A case of rare form of tuberculosis of the spine localized within arches and articular processes complicated by neurological deficits is presented. Diagnostic difficulties, surgical treatment and postoperative management resulting in complete resolution of the disease is described.

The number of cases of tuberculous bone or joint infection reported annually in the United States has been rising, but it decreased slightly in 1993. Management of skeletal tuberculosis is a complex and evolving issue that requires knowledge of the treatment of drug-resistant organisms. Nontuberculous mycobacteria also may cause skeletal infections, which are often located in tenosynovium or osteoarticular components of the hand or wrist but may occur at other skeletal sites, particularly when there is underlying immunosuppression. Identification of the organism and determination of its drug s

Four patients who developed tuberculous paraplegia during pregnancy are described. They delivered at term without complications and then underwent successful decompression for paraplegia.

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: Orthopedic tuberculosis is number one in non-pulmonary forms of tuberculosis and, among these, knee joint tuberculosis ranks second after spinal tuberculosis. Arthritic lesions are currently treated by total knee arthroplasty (TKA).
MATERIAL: A group of 10 patients who, after having gone through tuberculous gonarthritis, underwent TKA was evaluated for the period from 1980 to 2005. It consisted of six women and four men, whose average age at the time of arthroplasty was 65 years.
METHODS: The most frequent indication for TKA after tuberculous gonarthritis was post-infla

Tuberculosis (TB) remains a global health challenge. Although pulmonary TB is the most frequent presentation, extrapulmonary involvement can occur, especially in immunocompromised patients. HIV-positive individuals are particularly vulnerable to opportunistic infections, such as TB, and CNS involvement is more prevalent in these patients, often leading to a poorer prognosis. CNS TB management is challenging due to nonspecific symptoms and delayed diagnosis, contributing to high mortality. It can manifest diffusely as tuberculous meningitis (TBM), localized as tuberculoma or tuberculous abscess

BACKGROUND: Spinal tuberculosis (TB), or Pott's disease, is the most common form of osteoarticular TB. Early diagnosis and anti-TB drug therapy are the mainstays of treatment. However, in advanced stages, surgery is essential to correct spinal deformities and avoid neurological damage. Very few cases in young children requiring surgical treatment have been described. We present 2 cases of surgically treated thoracic spinal TB in patients under 2 years of age and review the literature on this entity in young children.
CASE DESCRIPTION: Two male toddlers, aged 21 (patient 1) and 23 (patient 2)

BACKGROUND: In the late stage of spinal tuberculosis, the bony destruction and vertebral collapse often leads to significant kyphosis, presenting clinically as a painful gibbus deformity, with increased instability, vertebral body translations and increased risk of neurologic involvement. Spinal osteotomy is thought to be suitable for most patients with severe rigid kyphosis. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of transpedicular bi-vertebrae osteotomy technique in the patients with Pott's kyphosis and other post-tubercular spinal deformity.
METHODS: Between January 2012 and Dec

Allogeneic bone marrow transplant recipients have severe impairment of cell-mediated immunity and hence a higher incidence of mycobacterial infections might be expected in regions where tuberculosis is common. We reviewed the case records of 217 patients who underwent allogeneic bone marrow transplantation during the period 1986-1999 at our center in India. Mycobacterial infections were diagnosed in three patients (1.38%). All patients presented with extrapulmonary disease. Two patients had disseminated tuberculosis with one of these being diagnosed on autopsy studies. The third patient had tu
