Saudi women have recently started using oral contraceptives (OCs), which has led to risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE). The risk varies with the type of OC generations used, and with OC use the risk for VTE increases by 2- to 6-fold. This study evaluated the effect of OC types in relation to ABO blood group on the risk of VTE among Saudi women. Thrombin generation (TG) was measured in the plasma of the women in the presence and absence of platelet rich plasma, platelet poor plasma and thrombomodulin or activated protein C. OC usage increased TG parameters ETP and Peak height by 9.81% and 16.

Clinico-laboratory characteristics of liver lesions occurring in 64 immune donors of blood plasma of 0(1) group are presented. The diseases ran as subclinical, latent, anicteric forms of hepatitis, and only in 5 persons as acute icteric hepatitis. In 50% of the patients there were signs of the disease becoming chronic: long-term increase in the blood serum of the activity of alanine aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase, variations in bilirubin levels. Certain unresolved and disputable problems of etiological diagnosis of hepatitis in plasma donors, especially in differentiation of autoimmune

Cord IgM values were determined in small-for-gestational-age infants born at Hammersmith Hospital during a 5 1/2-year period. 121 (12.5%) infants had levels more than 0.2 g/l; in 92 these were between 0.21 and 0.3 g/l. In only 18 (14.8%) was a level of 0.4 g/l exceeded, and 5 proved cases of intrauterine infection--rubella (2), syphilis (2), and toxoplasmosis (1)--were in this group. The factor most often associated with cord IgM more than 0.4 g/l was prolonged rupture of the membranes. There was an increased incidence of blood group B among the mothers, probably reflecting the greater number

Twenty-three severely neutropenic patients were given 31 courses of ABO and HL-A compatible granulocyte-rich plasma transfusions between 1974--76 at the National Institute of Haematology and Blood Transfusion. The criteria for the effectiveness of therapy were disappearance of fever and survival for over 3 weeks after granulocyte transfusion. Of the 28 evaluated cases granulocyte transfusions were effective in 16 and ineffective in 12 cases. The effectiveness of granulocyte transfusion was favourably influenced by early introduction of therapy, and continuation for several days.

Clearly the pioneering studies on hyperacute rejection, which lead to the concept of antibody-mediated injury to transplants, still present challenges to the clinician today. It is obvious that tests for antibodies before and after transplantation must be further refined to more reliably distinguish among destructive, protective and innocuous antibodies. The current crossmatch tests detect antibodies to donor lymphocytes, but lymphocytes may not always represent adequately the antigenic composition of the tissue that will be transplanted. Moreover the distribution of antigens in transplanted t

OBJECTIVES: The current study aimed to examine the incidence of perioperative infections and graft viability in ABO-compatible and ABO-incompatible renal transplant recipients.
METHODS: We included 643 living donor renal transplant recipients registered in the Michinoku Renal Transplant Network from 1998 to 2021. Patients were divided into the ABO-compatible and ABO-incompatible kidney transplantation groups. We compared the characteristics of the two groups and evaluated the incidence of postoperative viral infections (cytomegalovirus and BK virus), graft loss-free survival, and overall surv

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate CT findings of biliary strictures in ABO-incompatible living donor liver transplantation (LDLT) recipients, with emphasis on associated 1-month post-transplantation CT findings, and evaluate clinical outcomes.
METHODS: Of 351 ABO-incompatible recipients, we retrospectively evaluated CT scans in 65 recipients with biliary stricture. The biliary strictures on CT scans were classified as type A (perihilar) and type B (diffuse). Precedent CT abnormality patterns and the presence of a periportal halo sign at 1-month post-transplantation were evaluated. For each patient, cli

Thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA) after kidney transplantation has various aetiologies, including acute antibody-mediated rejection, bacterial or viral infection and immunosuppressive drugs, particularly calcineurin inhibitors. We present the case of a 28-year-old woman who developed TMA 30 months after the transplantation of an ABO-incompatible kidney from a living unrelated donor. The patient developed a sudden onset of allograft renal dysfunction and became uremic. She was transferred to our institution from a community hospital with strongly suspected acute allograft rejection. Intensive tr

BACKGROUND Thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA) is a severe life-threatening complication associated with solid organ transplantation. We retrospectively investigated the incidence, risk factors, and appropriate treatment of TMA following adult living donor liver transplantation (LDLT). MATERIAL AND METHODS The subjects were 129 adult patients who underwent LDLT in our department from 1997 to 2014. Patients with TMA were identified retrospectively based on diagnostic criteria. We calculated the incidence of TMA and performed a risk factor analysis for TMA occurrence. We also assessed our past trea

OBJECTIVE: To assess changes in anti-blood type antibody titers and postoperative outcomes (graft survival and rejection rates) at our center with the use of the immunosuppressant, rituximab, in ABO-incompatible kidney transplants from living donors. Confirming anti-donor blood group antibodies is important for avoiding humoral rejection in ABO-incompatible kidney transplants. Splenectomy has been carried out in our hospital according to Alexandre's policy in order to suppress the production of anti-donor blood group antibodies. However, splenectomy has recently been avoided due to the adminis

Effect of ABO-incompatible liver transplantation on patients with severe hepatitis B (SHB) remains unclear. Herein, we summarized 22 cases with SHB in whom were performed emergency liver transplantation from ABO-incompatible donors. The immunosuppressive protocol consisted basiliximab, tacrolimus, steroids and mycophenolate mofetil. The mean MELD score was 35.2 ± 7.1. Major complications included rejection, infections, biliary complications, hepatic artery thrombosis or stenosis and portal vein thrombosis. Patient survival rates were 40.9%, 78.9% and 82.3% in 1 year, 29.2%, 66.8% and 72.9% in

Failure to develop antibodies to nonself A and B blood group antigens is well described after infant ABO-incompatible heart transplantation and suggests that exposure to incompatible ABO antigens early in life may lead to tolerance rather than immunogenicity. If this finding is also true following ABO-incompatible cryopreserved homograft implantation, then such patients who require transplantation may be able to accept certain ABO-incompatible organs. In this study, we measured anti-A and -B antibody titers (isohemagglutinins) and allosensitization to human leukocyte antigens (HLA) in 21 patie

A 47-year-old Japanese man was transferred to our hospital because of acute-on-chronic hepatitis B virus infection. On admission, he was suffering from sepsis due to a catheter infection and respiratory failure caused by pulmonary edema and pneumonia, but, as a result of preoperative intensive care, we avoided septic shock. ABO-incompatible liver transplantation (ABO-I-LT) was performed. In accordance with our ABO-I-LT protocol, we administered, rituximab and performed plasma exchange, splenectomy as well as hepatic artery infusion. The patient was discharged 80 days after living donor transpl

BACKGROUND: Chimerism is the presence of two or more genetically distinct cell populations in one organism.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: We report the identification of dispermic chimerism in a 19-year-old female volunteer blood donor. During routine ABO blood grouping strong reactions of the blood donors red blood cells (RBCs) with anti-A reagents and mixed-field reactions with anti-B reagents were observed, while serum-testing showed the absence of anti-A and anti-B antibodies. AB0 blood group genotyping, HLA-typing and microsatellite analysis were performed using blood-samples, buccal mucosa

BACKGROUND: In contrast to human leukocyte antigen (HLA) matching, ABO-blood group incompatibility plays a minor role in the success of allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). Incompatible ABH histo-blood group antigens, expressed on recipient endothelial cells (EC) and donor erythroid progenitor cells, may represent targets for graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) and host-versus-graft reactions, respectively. The aims of the current study were to investigate: (1) red blood cell (RBC) engraftment and (2) EC chimerism as a potential result of replacement of recipient EC by donor

One hundred and forty-one patients with end-stage renal failure underwent ABO-incompatible living kidney transplantation at our institute between January 1989 and December 2001. To remove anti-A and/or anti-B antibodies, the recipients received sessions of double-filtration plasmapheresis and/or sessions of regular plasmapheresis before renal transplantation. Among the initial 53 patients, 1-4 sessions of immunoadsorption were performed before transplantation. Their anti-A immunoglobulin G (IgG)/IgM titers and/or anti-B IgG/IgM titers were reduced to 1:32 or below. Methylprednisolone, cyclospo

Hemolytic disease of foetus and newborn (HDFN) is a disease characterized by the destruction of fetal red cells by the maternal antibodies which occurs due to allo immunization in the mother by feto-maternal blood group incompatibility. The antibodies most frequently implicated in HDFN may vary depending on the demographic location under consideration. In areas where RhIg administration is available, ABO antibodies are more commonly implicated. Following ABO antibodies, anti-RhD antibodies which are of IgG type are more commonly implicated in causing HDFN. HDFN caused by other Rh system antibo
