the entire pregnant woman.
PURPOSE: In this study, the development of a low-cost, physical pregnant female phantom was demonstrated using commercially available materials. This phantom is based on the previously published computational phantom.
METHODS: Three tissue substitution materials (soft tissue, lung and bone tissue substitut

Bicortical drilling of the clavicle is associated with risk of iatrogenic damage from plunging given the close proximity of neurovascular structures. This study determined plunge depth during superior-to-inferior clavicle drilling using a standard drill vs drill-sensing technology. Two orthopedic surgeons drilled 10 holes in a fresh cadaveric clavicle with drill-sensing technology in freehand mode (functions as standard orthopedic drill) and another 10 holes with drill-sensing technology in bicortical mode (drill motor stops when the second cortex is breached and depth is measured in real time

BACKGROUND: Tumor embolisms (TE) are an underappreciated source of pulmonary embolisms in sarcoma. Most evidence in the literature is limited to case reports and none have described the presence of TE secondary to myxofibrosarcoma. We report the first case of myxofibrosarcoma TE and perform a review of the literature for TE secondary to bone and soft tissue sarcomas (STS).

BACKGROUND: The proximal femuris is an uncommon site of osteosarcoma. The unusual manifestations at this site may lead to diagnostic and therapeutic mistakes. We therefore performed a retrospective study to estimate the proportions of patients with imaging study findings and/or clinical manifestations typical for osteosarcoma and/or inappropriate treatment decisions.
HYPOTHESIS: Proximal femoral osteosarcoma often produces atypical clinical and radiological presentations.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Consecutive patients who underwent surgery at our center to treat proximal femoral osteosarcoma wer

Sitting-acquired pressure ulcers (PUs) are a potentially life-endangering complication for wheelchair users who are obese and have diabetes mellitus. The increased body weight and diabetes-related alterations in weight-bearing tissue properties have been identified in the literature to increase the risk for PUs and deep tissue injuries (DTIs). A computer modeling study was conducted to evaluate the biomechanical effect of an air cell-based (ACB) cushion on tissues with increased fat mass and diabetes, which causes altered stiffness properties in connective tissues with respect to healthy tissu
