Effect of tilting on cerebral haemodynamics in preterm infants with periventricular leucencephalomalacia.

AIM: Measurement of cerebral haemodynamics to detect impaired cerebral blood flow and impaired cerebral autoregulation might make prevention of brain lesions and especially periventricular leucencephalomalacia (PVL) achievable. METHODS: Changes in cerebral blood volume (CBV) and the cerebral haemoglobin oxygenation index (cHbD) following tilting up and down in 10 preterm infants with PVL and 25 preterm infants without PVL, measured by near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS), were analysed. Tilting manoeuvres were recorded with a polysomnographic system in combination with NIRS. CBV and cHbD of the

Impact of bradycardia on cerebral oxygenation and cerebral blood volume during apnoea in preterm infants.

Apnoea in prematurity is a common problem in neonatology; and it is the impaired oxygen delivery during apnoea, which can harm the brain. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of bradycardia (below 80 beats min(-1)) on 'cerebral haemoglobin oxygenation index' (cHbD) and cerebral blood volume (CBV) during apnoea in stable preterm infants measured by means of near infrared spectroscopy. Twenty-six episodes of mixed and central apnoea with bradycardia (bradycardia group) in 20 preterm infants were compared to 26 episodes of mixed and central apnoea without bradycardia (non-bradycardia

Lumbar erector spinae oxygenation during prolonged contractions: implications for prolonged work.

Owing to the recent interest in torso stabilization exercises together with many questions regarding the duration of prolonged isometric holds in occupational settings, the authors attempted to assess the level of back muscle oxygenation during prolonged isometric contractions. Specifically, this study recorded relative oxygen saturation of haemoglobin/myoglobin using Near Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) in the L3 erector mass during prolonged isometric contractions at intensities from 2 to 30% of maximum voluntary contraction (MVC). It was hypothesized that available oxygen to these muscles is s

Quantitative measurement of oxygen consumption and forearm blood flow in patients with mitochondrial myopathies.

Five patients with chronic progressive external ophthalmoplegia (CPEO) and 27 healthy controls were examined by near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) for the non-invasive and direct quantitative measurement of muscle oxygen consumption during rest as well as during static isometric handgrip exercise at 10% of their maximum voluntary contraction. In patients with CPEO, we found a significantly decreased oxygen consumption during exercise, but more remarkably already during rest. Our results suggest that NIRS is able to discriminate between CPEO patients and healthy controls, which makes NIRS a prom

Probing Phonon Polaritons via Electron Microscopy: A Review.

Phonon polaritons (PhPs) are hybrid excitations arising from the coupling of optical phonons and electromagnetic waves, providing a versatile platform for exploring strong light-matter interaction studies and engineering the infrared response of polar materials. Their capability to confine and manipulate light well below the diffraction limit, combined with low losses, has enabled breakthroughs in subwavelength waveguiding, hyperlensing, infrared imaging, and molecular sensing. While far-field spectroscopy and scanning near-field optical microscopy have been widely used to characterize PhPs, t

Lipid Burden and Efficacy of Preventive PCI of Vulnerable Atherosclerotic Coronary Plaques: Post Hoc Analysis From the PREVENT Trial.

BACKGROUND: Preventive percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) of non-flow-limiting lesions (fractional flow reserve >0.80) that are high-risk plaques has emerged as a potential strategy to reduce cardiac events. However, identifying which lesions derive the greatest benefit from preventive PCI compared with optimal medical therapy alone remains challenging. This post hoc analysis evaluates the role of the near-infrared spectroscopy-derived lipid core burden index in identifying high-risk plaques that may benefit from preventive PCI. METHODS: Among the 1606 patients enrolled in the PREVENT t

Ultra-broadband infrared pump-probe spectroscopy using synchrotron radiation and a tuneable pump.

Synchrotron infrared sources have become popular mainly because of their excellent broadband brilliance, which enables spectroscopically resolved spatial-mapping of stationary objects at the diffraction limit. In this article we focus on an often-neglected further advantage of such sources - their unique time-structure - to bring such broadband spectroscopy to the time domain, for studying dynamic phenomenon down to the 100 ps limit. We describe the ultra-broadband (12.5 to 1.1 μm) Fourier transform pump-probe setup, for condensed matter transmission- and reflection-spectroscopy, installed at

Trends in vibrational spectroscopy on optical waveguides.

Vibrational spectroscopy, due to its inherent specificity in providing a spectral "fingerprint" of molecular composition, is an important tool to identify and quantify molecules in environmental, clinical, biotechnological, security, and manufacturing process applications, for example. Optical waveguide chips, offering mass production, robustness, sensitivity and the potential for widespread, low-cost deployment as sensors, are being exploited in two principal forms of vibrational spectroscopy, waveguide mid-infrared spectroscopy (WMIRS) and waveguide-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (WERS). For bo

Multiplexed detection of xylene and trichloroethylene in water by photonic crystal absorption spectroscopy.

We experimentally demonstrate simultaneous selective detection of xylene and trichloroethylene (TCE) using multiplexed photonic crystal waveguides (PCWs) by near-infrared optical absorption spectroscopy on a chip. Based on the slow light effect of photonic crystal structure, the sensitivity of our device is enhanced to 1 ppb (v/v) for xylene and 10 ppb (v/v) for TCE in water. Multiplexing is enabled by multimode interference power splitters and Y-combiners that integrate multiple PCWs on a silicon chip in a silicon-on-insulator platform.

Influence of galantamine on vasomotor reactivity in Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia due to cerebral microangiopathy.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Recent reports suggest that vascular factors play a crucial role in the development and progression of Alzheimer's disease. We aimed to assess vasomotor reactivity in patients with Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia due to microangiopathy using transcranial Doppler sonography and near-infrared spectroscopy during a CO(2) exposition task. METHODS: The normalized CO(2) reactivity assessed at the middle cerebral artery and the oxygenated and deoxygenated hemoglobin of the frontal cortex were obtained. Multimodality Diagnosis of Mesenteric Ischemia.

Early diagnosis of mesenteric ischemia remains challenging because mesenteric ischemia presents with no key symptoms or physical findings, and no laboratory data specifically indicates intestinal tissue ischemic status before necrosis develops. While computed tomography is the standard for diagnostic imaging, there are several limitations: (1) repeated assessments are associated with increased radiation exposure and risk of renal damage; (2) the computed tomography findings can be misleading because necrosis occasionally occurs despite opacified mesenteric arteries; and (3) computed tomography

Safety assessment of near infrared light emitting diodes for diffuse optical measurements.

BACKGROUND: Near infrared (NIR) light has been used widely to monitor important hemodynamic parameters in tissue non-invasively. Pulse oximetry, near infrared spectroscopy, and diffuse optical tomography are examples of such NIR light-based applications. These and other similar applications employ either lasers or light emitting diodes (LED) as the source of the NIR light. Although the hazards of laser sources have been addressed in regulations, the risk of LED sources in such applications is still unknown. METHODS: Temperature increase of the human skin caused by near infrared LED has been m

A dual stage wavelet workflow for motion artifact localization and correction in reflected light fNIRS signals.

Motion artifacts in functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) signals can distort reflected light waveforms and affect derived physiological estimates. This study presents a dual stage, joint ROI guided wavelet workflow for motion artifact localization and correction in reflected light fNIRS signals from the PhysioNet databaseMotion Artifact Contaminated fNIRS and EEG Data. The method combines continuous wavelet transform based joint ROI detection across the 690 and 830 nm signals with local dual threshold discrete wavelet correction and smooth boundary blending. Optimizing exercise for brain health: cortical activation and connectivity across different exercise modalities.

Exercise is a cost-effective, low-risk strategy with significant health benefits, including improved brain function and cognitive abilities. The study aims to investigate the impact of different exercise modalities and performance on brain function, with the fNIRS method being used to assess cortical activation and connectivity in brain regions of healthy adults. We used fNIRS to measure the effects of six types of exercise—level walking, weighted walking, going up and down slopes (GSL), going up and down stairs (GST), running, and jumping jack—on brain regions related to motor and cognitive f

An object-based framework for identifying moldy corn using hyperspectral images.

Hyperspectral imaging (HSI), leveraging its non-destructive and rapid detection capabilities, has become a pivotal technology for mold detection of corn and other grains. Currently, prevalent methodologies for grain mold detection are broadly classified into pixel-based (PB) and kernel-based (KB) methods, but both have inherent limitations. PB methods depend only on spectral data for mold identification, ignoring spatial features and causing misclassifications of substances with similar spectra. KB methods extract overall kernel features to detect mold but overlook fine-grained corn characteri

Functional specialisation across the first five years of life: A longitudinal characterisation of social perception with fNIRS.

Research in typically developing infants has shown robust and consistent brain activation to social versus non-social visual and auditory stimuli in a network of brain regions, including the inferior frontal, anterior temporal, and posterior superior temporal cortex. However, large-scale, longitudinal neuroimaging studies across early childhood, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, are rare, yet important, given that they offer a powerful means of capturing within-person changes in neurodevelopment and identifying targets for intervention and support. Here, we investigated brain r

Decoding functional changes in the brain following ischemic stroke: a multimodal feature approach integrating fNIRS with machine learning and deep learning.

BACKGROUND: Ischemic stroke (IS) induces significant structural and functional remodelling of brain networks. While functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) offers high temporal resolution for monitoring cerebral hemodynamics, its potential for capturing complex dysfunction patterns remains underutilized. This study investigated task-evoked and resting-state fNIRS responses to decode neurovascular deficits in IS patients compared to normal controls (NCs). METHODS: A total of 160 participants (115 IS patients and 45 NCs) were enrolled and underwent fNIRS recording across three paradigms:
