Chronic Strongyloides stercoralis infection in Fijian migrants to the UK.

Introduction. Strongyloides stercoralis, the human threadworm, is a parasitic nematode with global distribution, estimated to infect over 600 million people. Chronic infection is often asymptomatic, but hyperinfection and dissemination syndromes can occur in the immunosuppressed with high case fatality rates. Whilst strongyloidiasis is endemic in Fiji, its prevalence in Fijian migrant groups in the UK is unknown.Gap Statement. No previous studies have been conducted on the prevalence of Strongyloides and other gastrointestinal parasites (GIPs) in Fijian migrants to the UK.Aim. We conducted a c…

Human Strongyloides stercoralis infection.

Strongyloides stercoralis is an important soil-transmitted helminth occurring world-wide and affecting 30-100 million people. Because many cases are asymptomatic and sensitive diagnostic methods are lacking, S. stercoralis infection is frequently underdiagnosed. The increasing incidence of autoimmune and wasting diseases and increased use of immunosuppressive agents, as well as the increased use of immunosuppressants and cytotoxic drugs, have increased S. stercoralis infection and their mortality. This review provides information about S. stercoralis epidemiology, life cycle, aetiology, pathol

Optimizing moxidectin dosing for Strongyloides stercoralis infections: Insights from pharmacometric modeling.

Moxidectin is a frontrunner drug candidate in the treatment of strongyloidiasis. A dose of 8 mg is recommended to treat this indication, which shows a reasonably good efficacy and tolerability profile. Yet, owing to the unique life cycle of Strongyloides stercoralis (S. stercoralis) that entails internal autoinfection, a curative treatment would be desirable. Population-based pharmacometric modeling that would help to identify an ideal dosing strategy are yet lacking. The aims of this study were to (i) explore the exposure-efficacy response relationship of moxidectin in treating S. stercoralis…

Strongyloides myopotami (Secernentea: Strongyloididae) from the intestine of feral nutrias (Myocastor coypus) in Korea.

Surveys on helminthic fauna of the nutria, Myocastor coypus, have seldom been performed in the Republic of Korea. In the present study, we describe Strongyloides myopotami (Secernentea: Strongyloididae) recovered from the small intestine of feral nutrias. Total 10 adult nutrias were captured in a wetland area in Gimhae-si (City), Gyeongsangnam-do (Province) in April 2013. They were transported to our laboratory, euthanized with ether, and necropsied. About 1,300 nematode specimens were recovered from 10 nutrias, and some of them were morphologically observed by light and scanning electron micr

Verminous myelitis in a pit bull puppy.

A 10-week-old, male pit bull dog presented to the referring veterinarian with hind limb paresis and epaxial muscle atrophy. No spinal lesions were identified at gross necropsy; however, histologically there was marked granulomatous myelitis in the spinal cord between T13 and L2 with occasional, intralesional nematode larvae. Based on morphologic characteristics, the nematode larvae were identified as Strongyloides spp., possibly Strongyloides stercoralis.

[Organ changes in experimental strongyloidosis of rabbits provoked by Strongyloides papillosus].

Strongyloidosis was induced by percutaneous injection of rabbits; then organ changes were tested. It has been found that Strongyloides papillosus evoked changes in intestine, liver, kidney and lung. No notable changes were found in heart, spleen and suprarenal gland. These changes may be provoked not only directly by the presence of these parasites but also by the products of metabolism of S. papillosus.

[Strongyloides stercoralis hyperinfection with encephalitis manifestations].

A case of encephalitis in a 34 year old woman from Ivory Coast, referred to the Santo Spirito Hospital in Rome, is reported. During a coma which appeared terminal, a bronchoaspirate done for suspicious pulmonary TB, revealed many filariform larvae of Strongyloides stercoralis. A treatment with albendazole has rapidly ameliorated the situation but a relapse after 4 months caused the obitus of the patient.

Parasitic arthritis induced by Strongyloides stercoralis.

A 40-year-old man presented with palpable purpura and symmetrical polyarticular arthritis. Histological examination of the synovial membrane and fluid unexpectedly disclosed Strongyloides stercoralis infestation of the ankle joint.
