Tick-borne relapsing fever Borreliosis, a major public health problem overlooked in Senegal.

BACKGROUND: Tick-borne relapsing fever (TBRF) is the most common vector-borne bacterial disease in humans in West Africa. It is frequently clinically confused with malaria. Our study aims to determine, on a micro-geographic scale, the conditions for the maintenance and spread of TBRF in the Niakhar district of Senegal. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We conducted clinical, entomological and animal reservoir investigations. Field surveys were carried out in order to investigate the presence of Ornithodoros sonrai vector ticks and to detect Borrelia spp. by qPCR using the 16S rRNA and glpQ gene

Molecular epidemiology, associated risk factors, and phylogenetic analysis of anaplasmosis in camel.

Camel Anaplasmosis is caused by members of family Anaplasmatacae, a tick transmitted, obligate intracellular bacteria. The etiological bacteria are transmitted by ixodid tick species. The species have multi host range distribution that is why it is crucial to diagnose it timely. The aim of present study was to investigate the molecular epidemiology i.e. prevalence and risk factors analysis of camel anaplasmosis. Furthermore, variations in hematological standards were also evaluated. The study found an overall 13.33% prevalence in camels. The confirmation of PCR positive samples for Anaplasma s

Clinical Theileriosis in an Endangered Malayan Tapir Diagnosed Using a Molecular Technique with Successful Treatment and Recovery.

A 12-year-old female captive Malayan tapir (Tapirus indicus) in Thailand presented with clinical signs including depression, anorexia, pale mucous membrane, dark-brown urine, dry feces, and tick infestation. Hematological analysis revealed severe anemia (packed cell volume, PCV = 9%), and blood smear examination suggested blood parasite infection, which was subsequently confirmed as Theileria orientalis using PCR targeting the 18S rRNA gene and sequencing. Treatment consisted of the administration of diminazene aceturate (2.5 mg/kg, IM, q14days for three doses), whole-blood transfusion, fluid

First molecular diagnosis of the human pathogen Rickettsia raoultii and other spotted fever group rickettsiae in Sudanese ixodid ticks from domestic ruminants.

BACKGROUND: Rickettsial infections are often neglected and poorly recognized by physicians in many tropical and subtropical regions. Despite a number of recent reports describing rickettsial diseases in new locations and the discovery of new rickettsiae, medical science and research have largely neglected the diagnosis and antimicrobial treatment of rickettsial infections in subtropical and tropical areas; thus, much remains to be discovered. This study aimed to detect and characterize spotted fever group (SFG) rickettsiae in ixodid ticks infesting domestic ruminants in Khartoum State. METHOD

Rickettsia parkeri and "Candidatus Rickettsia andeanae" in Amblyomma maculatum (Acari: Ixodidae) collected from the Atlanta metropolitan area, Georgia, United States.

Rickettsia parkeri is a recently recognized human pathogen transmitted in the southeastern United States by Amblyomma maculatum, the Gulf Coast tick. Since R. parkeri was conclusively identified as a human pathogen in 2004, over 40 cases of R. parkeri rickettsiosis have been identified in the United States, most of which occur in the southeastern states. During 2012-2014, five of these cases were identified by a single urgent care practice in Coweta County, a Georgia county within the Atlanta metropolitan area. To investigate the occurrence of R. parkeri-infected A. maculatum in the Atlanta me

What do we need to know about disease ecology to prevent Lyme disease in the northeastern United States?

Lyme disease is the most commonly reported vector-borne disease in the United States, with the majority of cases occurring in the Northeast. It has now been three decades since the etiological agent of the disease in North America, the spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi, and its primary North American vectors, the ticks Ixodes scapularis Say and I. pacificus Cooley & Kohls, were identified. Great strides have been made in our understanding of the ecology of the vectors and disease agent, and this knowledge has been used to design a wide range of prevention and control strategies. However, despite

One Health approach to identify research needs in bovine and human babesioses: workshop report.

BACKGROUND: Babesia are emerging health threats to humans and animals in the United States. A collaborative effort of multiple disciplines to attain optimal health for people, animals and our environment, otherwise known as the One Health concept, was taken during a research workshop held in April 2009 to identify gaps in scientific knowledge regarding babesioses. The impetus for this analysis was the increased risk for outbreaks of bovine babesiosis, also known as Texas cattle fever, associated with the re-infestation of the U.S. by cattle fever ticks. RESULTS: The involvement of wildlife in

Serological screening of Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) among Malaysian encephalitis patients.

Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) is a viral infection of the central nervous system and is caused by tick bites, usually after travel to rural or forested areas. The disease is prevalent in Scandinavia, Western Europe, Central Europe and the former Soviet Union and East Asia including Japan. In Malaysia, so far there are no reported cases of TBE. In the present time, many illnesses have been attributed to traveling to other parts of the world. Thus it is important to carry out TBE prevalence study to determine whether the virus is present among Malaysian population. Samples (sera and CSF) from pa

Sexual and transovarian transmission of Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever virus in Hyalomma truncatum ticks.

Male Hyalomma truncatum ticks were inoculated with Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever (CCHF) virus, hypostomectomized and then allowed to mate with uninfected females feeding on a naive rabbit. After mating, CCHF virus was reisolated from 2 out of 3 males tested and from 4 of 6 mated, engorged females (titre greater than or equal to 2.2 log LD50/ml). Vertical transmission was then demonstrated by virus reisolation from a portion of 2 of the 6 batches of eggs laid by the positive females. From these 2 positive egg batches, 6 larvae pools were tested with successful virus reisolation from one. Att

Canine Babesiosis Caused by Large Babesia Species: Global Prevalence and Risk Factors-A Review.

Canine babesiosis is a disease caused by protozoan pathogens belonging to the genus Babesia. Four species of large Babesia cause canine babesiosis (B. canis, B. rossi, B. vogeli, and the informally named B. coco). Although canine babesiosis has a worldwide distribution, different species occur in specific regions: B. rossi in sub-Saharan Africa, B. canis in Europe and Asia, and B. coco in the Eastern Atlantic United States, while B. vogeli occurs in Africa, southern parts of Europe and Asia, northern Australia, southern regions of North America, and in South America. B. vogeli is the most prev

Detection of IgM antibodies against Babesia bovis in cattle.

The diagnosis of acute babesiosis by direct examination of blood smears has some limitations and the indirect serological methods currently in use are designed for detection of IgG, which may not be detectable at an early stage of infection. There is a need, therefore, for rapid and reliable procedures to diagnose acute infections. An ELISA system using a crude antigenic preparation of Babesia bovis was standardized for the detection of IgM antibodies. Optimal dilutions of the antigen, using positive and negative reference sera, were determined by checkerboard titrations. Serum samples of catt

Haemaphysalis longicornis ticks are unable to transstadially transmit Theileria haneyi to horses.

INTRODUCTION: The recent discovery of Theileria haneyi, a tick-borne hemoparasite that causes mild clinical signs of equine piroplasmosis, has added complexity to the diagnosis of this reportable disease, which is prevalent among equids globally. Knowledge gaps regarding competent tick vectors that can transmit T. haneyi and the recent outbreak of Haemaphysalis longicornis in the US has prompted us to conduct this study. Our objective was to investigate whether H. longicornis can transstadially transmit T. haneyi to horses. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Haemaphysalis longicornis larvae (0.5 g) and n

Basophils and skin disorders.

Since their discovery in 1879, basophils have been viewed as circulating blood granulocytes with limited immune function. New research tools for their functional analysis in vivo have revealed previously unrecognized roles for basophils in several skin disorders. Human basophils infiltrate different skin lesions and have been implicated in the pathogenesis of diseases ranging from chronic idiopathic urticaria to systemic lupus erythematosus. In mouse models, basophils participate in IgE-mediated chronic allergic inflammation of the skin and have a protective role in tick infestation. In this r

Transmission of Babesia sp to sheep with field-collected Haemaphysalis qinghaiensis.

Haemaphysalis qinghaiensis ticks collected in the Gannan Tibet Autonomous Region were infested onto a sheep from a Babesia-free area. A strain of small Babesia (1.8-2.1 microm in length) was isolated from the sheep. Most of the Babesia in erythrocytes were round, oval, single pyriform, double pyriform, budding or elongated in form. Measurements were made of 100 single sides of the double-pyriform Babesia and compared with those for B. motasi and B. ovis from Holland, using Student's t-test. The Gannan small Babesia was similar to the B. ovis from Holland, but differed significantly from the Du

The comparison of spatial variation and risk factors between mosquito-borne and tick-borne diseases: Seroepidemiology of Ehrlichia canis, Anaplasma species, and Dirofilaria immitis in dogs.

Canine ehrlichiosis/anaplasmosis and heartworm diseases are vector-borne and zoonotic infections. To compare epidemiology of these vector-borne diseases, a community-based study was conducted to determine the seroprevalence and risk factors of Ehrlichia canis, Anaplasma sp. and Dirofilaria immitis infections among healthy pet dogs. Prevalence distribution patterns were geographically contrasting between tick-borne E. canis/Anaplasma sp. infections and mosquito-borne D. immitis infection. Although highly enzootic communities of ehrlichiosis/anaplasmosis scattered in mountainous environment at e
