This study aimed to identify areas of disagreement in the management of neurogenic pain. A short questionnaire was mailed to 179 consultants with an interest in chronic pain (response rate 89%). The questionnaire listed 11 specific conditions involving nerve pain (e.g., post-herpetic neuralgia, causalgia) together with 11 treatments (e.g., antidepressants, neurectomy). PURPOSE: To avoid wastage of prostheses and unfair selection methods for prosthetic prescription, we aimed to develop a practical assessment tool for amputees with doubtful potential, using refurbished second hand modular prostheses.
METHOD: Thirty-seven primary amputees (33 transfemoral, 4 transtibial; 22 males, 15 females; median age 71 years, range 19-91) were considered to have doubtful potential for prosthetic use, due to single or multiple impairments. Amputees were assessed using custom-made socket and refurbished second-hand modular prostheses. Liability issues were fully covered.

BACKGROUND: Diabetes mellitus is a worldwide pandemic that impacts more than 387 million people, with 29 million individuals affected in the United States alone. Diabetic patients have a 25% lifetime risk of developing a diabetic foot ulcer (DFU). Having a DFU is associated with a risk of recurrence approaching 70%. From 1977 through 1980, 251 veterans from the San Francisco Bay Area received permanent lower-extremity prostheses at the two local Veterans Administration hospitals. For a survey, 213 of the 251 were contacted and 179 of them (84%) responded to written or telephone questionnaires concerning their prosthetic problems and complaints and their recommendations regarding prosthetic care.
