A 2-year-old, female, blue and gold macaw (Ara ararauna) presented with respiratory distress following a 1-week history of altered vocalization. The bird was anesthetized for a computed tomography scan, air sac cannulation, and tracheoscopy. The bird was diagnosed with a distal tracheal obstruction, occupying more than 80% of the tracheal lumen. Auditory sensitivity was measured in a species of diving duck that is not often kept in captivity, the lesser scaup. Behavioral (psychoacoustics) and electrophysiological [the auditory brainstem response (ABR)] methods were used to measure in-air auditory sensitivity, and the resulting audiograms were compared. Endoluminal infusion and incubation of elastase with or without collagenase into the rabbit common carotid artery is an established model of arterial saccular aneurysm. The model mimics naturally occurring human cerebral aneurysms in many ways, including histologic and morphologic characteristics, hemodynamic pressures, and shear stresses. However, complications have been associated with the model. Here, we report 2 complications: 1) the first known case of iatrogenic laryngeal hemiplegia in a rabbit; and 2) histopathologically confirmed iatrogenic hippocampal and cerebellar infarcts (stroke).

Electrolaryngeography was used to study the latencies of the thoracolaryngeal adductor reflex in Thoroughbred horses with and without recurrent laryngeal neuropathy (RLN). The possible changes in nociception at various stages of male sexual behaviour were explored in the hot plate test. Although other authors have reported an antinociceptive effect of mating, we failed to find this effect on the hot plate test after several sexual behaviour events. Stuttering is a common neurodevelopmental disorder that has been associated with mutations in genes involved in intracellular trafficking. The effect of glottal aerodynamics in producing the nonlinear characteristics of voice is investigated by comparing the outputs of the asymmetric composite model and the two-mass model. The two-mass model assumes the glottal airflow to be laminar, nonviscous, and incompressible. In this model, when the asymmetric factor is decreased from 0.65 to 0.35, only 1:1 and 1:2 modes are detectable. However, with the same parameters, four vibratory modes (1:1, 1:2, 2:4, 2:6) are found in the asymmetric composite model using the Navier-Stokes equations to describe the complex aerodynamics in the glottis.

A 7-year-old, neutered male, domestic shorthair cat was presented for severe inspiratory dyspnea of 2 to 3 days' duration. Radiography and tracheobronchoscopy confirmed the diagnosis of primary extrathoracic tracheal collapse. The cat was treated with oxygen, dexamethasone, and terbutaline, but no improvement was seen. Surgical correction was performed using nine prosthetic tracheal ring implants. Clinical signs improved after surgery, and the cat continued to do well 11 months after surgery, despite development of unilateral laryngeal paralysis.

We report a rare case of vocal cord fixation caused by a fish bone in the hypopharynx. The patient was a 72-year-old woman. She presented with hoarseness that had appeared suddenly while eating baked fish. The diagnosis was suggested by a clinical history and confirmed by a computed tomography scan. Between January 1989 and June 1998, we operated on 45 patients for sulcus vergeture. The studied population encompassed 38 women (84%) and 7 men (16%). The median age was 36 (range 12 to 71 years). The surgical technique is based on a concept of Cornut and Bouchayer according to which the dissection of the epithelium adherent to the deep subepithelial plane improves the vocal fold vibration.
