Effect of transdermally administered scopolamine in preventing motion sickness.

The efficacy of transdermally administered scopolamine was compared with the efficacy of oral dimenhydrinate and placebo therapy in the prevention of motion-induced mausea in a vertical oscillator; medications were administered on a double-blind cross-over basis, with the order of treatments counterbalanced. Thirty-five subjects known to be susceptible to the stimulus were utilized. A placebo effect reduced the motion sickness incidence (MSI) from 100% to 59%. Administration of dimenhydrinate reduced the MSI to 32%, and use of the transdermal therapeutic system scopolamine (TTS-scopolamine) fu

Prevention and treatment of space sickness in shuttle-orbiter missions.

Today it is impossible accurately to predict susceptibility to space sickness of crew members making their first transition into orbit, for want of a ground-based validated model of free fall. Even assuming that space sickness is simply a specific designation for motion sickness that may be experienced in orbital flight (and here agreement is not general), preventive therapy poses difficult problems because, for a priori reasons, either all crew members or none should receive treatment. If all receive preventive therapy, everyone should execute head movements in a programmed manner to ensure r

Increased survival in experimental dog heatstroke after reduction of gut flora.

A study was undertaken to determine if gut flora contribute to the pathophysiology of experimental canine heatstroke. Fifty animals in four groups were anesthetized with sodium pentobarbital (25 mg/kg) intravenously. An air temperature of 42-46 degrees C was maintained adjacent to the dog with a water-heated blanket for approximately 2 h until rectal temperatures rose to 43.5 +/- 0.4 degrees C. Animals were then cooled passively in room air (28 degrees C, 20% RH) until death or until 18 h elapsed, and were euthanized. Reduction of intestine stool and bacterial contents with antibiotics, cathar

Bimodal relationship of human tremor and shivering on introduction to cold exposure.

Four subjects were exposed to an environmental challenge of -12 degrees C for 15 min in four conditions of exposure: 1) clothed body and clothed arm, 0.5 clo units: 2) clothed body and exposed arm, 0.4 col; 3) exposed body and exposed arm, 0.1 clo: 4) exposed body and clothed arm, 0.2 clo. Core temperature, surface temperature of the right arm, perceived thermal comfort, EMG indicated onset of shivering, and the frequency of tremor using accelerometry were monitored and data collected every 30 s. The results indicate that tremor frequency significantly increases with cold exposure, but that a

Regional heat loss in resting man during immersion in 25.2 degrees C water.

Five male subjects having a wide range of relative body fat, 9.2-20.2%, were studied during total body immersion in water at 25.2 degrees C. The regional surface area of each subject was calculated from anthropometric data utilizing a segmental geometric model. Skin temperatures (Tsk) and regional skin heat loss were measured prior to and during 30 min immersion at 13 sites. During immersion, mean Tsk was 25.9 degrees C and remained significantly higher than the water temperature. A measurable temperature gradient for heat flow was observed from all body segments. Segimental temperature in wat

Heat- and exercise-induced hyperthermia: effects on high-energy phosphates.

To assess the role of high-energy phosphate compounds in the etiology of heat injury with respect to the release of intracellular constituents, the susceptibility of selected tissues to heat injury, and the shock-like demise of the animals, rats were exercised on a treadmill (9.14 m/min) in a hot environment (34.5-35 degrees C) to a rectal temperature (Tre) of 42.5-43 degrees C. In the heart, kidney, left lateral lobe of the liver, and gastrocnemius muscle extricated from animals immediately upon termination of the treadmill run, levels of glucose-6-phosphate (G-6-P), adenosine triphosphate (A

Psychological states and aerobic fitness of male and female recruits before and after basic training.

Psychological states and aerobic fitness were measured using a battery of psychological tests and a bicycle ergometer work test. A group of approximately two hundred male and female subjects were tested at the beginning of a six week basic training cycle and another group of two hundred were tested at the completion of basic training. A difference in mood, anxiety, self confidence and physical fitness was evident in the groups of male recruits, but not in the female recruits after training. A significant difference existed between males and females in terms of physical work capacity. These dif

Effects of long-hose breathing.

The need for aircrew members to use long breathing hoses between regulator and mask arises in the design of new transport aircraft and in several cargo operations requiring an open rear door. In this study, induced work of breathing through long hoses, the resulting changes in oxygen consumption, and comfort were studied in relation to altitude, hose length, and exercise level. Conclusions were that, above 18,000 ft (5.5 km), a 30-ft (9.1-m) hose is acceptable for all reasonable work levels; for altitudes between 13,000 and 18,000 ft (4.0 and 5.5 km), the hose length should preferably be 18 ft

Effects of hypocapnia on psychomotor and intellectual performance.

Nine subjects performed five psychomotor tasks (two motor, two intellectual, and one combined motor and short-term memory) at three levels of PACO2 (38.5, 25.0 and 15.0 torr) with voluntary hyperventilation at 20 l/min. There were no performance decrements at PACO2 levels of 38.5 and 25.0 torr. At a PACO2 of 15.0 torr, there were no decrements of intellectual performance but there were highly significant decrements in motor performance. It is suggested that a lack of regional cerebral hypoxia, arising from compensating changes in regional cerebral blood flow, could be responsible for the prese

Changes in EEG pattern during acclimatization to high altitude (3500 m) in man.

This study was conducted on 30 healthy soldiers to observe EEG changes during acclimatization to high altitude. Of these subjects, 10 were lowlanders (LL), 10 were acclimatized low landers (AL), and 10 10 were high-altitude natives (HAN). The EEG was recorded by the 10-20 international system of electrode placement in LL at sea level (SL) during rest and hyperventilation (HV). Then they were air-lifted to an altitude of 3500 m where periodic recordings of EEG were made for 4 weeks. For comparison, the altitude recordings were also made in AL and HAN. The quantitative analysis of EEG (occipital

Prevention of motion sickness in flight maneuvers, aided by transfer of adaptation effects acquired in the laboratory: ten consecutive referrals.

Ten flyers, grounded because of nausea and vomiting, were referred as potential candidates for adaptation to cross-coupled angular accelerations in a slow-rotation room; such adaptation has been shown to "transfer" to flight maneuvers. There was no opportunity to attempt treatment in two candidates. Among the remaining eight, five regained flight status (62.5%); follow-up periods of those five candidates ranged from 10 to 27 months. In one of the three remaining candidates, a satisfactory level of adaptation was achieved but more than 4 months elapsed before his assignment to a duty squadron.

Impairment of flying efficiency in anancastic pilots.

Previous work on the effects of stress upon flying efficiency has shown two types of psychological stress to exist; these are usually referred to as cognitive and affective stress, respectively. A refinement in affective stress analysis has enabled two subtypes of stress to be demonstrated--one is characterized by activity of the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) and subjective feelings of rage, fear, anxiety, or frustration; the other by excessive rumination. These two subtypes are found in differing personality configurations. Ten pilots exhibiting the former type of stress, and 6 with the la

Suicide by aircraft: a case report.

A 36-year-old pilot took his plane on a brief, unauthorized flight that ended in a high-speed vertical crash next to the runway. A retrospective "psychological autopsy" yielded strong presumptive evidence of an unrecognized depression in a man with manipulative and mildly antisocial characteristics. His withdrawal from his usual patterns of behavior was, instead, regarded as a desirable return to "normal" behavior. This case report includes comments on the role of the psychological autopsy in aircraft accident investigation, anniversary reactions, the use of psychiatric diagnosis to support th

Hearing under stress: II. Effect of hyperventilation and hypercapnia on speech discrimination.

Changes in the ability to discriminate speech from a eucapnic state to hyperventilation and hypercapnia were investigated. Standard speech audiometric techniques were employed to determine the speech reception threshold and the speech discrimination values, while respiratory conditions were varied and measured utilizing a mixed-gas breathing method. Respiratory parameters were similar to those encountered in aircraft personnel who experience oxygen/pressure system malfunction. The results of the study suggest no significant change in the speech reception threshold while in a hyperventilated or

Optokinetic motion sickness: continuous head movements attenuate the visual induction of apparent self-rotation and symptoms of motion sickness.

Symptoms of motion sickness are sometimes experienced during exposure to optokinetic stimulation. Two experimetns were performed to compare the symptoms of motion sickness elicited when subjects were exposed to incremental changes in optokinetic stimulation while sitting passively and while continuously executing shoulder-to-shoulder head movements. In the first experiment, a fixed head-movement frequency (20 cpm) was used, wheras in the second the subjects varied the frequency of their head movements in order to maintain suppression of illusory self-rotation. In both experiments, subjects in

Somatosensory motion after-effect following earth-horizontal rotation about the Z-axis: a new illusion.

During rotation about the Z-axos while recumbent one is exposed to a changing pattern of pressure cues over the body surface. If the body is only loosely padded in the experimental apparatus, then apparent motion of part of the body surface may be experienced sometime after rotation has been terminated. This somatosensory motion aftereffect of opposite sign is temporarily abolished if one looks at the affected body area, but is again re-experienced when the gaze is shifted elswhere. The similarity of this motion aftereffect to those contingent on vestibular and visual stimulation is discussed.

Motion sickness and otolith sensitivity: a pilot study of habituation to linear acceleration.

Astronauts, particularly in Skylab flights, experienced varying degrees of motion sickness lasting 3-5 d. One possible mechanism for this motion sickness adaptation is believed to be a reduction in otolith sensitivity with an attendant reduction in sensory conflict. In an attempt to determine if this hypothesis is valid, a ground-based pilot study was conducted on a vertical linear accelerator. The extent of habituation to accelerations which initially produced motion sickness was evaluated, along with the possible value of habituation training to minimize the space motion sickness problem. Responses to temperate, cold, and hot environments and the effect of physical training.

Ten young men underwent several tests before and after a training program: a bicycle ergometer test and 60 min of moderate exercise performed at a temperate 24 degrees C; the same work load performed in heat (40.0 degrees C DB, 30.4 degrees C WB) for 3 h; and cold (10 degrees C) exposure for 60 min. Training consisted of 13 1-h sessions of hard, strenuous, and exhaustive work performed in temperate conditions four times a week. Training resulted in substantial decreases in heart rate and rectal temperature responses to exercise in temperate, minor increases in hot, and no significant changes i
