Immunoreactivity for Sox10 in Basaloid Neoplasms of The Skin.

Basaloid tumors of the skin pose a diagnostic challenge to pathologists, because the differential diagnosis is broad, sometimes with subtle differentiating features. We evaluated SOX10 expression in 120 primary cutaneous tumors with epidermal, sweat glandular, neuroendocrine/neuroectodermal, follicular, and sebaceous lineages. Our findings were compared with those of previous studies that evaluated SOX10 in tumors of the skin. SOX10 staining was seen in the majority of sweat gland tumors with the exception of syringoma and microcystic adnexal carcinoma. There were no immunoreactive cases among…

Female child with hematidrosis of the palm: Case report and published work review.

Hematidrosis is a rare disorder involving spontaneous excretion of sweat contaminated by blood cells. We report the case of a 6-year-old girl with hematidrosis from her palms with no underlying disease or psychotic disorder. Before the onset of this symptom, the patient was given an indoor horizontal exercise bar with which she had been frequently playing. This symptom appeared without apparent triggers and was not associated with subjective symptoms. To examine her hematidrosis, metabolites in the red bodily fluid were analyzed using nuclear magnetic resonance analysis. We found the fluid had…

Gastroesophageal Variceal Bleeding as a Complication of Cystic Fibrosis in a 3-Month-Old Patient.

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a hereditary disease of mucous and sweat glands, which affects the respiratory and gastrointestinal systems. Herein, we describe a 3-month-old girl with a history of recurrent episodes of urinary tract infections that required hospitalization. She was referred to our center at the age of three months, with massive gastroesophageal variceal bleeding. In physical examination, she had clubbing, hepatosplenomegaly, and mild ascites. Laboratory studies revealed high serum levels of liver enzymes and low level of Albumin. As of suspicious to CF, sweat tests were performed twi…

Axillary chromhidrosis: report of a case, review of the literature and treatment considerations.

Chromhidrosis is a rare but troubling syndrome whose cardinal feature is the appearance of colored sweat. In some instances, this may be associated with the use of drugs or ingested materials [Dermatology vol. 199 (1999) 149-52] but in others it is idiopathic. Irrespective of the etiology, the appearance of colored sweat can be profoundly psychologically disturbing. We report the case of a woman who had been affected by chromhidrosis for several years. Treatment with botulinum toxin type A resulted in a cessation of the problem with profoundly improved quality of life for this individual. This…

Axillary osmidrosis in Apert syndrome: management with an arthroscopic shaver technique.

Apert syndrome is a congenital condition characterized by craniosynostosis, syndactyly, and maxillary hypoplasia. Previous authors have outlined the management of craniofacial and extremity anomalies associated with this syndrome; however, there is a paucity of literature regarding the treatment of the cutaneous manifestations of Apert syndrome. Axillary osmidrosis, a chronic skin condition characterized by an excessive, axillary malodor resulting from apocrine gland dysfunction, can be particularly severe in patients with Apert syndrome. Herein, we describe a pediatric patient with Apert synd

Antiseizure medication effects on the autonomic nervous system in pediatric patients with epilepsy.

Patients with epilepsy (PWE) taking antiseizure medications (ASMs) exhibit altered autonomic nervous system (ANS) parameters. ANS signals may monitor ASM applications and effectiveness non-invasively. Due to limited research, we reviewed the effects of ASMs on the pediatric ANS. We followed PRISMA guidelines and searched PubMed, Web of Science, and Embase for publications until 12/2024. These studies investigated the impact of ASMs on ANS, including heart rate (HR), heart rate variability (HRV), temperature, and sweat. We used Covidence software for screening processes and data extraction. Aft…

CFTR function is impaired in a subset of patients with pancreatitis carrying rare CFTR variants.

BACKGROUND: Many affected by pancreatitis harbor rare variants of the cystic fibrosis (CF) gene, CFTR, which encodes an epithelial chloride/bicarbonate channel. We investigated CFTR function and the effect of CFTR modulator drugs in pancreatitis patients carrying CFTR variants. METHODS: Next-generation sequencing was performed to identify CFTR variants. Sweat tests and nasal potential difference (NPD) assays were performed to assess CFTR function in vivo. Intestinal current measurement (ICM) was performed on rectal biopsies. Patient-derived intestinal epithelial monolayers were used to evalua…

Autonomic impairment in primary lateral sclerosis.

PURPOSE: Prior studies reported evidence of autonomic involvement in motor neuron disease and suggested more severe dysfunction in upper motor neuron predominant syndromes. Hence, we sought to characterize autonomic impairment in primary lateral sclerosis. METHODS: Neurological evaluations, thermoregulatory sweat tests, and autonomic reflex screens were analyzed retrospectively in 34 primary lateral sclerosis patients (28 definite and 6 probable). Patients with other potential causes of autonomic failure and patients with autonomic testing results compromised by artifact were excluded. RESUL…

A century of exercise physiology: concepts that ignited the study of human thermoregulation. Part 2: physiological measurements.

In this, the second of four historical reviews on human thermoregulation during exercise, we examine the research techniques developed by ou … 600s, but using mass losses to assess evaporation rates requires precise measures of non-evaporated sweat, which are rarely obtained. Hygrometric methods provide data for local sweat rates, but not local evaporation rates, and most local sweat rates cannot be extrapolated to reflect whole-body sweating. The objective of these methodological overviews an …

Treatment of hyperhidrosis with Botox (onabotulinumtoxinA): Development, insights, and impact.

Hyperhidrosis (chronic excessive sweating) may substantially affect an individual's emotional and social well-being. Therapies available before onabotulinumtoxinA were generally topical, with limited effectiveness, application-site skin reactions, and frequent, time-consuming treatments. Intradermal injection of onabotulinumtoxinA to treat sweat glands arose as a novel therapeutic approach. To develop this treatment, appropriate dosing needed to be established, and training on administration was required. Further, no previous scale existed to measure the effects of hyperhidrosis on patients' l…

Active cutaneous vasodilation in resting humans during mild heat stress.

The role of skin temperature in reflex control of the active cutaneous vasodilator system was examined in six subjects during mild graded heat stress imposed by perfusing water at 34, 36, 38, and 40 degrees C through a tube-lined garment. Skin sympathetic nerve activity (SSNA) was recorded from the peroneal nerve with microneurography. While monitoring esophageal, mean skin, and local skin temperatures, we recorded skin blood flow at bretylium-treated and untreated skin sites by using laser-Doppler velocimetry and local sweat rate by using capacitance hygrometry on the dorsal foot. Cutaneous v…

Hidradenoma papilliferum at vaginal vault - A rare cause of vault growth.

Hidradenoma papilliferum (HP) is a rare benign tumor of the apocrine gland and is commonly seen at the anogenital region. A 32-year-old post-hysterectomy woman presented with excessive vaginal discharge and itching. Small polypoidal mass was noted at vault. Excision of the lesion was done, and histopathology confirmed HP. The patient is symptom free following excision. This case report highlights the presence of pluripotent cells in the vagina and their differentiation into any cell lineage.
