[Cranial muscle activity in dissociated brain death].

The origin of spontaneous myogenic activity during the registration of isoelectric EEGs for documentation of total brain death has not yet been explained. In nine patients with total brain death, completely abolished acoustic evoked brainstem potentials (AEP), somatosensory evoked potentials (SEP) as well as electrically evoked blink-reflexes (BR) were demonstrated. The peripheral conduction capacity of the facial nerve, however, was never impaired. These findings suggest that peripheral nerve function may be well preserved although brain stem activity is completely abolished and therefore sup

Neural control of human airways in health and disease.

Several aspects of airway function are under autonomic control: airway smooth muscle tone, submucosal gland secretion, epithelial cell function, bronchial vascular tone and permeability, and probably secretion from mast cells and other inflammatory cells. Neural control of human airways is more complex than previously recognized. In addition to afferent nerves and cholinergic adrenergic mechanisms (including circulating catecholamines), there are nonadrenergic, noncholinergic nerves that may be both excitatory and inhibitory. The neurotransmitters of this third nervous system are uncertain, bu

Cervico-vestibular interaction in eye movements.

The cervico-vestibular interaction was investigated in normal subjects and patients with unilateral labyrinthine dysfunction using neck vibratory stimulation and caloric stimulation. There is a functional interaction between sensory inputs from the neck proprioceptors and the peripheral labyrinth in the patients with unilateral labyrinthine dysfunction. However, this interaction was not observed in normal subjects. This result indicates that the role of the cervical sensory inputs in normal subjects and the patients is different. That is, inputs from the neck proprioceptors have little effect

Somatosensory evoked potentials over the non-affected hemisphere in patients with unilateral cerebrovascular lesions.

Changes in somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) over the non-affected hemisphere in 61 patients with unilateral cerebrovascular lesions were studied using age-matched controls. The latencies showed no significant differences when compared to controls. In cerebral infarctions produced by occlusion of the perforating artery in the middle cerebral artery (MCA), the amplitudes over the non-affected hemisphere decreased in the acute phases, but did not change in the chronic phases in comparison with the controls; whereas in cerebral infarctions produced by occlusion of the cortical artery in the

Functional organization of trigeminal subnucleus interpolaris: nociceptive and innocuous afferent inputs, projections to thalamus, cerebellum, and spinal cord, and descending modulation from periaqueductal gray.

In view of continuing uncertainties concerning the organization, afferent inputs, and projection sites of neurons in the subnucleus interpolaris of the trigeminal (V) spinal tract nucleus, the characteristics of 222 single neurons in and adjacent to the subnucleus were examined electrophysiologically in adult cats anesthetized with chloralose. Neurons were tested for orthodromic responsiveness to a variety of stimuli that included nonnoxious tactile stimuli, noxious mechanical and radiant-heat stimuli, and graded electrical stimulation of the skin, mucosa, tooth pulp, and masseter nerve. Somatosensory cerebral potentials evoked by stimulation of the lumbo-sacral spinal cord in normal subjects and in patients with conus medullaris and cauda equina lesions.

Somatosensory cerebral evoked potentials were recorded by intrathecal stimulation of the lumbo-sacral cord and roots in 16 normal subjects and patients having cauda/conus injury (group A, 15 cases), compressive lesions of cauda equina (group B, 13 cases) and lesions of both types covering the lumbar cord (group C, 24 cases). The shape of the intrathecally evoked cerebral potential (IECP) was basically the same as that obtained by posterior tibial nerve stimulation from 12 normal subjects except that the early components were 10-15 msec shorter in latency in the former potential, with an averag

Aortic and carotid chemoreceptor responses to metabolic acidosis in the cat.

The effect of metabolic acidosis on the activity of aortic chemoreceptor afferents and their responses to hypoxia and hypercapnia were investigated in nine cats anesthetized with alpha-chloralose, paralyzed, and artificially ventilated. This effect was compared with that on simultaneously recorded activity of carotid chemoreceptor afferents in three separate cats. The activity of a single or paucifiber preparation of chemoreceptor afferents was recorded at five steady-state levels of arterial O2 tension (PaO2) at a constant arterial CO2 tension (PaCO2) and at three levels of PaCO2 during hyper

Analysis of carbamazepine actions in hippocampal slices of the rat.

Carbamazepine at therapeutic concentrations has a strong inhibitory effect on the spontaneous field bursts of the CA 1 region of rat hippocampal slices in low-Ca2+, high-Mg2+ solution. A reduction of excitability and synaptic transmission as well as no effect on posttetanic potentiation in the rat hippocampal slice by carbamazepine agrees with previous studies on spinal cord and peripheral nerve. Carbamazepine left synaptic inhibition and hyperpolarizing afterpotentials unaltered while these inhibitory processes were markedly enhanced by pentobarbital and adenosine, respectively. The spontaneo

Thalamic mediodorsal nucleus and memory: a critical evaluation of studies in animals and man.

Following a general description of the anatomical organization of the thalamic mediodorsal nucleus (MD) of animals and man, the involvement of this nucleus in the processing of memory related information has been evaluated by reviewing stimulation, electrophysiological, and lesion studies in animals, and by reviewing research on induced lesions, degenerative changes and vascular damage of MD in humans. Neither the results from animal experiments nor those from studies on humans provide clear-cut evidence for a specific, memory related role of MD. However, the findings here presented do support

Prolonged stimulation of respiration by a new central neural mechanism.

The inspiratory responses to stimulation by peripheral chemoreceptor, central chemoreceptor and calf muscle afferents were studied in anesthetized, or decerebrate, paralyzed cats whose end-tidal PCO2 was servo-controlled and kept constant. All stimuli were associated with immediate increases of inspiratory (phrenic) activity and at offset were followed by a respiratory afterdischarge lasting approximately five minutes. The level of inspiratory activity following decay of the afterdischarge was the same as the prestimulation control after central chemoreceptor and calf muscle stimulation. Howev

[Functional state of the CNS at extreme levels of spatial synchronization of background potentials of rabbit neocortex].

Neurophysiological mechanisms of facilitation of excitation transmission from receptors to effectors were studied in the case of maximal correlation between cortical potentials. This condition was accompanied by a rise in excitability of the sensorimotor, visual, auditory cortex and of the dorsal hippocampus as well as by an increase of muscle activity. On the basis of the obtained and literature data it is suggested that maximal synchroneity of cortical potentials reflects a certain state not only of the neocortex, but also of other CNS parts, down to spinal centres. This condition is attende

Protocol for a prospective, randomized study on neurophysiological assessment of lower urinary tract function in a healthy cohort.

BACKGROUND: Lower urinary tract symptoms are highly prevalent and a large proportion of these symptoms are known to be associated with a dysfunction of the afferent pathways. Diagnostic tools for an objective and reproducible assessment of afferent nerve function of the lower urinary tract are missing. Previous studies showed first feasibility results of sensory evoked potential recordings following electrical stimulation of the lower urinary tract in healthy subjects and patients. Nevertheless, a refinement of the methodology is necessary. METHODS: This study is a prospective, randomized tri…

Oral treatment with methanolic extract of the root bark of Condalia buxifolia Reissek alleviates acute pain and inflammation in mice: Potential interactions with PGE2, TRPV1/ASIC and PKA signaling pathways.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: The Condalia buxifolia root bark infusion is used in traditional medicine in Brazil as antipyretic, anti-inflammatory and anti-dysentery. Previous data from our group showed that methanolic extract of Condalia buxifolia (MECb) produced a marked antinociceptive effect in animal models of acute pain. The purpose of this study was to investigate the mechanisms of MECb-induced antinociception as measured by nocifensive behavior in pain induced by endogenous (prostaglandin E2) or exogenous (TRPs and ASIC agonist, and protein kinase A and C activators) chemical stimul

Roles of Glycinergic and Gamma-aminobutyric-ergic Mechanisms in the Micturition Reflex in Rats.

The micturition reflex is one of the autonomic reflexes mediated by the spinobulbospinal reflex pathway that passes through the pontine micturition center. In the central nervous system, glutamate is a major excitatory amino acid, while glycine and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) are major inhibitory neurotransmitters and act to inhibit the micturition reflex at supraspinal and/or spinal sites. Glycine and GABA have additive or synergistic inhibitory effects on bladder activity. Hypofunction of glycinergic/GABAergic mechanisms in the lumbosacral spinal cord induces voiding dysfunctions, such as

Obtaining automated diagnostic information and pain relief.

The silent confluent flow of a conglomerate of sensory related signals is automatically delegated to the total specific distribution of a single spinal nerve. This silent confluent flow may be accessed, evaluated, and modified by using intradermal saline infiltration to stimulate the sensory receptors located in the skin overlying its nerve root. An unmistakable augmented burst of infiltration pain immediately followed by profound long lasting pain relief identifies a spinal nerve monitoring peripheral pathology. The identification of a monitoring spinal nerve tentatively confirms the presence

Chewing-induced hypertension in afferent baroreflex failure: a sympathetic response?

What is the central question of this study? Our goal was to understand the autonomic responses to eating in patients with congenital afferent baroreflex failure, by documenting changes in blood pressure and heart rate with chewing, swallowing and stomach distension. What is the main finding and its importance? Patients born with lesions in the afferent baroreceptor pathways have an exaggerated pressor response to food intake. This appears to be a sympathetically mediated response, triggered by chewing, that occurs independently of swallowing or distension of the stomach. The chewing-induced pr

Tachykinins in the gut. Part I. Expression, release and motor function.

The preprotachykinin-A gene-derived peptides substance P and neurokinin (NK) A are expressed in distinct neural pathways of the mammalian gut. When released from intrinsic enteric or extrinsic primary afferent neurons, tachykinins have the potential to influence both nerve and muscle by way of interaction with three different types of tachykinin receptor, termed NK1, NK2 and NK3 receptors. Most prominent among the effects of tachykinins is their excitatory action on gastrointestinal motor activity, which is seen in virtually all regions and layers of the mammalian gut. This action depends not
