Cognitive and daily functioning in older adults with vegetative symptoms of depression.

OBJECTIVES: In primary care 50-95% of patients with depression present with vegetative symptoms (VS). Based on the extant literature, older adults showing VS (but no dysphoria) may show functional impairment but this hypothesis has not been empirically tested. The goal of this study was to examine neurocognitive and daily functioning of elderly patients showing exclusively VS in comparison with patients presenting with VS and dysphoria. METHODS: Seven hundred and eighty-seven primary care patients received measures of neurocognition and daily functioning. Neurocognition was measured with the

Hepatic-portal oleic acid inhibits feeding more potently than hepatic-portal caprylic acid in rats.

In several human and animal studies, medium-chain triglycerides decreased food intake more than did long-chain triglycerides. It is possible that faster uptake and metabolism of medium-chain fatty acids in the liver is responsible for this difference. To test this hypothesis we compared the feeding effects of hepatic portal vein (HPV) infusion of the medium-chain fatty acid caprylic acid (CA) with those of the long-chain fatty acid oleic acid (OA). Contrary to our expectation, six-h HPV infusion of 14 microg/min (50 nmol/min) OA robustly inhibited feeding, whereas infusion of 22 or 220 microg/

Weight loss behaviors and smoking in college students of diverse ethnicity.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate weight concerns, weight-loss practices (including smoking) in an ethnically diverse group of university students (58% Hispanic). METHODS: Students (n=1,852) completed a survey addressing lifestyle behaviors and weight-control practices. RESULTS: A greater percentage of females than males practiced weight-loss behaviors. More Hispanic and non-Hispanic white students reported dieting, exercising, and using weight loss pills to lose weight. Only 4 of the females reported their primary reason for smoking was to control their weight. CONCLUSION: Gender as well as ethnicity

How to help your patients lose weight: current therapy for obesity.

Obesity is epidemic and dangerous. Weight loss is difficult but worth the effort. Although new weight-loss drugs are available, there are no magic bullets: to lose weight and keep it off, people must eat less and exercise more. This article presents a practical approach on how physicians can help their patients lose weight through diet, behavior modification, and adjunctive pharmacologic therapy. An appropriate initial goal is to lose 5% to 10% of one's baseline weight over 3 to 6 months. Drug therapy should not be used in isolation, but it can be an adjunct to diet, exercise, and behavior mod

d-fenfluramine anorexia: dissociation of ingestion rate, meal duration, and meal size effects.

In the present study, we ask whether the suppressive effect of d-fenfluramine (d-FEN) on short-term intake can be better explained in terms of a primary action on particular behavioral parameters (e.g., ingestion rate or meal duration), as proposed by several investigators, or in terms of a primary effect on an intake "target" that can be achieved via diverse behavioral strategies. We applied two specialized intake testing paradigms that constrain the behavioral structure of the rat's meal in different ways, and determined whether or not the meal-size result varied in turn. (1) In the intraora

The effect of N-methylation on fenfluramine's neurotoxic and pharmacologic actions.

N-Methylation separates methamphetamine's neurotoxic and pharmacologic effects. In particular, N-methylation eliminates methamphetamine's neurotoxic activity while preserving its behavioral pharmacologic activity. The purpose of the present studies was to determine whether N-methylation could also be used to separate fenfluramine's neurotoxic and pharmacologic effects. Fenfluramine-induced serotonin neurotoxicity was assessed by measuring serotonin axonal markers 2 weeks after fenfluramine administration. Pharmacologic effects of fenfluramine were assessed by measuring fenfluramine-induced ano

HemiParkinson analogue rats display active support in good limbs versus passive support in bad limbs on a skilled reaching task of variable height.

Rats with unilateral dopamine (DA) depletion (hemiParkinson analogue rats) are impaired in using the contralateral (bad) limbs for skilled movements and for postural adjustments and compensate by using their good limbs in novel ways. The present study consisted of a reaching task in which compensatory adjustments using the good limbs would not be affective, thus forcing the rats to use their bad limbs. The DA-depleted rats failed to use their bad hindlimb to extend their reach at high reaching heights and failed to lower their body with their bad forelimb to reach at low reaching heights. It i

Selective dopamine D-1 receptor agonists, SK&F 38393 and CY 208-243 reduce sucrose sham-feeding in the rat.

Gastric-fistulated rats were trained to sham-feed a 10% sucrose solution in a 60 min test. The selective dopamine D-1 receptor agonists, SK&F 38393 (3 and 10 mg/kg, s.c.) and CY 208-243 (1 and 3 mg/kg, s.c.) both produced dose-related reductions in sham-feeding. These effects were present in the first 5 min of the test period, and persisted throughout the remainder of the test. The data confirm and extend results for an anorectic effect of SK&F 38393 and demonstrate, for the first time, a similar anorectic effect of CY 208-243.

Production of climbing behaviour in mice requires both D1 and D2 receptor activation.

The ability of SKF38393 (a D1 agonist), quinpirole (a D2 agonist), and apomorphine (a mixed D1/D2 agonist) to induce stereotyped climbing behaviour in mice was investigated. Apomorphine produced a dose-related increase in stereotyped cage climbing which lasted for up to 60 min. SKF38393 and quinpirole failed to produce climbing when administered alone. When given in combination intense apomorphine-like cage climbing was observed which lasted for up to 2 h. Apomorphine or the combination of SKF38393 and quinpirole also produced biting of the cage. The climbing behaviour produced by either apomo

Obesity and Dietary Added Sugar Interact to Affect Postprandial GLP-1 and Its Relationship to Striatal Responses to Food Cues and Feeding Behavior.

It has been hypothesized that the incretin hormone, glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), decreases overeating by influencing mesolimbic brain regions that process food-cues, including the dorsal striatum. We previously showed that habitual added sugar intake was associated with lower glucose-induced circulating GLP-1 and a greater striatal response to high calorie food cues in lean individuals. Less is known about how dietary added sugar and obesity may interact to affect postprandial GLP-1 and its relationship to striatal responses to food cues and feeding behavior. The current study aimed to exp

Alpha1-adrenergic receptor blockade in the ventral tegmental area modulates conditional stimulus-induced cocaine seeking.

Exposure to drug-associated cues evokes drug-craving and upregulates noradrenaline (NA) and dopamine (DA) system activity. Importantly, conditional stimulus-induced drug-seeking behavior depends particularly on phasic DA signaling downstream from the ventral tegmental area (VTA), a midbrain structure key for the regulation of cocaine seeking. In particular, the activity of the alpha1-adrenergic receptor (α1-AR), which has recently been hypothesized to modulate salience encoding, is capable of bidirectional regulation of VTA dopaminergic activity. Thus, the impact of the conditional stimuli (CS

Lifestyle management for enhancing outcomes after bariatric surgery.

Bariatric surgery has been safe and effective for treatment of severe obesity and comorbidities like type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D). Nonetheless, weight loss and health outcomes vary considerably across individuals. Although the factors associated with outcomes are not fully understood, postoperative weight loss following any type of bariatric surgery is largely dependent on the extent to which patients can make and sustain changes in eating and activity. Therefore, lifestyle management including diet, exercise, and behavior modification is critical to helping patients achieve long-term weight

Cytokine-induced sickness behavior: mechanisms and implications.

Sickness behavior refers to a coordinated set of behavioral changes that develop in sick individuals during the course of an infection. At the molecular level, these changes are due to the brain effects of proinflammatory cytokines such as interleukin-1 (IL-1) and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFalpha). Peripherally released cytokines act on the brain via a fast transmission pathway involving primary afferent nerves innervating the bodily site of inflammation and a slow transmission pathway involving cytokines originating from the choroid plexus and circumventricular organs and diffusing into

The role of gut microbiota in shaping and modulating dietary preferences in neurological diseases: implications for microbiota-targeted interventions.

A high percentage of patients with neurological diseases have significant dietary preference abnormalities (such as picky eating and texture sensitivity). Studies show Gut Microbiota (GM) mediates dietary preferences via the microbiota-gut-brain axis (MGBA), such as depression-related appetite changes linked to gut flora imbalance. GM directly or indirectly regulates dietary behavior through the vagal-mediated gut-brain signaling pathway. On the one hand, gut bacterial metabolites (such as butyrate) can directly activate vagal afferents, which project signals through the nucleus of the solitar

The inside story: Interoceptive Pavlovian conditioning with the nicotine stimulus.

Pavlovian conditioning plays a crucial role in promoting well-being and supporting healthy behaviors but also contributes to the development of diseases and psychopathologies. Much of the basic and applied research on these conditioning processes has focused on external or exteroceptive cues (tone, spider, context, and brewery) as the conditioned stimulus (CS) or occasion setter. Considerably less empirical effort has been devoted to studying Pavlovian conditioning involving internal or interoceptive stimuli, such as indigestion, low blood sugar, back pain, or drug intoxication function as the

Gut Microbiota in Women with Eating Disorders: A New Frontier in Pathophysiology and Treatment.

Emerging evidence highlights the critical role of the gut microbiota in the development and progression of eating disorders (EDs), particularly in women, who are more frequently affected by these conditions. Women with anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating disorder exhibit distinct alterations in gut microbiota composition compared to healthy controls. These alterations, collectively termed dysbiosis, involve reduced microbial diversity and shifts in key bacterial populations responsible for regulating metabolism, inflammation, and gut-brain signaling. The gut microbiota is known

Stimulation of the ventromedial prefrontal cortex and the perception of affective faces. An effective connectivity analysis.

The ventromedial prefrontal cortex is widely linked with emotional phenomena, including appraisal, modulation, and reward processing. Its perigenual part is suggested to mediate the appetitive value of stimulation. In our previous study, besides changes in evoked MEG responses, we were able to induce an apparent behavioral bias toward more positive valence while interpreting the ambiguous, morphed faces after the effect of excitatory tDCS stimulation of the perigenual ventromedial cortex (pgVM). In the present study, we reanalyze these data to reveal the importance of functional links between
