Death Literacy and Death Competence in Undergraduate Clinical and Allied Health Education: Protocol for a Mixed Methods Study.

BACKGROUND: End-of-life care is a critical competency for the health care workforce, yet evidence suggests that many health care professionals feel unprepared to engage with death, dying, and bereavement. Death literacy and death competence are emerging frameworks for assessing readiness to provide high-quality, compassionate care. Although validated tools exist, little is known about the preparedness of final-year undergraduate health care students in Australia. Understanding their current levels of death literacy and death competence is essential for informing curriculum design and strengthe…

Adolescents' experiences with uxoricide.

The purpose of this study was to describe the experiences of individuals who survived the loss of one or both parents through parental homicide or homicide/suicide as adolescents. Participants (N = 34) were aged between 12 and 19 years at the time of the death and were aged between 29 and 64 years at the time of the interview. Participants were interviewed twice and asked to tell the story of their lives. Data were analyzed in the hermeneutic phenomenological tradition using a stepwise process of developing categories and then a single complex theme. Common categories of participants' childhoo

Stability and change in health, functional abilities, and behavior problems among adults with and without Down syndrome.

Changes in health, functional abilities, and behavior problems among 150 adults with Down syndrome and 240 adults with mental retardation due to other causes were examined with seven assessments over a 9-year period. Adults were primarily younger than 40, the age at which declines begin to be evident in individuals with Down syndrome. Adults with Down syndrome were advantaged in their functional abilities and lack of behavior problems, comparable in health, and exhibited comparable rates of change on these measures as adults with mental retardation due to other causes. Maternal recall of symptoms associated with childhood deaths in rural east Africa.

Verbal autopsies (VA) are frequently used to determine causes of death for individuals for whom there is no reliable clinical information regarding the terminal illness. VA interviews are used to note key symptoms and signs recalled by relatives of the deceased and diagnoses ascribed according to the symptom complexes. The VA technique assumes that individual disease entities have discrete symptom complexes and that these can be accurately recognized and recalled by the interviewees. We have examined the accuracy with which specific symptoms are recalled over time by mothers or normal guardian

Psychological interventions for terroristic trauma: prevention, crisis management, and clinical treatment strategies.

Childhood adversity and self-poisoning: A hospital case control study in Sri Lanka.

INTRODUCTION: Adverse childhood experiences (ACE) have been recognized as an important risk factor for suicidal behaviour among adults, but evidence from low and middle-income countries is lacking. This study explored associations between ACE and hospital admission due to non-fatal self-poisoning in Sri Lanka. METHODS: This was a case-control study. Adults admitted to a tertiary care hospital for medical management of self-poisoning were included as cases, and age and sex matched controls were recruited from the outpatient department. ACE were measured using the World Health Organization's Ch

Palliative and end-of-life care for patients with ovarian cancer.

Palliative care improves the quality of life of patients and their families through the prevention and treatment of distressing symptoms while addressing the psychological, social, and spiritual aspects of patient care. Emerging paradigms of delivery promote early involvement in the disease trajectory and specialty approaches to care. Interdisciplinary assessment and shared decision making are important components. Throughout the disease course, aggressive symptom management can improve patients' quality of life and their ability to tolerate and continue treatment. End-of-life care focuses on

Child loss and psychosis onset: evidence for traumatic experience as an etiological factor in psychosis.

Previous research suggests that trauma may contribute to psychosis onset. In this study, we examine the effect of parental loss of a child on the onset of psychotic experience using data from the National Comorbidity Survey Replication, hypothesizing that child loss will precede the onset of psychosis and will be associated with a later age of onset. We likewise tested this association for six other psychiatric conditions to demonstrate specificity for psychosis. Individuals with a psychotic disorder who had lost a child had a significantly later age of onset, particularly in males, even when

Stress sensitization and adolescent depressive severity as a function of childhood adversity: a link to anxiety disorders.

The goal of the present study was to determine whether exposure to adversity in childhood contributes to a differential threshold at which stressful life events provoke depressive reactions in adolescence. In addition, to address empirical and conceptual questions about stress effects, the moderating effect of anxiety disorder history was also explored. This examination was conducted in a sample of 816 children of depressed and nondepressed mothers, who were followed from birth to age 15. Information on adversities experienced in childhood was collected both from mothers during the first five

Perceptions of parental caring predict health status in midlife: a 35-year follow-up of the Harvard Mastery of Stress Study.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined how the perception of parental caring, obtained from undergraduates, relates to subsequent health over the ensuing 35 years. METHODS: In the early 1950s, initial ratings of parental caring were obtained from a sample of healthy, Harvard undergraduate men who participated in the Harvard Mastery of Stress Study. In a 35 year prospective, follow-up investigation, detailed medical and psychological histories and medical records were obtained. RESULTS: Subjects identified in midlife as suffering from illnesses such as coronary artery disease, hypertension, duodenal

Characteristics of higher-education students in England who died by suspected suicide in a single academic year: a national retrospective case series study.

BACKGROUND: Suicide in young people is a global priority and strengthening mental health support in education is central to England's suicide prevention strategy. Few studies have examined in detail the individual characteristics of higher-education students nationally who died by suicide. We aimed to describe individual and institutional characteristics of suspected student suicide, contact with support services, and adherence to sector guidance on serious incident investigations. METHODS: We used a national case-series design to identify suspected suicide deaths in higher-education students
