Routine collection of patient-reported outcomes in HIV clinics: lessons learned after more than 130 000 assessments have been completed.

OBJECTIVE: Patient-reported outcomes (PROs) provide important information to improve healthcare and facilitate research but can be difficult to implement in busy care settings. DESIGN: We integrated PRO collection into HIV care (2008-2024) with results summarized for providers to improve clinical care. METHODS: PWH presenting for HIV care at nine clinics across the United States in the CFAR Network of Integrated Clinical Systems (CNICS) were asked to complete a touch-screen-based PRO assessment at routine clinic visits using a web-based application. RESULTS: 21 725 PWH completed the CNICS c

Racism-related experiences and substance use: A systematic and meta-analytic review.

Examinations highlighting interpersonal racism-related experiences as risk factors for substance use are well documented, particularly for alcohol use. The associations between racism-related experiences across other levels of influence (e.g., historical trauma, online, internalized) and use of other types of substances, while emerging, have yielded mixed findings. The present systematic review and meta-analyses examined the associations between multilevel racism-related experiences and different types of substances including substance use overall, alcohol, binge drinking, tobacco/nicotine, ca…

Oral Probiotic Expressing Human Ethanol Dehydrogenase Attenuates Damage Caused by Acute Alcohol Consumption in Mice.

Alcohol is an essential drug in human life with multiple medical functions, but excessive alcohol intake, even a single episode of binge drinking, can cause serious damage. Reducing alcohol consumption or absorption is a direct way to alleviate the related harm. Alcohol is decomposed successively by alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) and acetaldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) in the liver. Here, we produced a human ADH1B (hADH1B)-expressing probiotic, a recombinant Lactococcus lactis, that aimed to enhance alcohol degradation in the intestinal tract after oral administration. Our results showed that the o…

The Association Between Sexual Identity, Depression, and Adolescent Substance Use.

Sexual minority youth (SMY) represent a population vulnerable to several adverse health consequences. Specifically, SMY experience depression and substance use at substantially higher rates than heterosexual peers. Better understanding the relationship between depression and substance use among SMY may help reduce morbidity and mortality. We hypothesize that depression will moderate increased substance use rates seen in SMY. Weighted logistical analyses of covariance, adjusted for race/ethnicity, sex, and age, compared the relationship between sexual identity, depression, and substance use (14
