Service innovation in glaucoma management: using a Web-based electronic patient record to facilitate virtual specialist supervision of a shared care glaucoma programme.

AIM: To assess the importance of specialist supervision in a new model of glaucoma service delivery. METHODS: An optometrist supported by three technicians managed each glaucoma clinic. Patients underwent testing and clinical examination before the optometrist triaged them into one of five groups: 'normal', 'stable', 'low risk', 'unstable' and 'high risk'. Patient data were uploaded to an electronic medical record to facilitate virtual review by a glaucoma specialist. RESULTS: 24 257 glaucoma reviews at three glaucoma clinics during a 31-month period were analysed. The clinic optometrists an

The effect of body posture on long-range time-to-contact estimation.

On Earth, gravity accelerates freely moving objects downward, whereas upward-moving objects are being decelerated. Do humans take internalised knowledge of gravity into account when estimating time-to-contact (TTC, the time remaining before the moving object reaches the observer)? To answer this question, we created a motion-prediction task in which participants saw the initial part of an object's trajectory moving on a collision course prior to an occlusion. Observers had to judge when the object would make contact with them. The visual scene was presented with a head-mounted display. Partici

Walking and talking: dual-task effects on street crossing behavior in older adults.

The ability to perform multiple tasks simultaneously has become increasingly important as technologies such as cell phones and portable music players have become more common. In the current study, we examined dual-task costs in older and younger adults using a simulated street crossing task constructed in an immersive virtual environment with an integrated treadmill so that participants could walk as they would in the real world. Participants were asked to cross simulated streets of varying difficulty while either undistracted, listening to music, or conversing on a cell phone. Older adults we

Differential impact of partial cortical blindness on gaze strategies when sitting and walking - an immersive virtual reality study.

The present experiments aimed to characterize the visual performance of subjects with long-standing, unilateral cortical blindness when walking in a naturalistic, virtual environment. Under static, seated testing conditions, cortically blind subjects are known to exhibit compensatory eye movement strategies. However, they still complain of significant impairment in visual detection during navigation. To assess whether this is due to a change in compensatory eye movement strategy between sitting and walking, we measured eye and head movements in subjects asked to detect peripherally-presented,

Motor learning principles for rehabilitation: a pilot randomized controlled study in poststroke patients.

BACKGROUND: Six months after a stroke, the hemiplegic arm often remains compromised. More innovative approaches to motor rehabilitation are needed. OBJECTIVE: The authors compared a motor learning-based approach in a virtual environment with more conventional upper extremity therapy in a pilot trial. METHODS: This prospective, single-blinded, randomized controlled trial compared reinforced feedback in a virtual environment (RFVE; n = 27) with a control intervention (n = 20) of progressive therapy for the affected upper extremity. Both treatments were provided for 4 weeks, 5 days per week, wi

Developing Family Healthware, a family history screening tool to prevent common chronic diseases.

Family health history reflects the effects of genetic, environmental, and behavioral factors and is an important risk factor for a variety of disorders including coronary heart disease, cancer, and diabetes. In 2004, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention developed Family Healthware, a new interactive, Web-based tool that assesses familial risk for 6 diseases (coronary heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and colorectal, breast, and ovarian cancer) and provides a "prevention plan" with personalized recommendations for lifestyle changes and screening. The tool collects data on health behavi

Incidence based fetal urological counseling using the virtual pediatric urology registry: importance of insignificant fetal pyelectasis (sonographically evident renal pelvis).

PURPOSE: Since 1985, counseling for fetal renal pelvic dilatation has been done to determine whether there is need for newborn urological evaluation. This is likely if the anteroposterior width of the renal pelvis exceeds categorical cutoffs, ie 4 mm or greater before gestational age 33 weeks, or 7 mm or greater after 33 weeks. Cases below these categorical cutoffs are deemed not to merit newborn testing. We examined our fetal registry to determine the incidence of urological pathology in cases deemed not to merit newborn testing. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Since 1980, we have prospectively input

Documenting the efficacy of virtual reality exposure with psychophysiological and information processing measures.

Many outcome studies have been conducted to assess the efficacy of virtual reality in the treatment of specific phobias. However, most studies used self-report data. The addition of objective measures of arousal and information processing mechanisms would be a valuable contribution in order to validate the usefulness of virtual reality in the treatment of anxiety disorders. The goal of this study was to document the impact of virtual reality exposure (VRE) on cardiac response and automatic processing of threatening stimuli. Twenty-eight adults suffering from arachnophobia were assessed and rec

Orascopic endodontics: changing the way we "think" about endodontics in the 21st century.

Orascopic endodontics has helped bring visualization to what has literally been a "blind" specialty. The ease of operation and better operating ergonomics of fiber optic instrumentation has allowed the endodontist to identify and treat endodontic etiology more efficiently. The metamorphosis of understanding endodontics from an in vivo perspective is changing the way we "think" about the practice of endodontics. Prior to intracanal visualization, the cognitive process of determining when the canal was ready for obturation was merely an educated guess based on years of in vitro instrumentation r

Methods to modernize a multimedia, web-based reproductive health education intervention for individuals with sickle cell disease or trait using virtual human narration and user-centered design.

Objectives: For a population that lacks genetic inheritance knowledge about sickle cell disease/trait, a previously innovative web-based intervention showed significant and sustained knowledge improvement, but current users judged it as "dated." We aimed to modernize the reproductive health intervention, revitalizing its presentation format and providing access to it via all operating systems and browsers. Methods: Young adults (N = 82, mean age 30.3 ± 5.8 years, 76% female, 94% Black, 74% never married) and our interdisciplinary team collaborated in an iterative, user-centered redesign proces

A Complete Grocery Pick-and-Pack Application Using a Computationally Lightweight Vision-Based Mobile Manipulator.

Mobile manipulators have become essential platforms for autonomous tasks that demand high-quality performance and efficient operational processes. This paper presents a complete grocery pick-and-pack system for a mobile manipulator, integrating a graphical user interface (GUI) with an end-to-end vision-based grasp detection pipeline designed for lightweight computation. The system is evaluated on the Grocery Pick-and-Pack Benchmark (Level-3), the most challenging level due to deformable objects, dimensional constraints, and strict grasp-point requirements. Experimental results demonstrate an a

Mobile App Prototype in Older Adults for Postfracture Acute Pain Management: User-Centered Design Approach.

BACKGROUND: Postfracture acute pain is often inadequately managed in older adults. Mobile health (mHealth) technologies can offer opportunities for self-management of pain; however, insufficient apps exist for acute pain management after a fracture, and none are designed for an older adult population. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to design, develop, and evaluate an mHealth app prototype using a human-centered design approach to support older adults in the self-management of postfracture acute pain. METHODS: This study used a multidisciplinary and user-centered design approach. Overall, 7 stake

3-D analysis of dislocation in zygoma fractures.

OBJECTIVE: When fractured, zygomas rotate and dislocate. The present study quantitatively elucidates the pattern of the rotation. METHODS: 50 patients with tri-pod-type zygoma fractures were involved in this study. After defining a 3-dimensional coordinate system--consisting of the M-L axis (the axis directed from the medial to lateral side of the skull), I-S axis (directed from the inferior to superior side), and P-A axis (directed from the posterior to anterior side), the degree with which the fractured zygomas rotated around each of these axes was measured using 3-dimensional graphic softw

Development and demonstration of a novel computer planning solution for predefined correction of enophthalmos in anophthalmic patients using prebended 3D titanium-meshes--a technical note.

Ablative surgery of the orbit is often associated with dramatic changes in facial geometry. Surgical intervention is often necessary to correct the functional and esthetic appearance in those patients who are anophthalmic, having an intact eyelid appearance and an orbital prosthesis. The outcome of the surgical correction depends on the shape of the orbital implants and their adequate placement. In the case of comparatively small rearrangements, the effect of implants on soft tissues can be estimated by surgeons on the basis of their experience. However, large deformities in complex cases (inc

The future of dental and maxillofacial imaging.

Improvements in software removal of scatter artifacts; reduced x-ray dose; and delivery of interpretive reports, analyses, appliances, and images will continue, and use of cone beam volumetric tomography will increase. Distributive networks will be introduced to simplify all of these tasks. Virtual articulators, computer assisted design and computer assisted manufacturing devices will improve, and online delivery of some of these services will increase concomitantly. Consequently, dentistry will improve and, along with it, patient care.

Near Real-Time Quantitative Ultrasound Imaging Using an Ultra-Portable Handheld Ultrasound System.

Clinical ultrasound is widely used because of its low cost, portability, safety, and real-time imaging capability, making it well suited for point-of-care applications. However, conventional B-mode imaging is inherently qualitative and primarily sensitive to tissue morphology. Quantitative ultrasound (QUS) methods exploit information contained in backscattered radiofrequency (RF) signals to extract fundamental acoustic tissue properties, such as the backscatter coefficient (BSC) and attenuation, which more directly quantify tissue microstructure and provide complementary information to B-mode

Registration-based workflow for shape study.

Quantitative analysis of shape variation across species has been limited by difficulties in aligning anatomical structures. Although computational techniques for registration have become more accessible, challenges remain that hinder their widespread use in morphometrics. We present a two-step process implemented in Python and MATLAB. The first step is Automated 3D Geometric Morphometrics (auto3dgm), a framework for automatically aligning morphologically diverse objects representing the same anatomical structure. We introduce an updated version with a user-friendly installation, improved inter

Neural-LWE: a biometric-anchored authenticated key agreement for post-quantum brain-computer interfaces.

The proliferation of Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs) and wireless Electroencephalography (EEG) devices necessitates security protocols that are simultaneously quantum-resistant and intrinsically linked to users’ biological identity. While standard post-quantum cryptography like ML-KEM provides foundational security, it fails to address critical neurotechnology requirements: integrated biometric authentication, efficient long-term session management, and resilience to signal noise. This paper presents Neural-LWE (NLWE), a novel biometric-anchored authenticated key agreement protocol for quantu
