Central nervous system infection with Listeria monocytogenes. 33 years' experience at a general hospital and review of 776 episodes from the literature.

We reviewed 776 previously reported and 44 new cases of CNS listeriosis outside of pregnancy and the neonatal period, and evaluated the epidemiologic, diagnostic, and therapeutic characteristics of this infection. Among patients with Listeria meningitis/meningoencephalitis, hematologic malignancy and kidney transplantation were the leading predisposing factors, but 36% of patients had no underlying diseases recognized. The infection occurred throughout life, with a higher incidence before the age of 3 and after the age of 45-50 years. Fever, altered sensorium, and headache were the most common

Nocardial cerebral abscess: report of a case.

Cerebral nocardiosis is an uncommon disease which has not been previously reported in Taiwan. We describe a 70-years-old man who, known to have a history of rectal cancer, developed a cerebral nocardial abscess. The patient was admitted with a week history of gradual weakness of the left limbs. There was neither fever nor headache. Neurological examination disclosed left hemiparesis. Computed tomography of the brain revealed a decreased density in the right parietal region with a ring enhancement. Biopsy of the cerebral lesion showed Nocardia asteroides.

Concurrent Intramedullary and Intracranial Tuberculomass.

Tuberculosis of the central nervous system (CNS) is well known. CNS involvement can occur in the form of tubercular meningitis (TBM), tuberculous vasculitis, tuberculoma and rarely brain abscess. Tubercular granulomas generally solitary and occur in the brain but they may be multiple and involve other areas such as spinal cord, epidural space and subdural space also. Tuberculoma in the spinal cord is rare. Co-occurrence of intracerebral and intramedullary spinal tuberculoma is extremely rare in children with only few cases reported till date. We are reporting one such case in children and revi…

[Infective endocarditis with splenic abscess and cerebral hemorrhage].

A 65-year-old man was admitted with ataxic gait and high fever. Brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed multiple cerebral hemorrhages and echocardiogram showed vegetations attached to the mitral valve and moderate mitral regurgitation. No microorganisms were identified by blood culture examination. Despite adequate treatment with antibiotics, large multiple splenic abscesses were detected by computed tomography (CT), the patient complained of fever and the value of CRP was increased again. We decided to first perform splenectomy, followed by mitral valve repair and maze operation. The pa

Cerebral chromomycosis.

A 52-year-old man was admitted to the hospital with headache, confusion, and early papilledema. He was receiving prednisone and azathioprine for interstitial pulmonary fibrosis. A right temporoparietal cerebral abscess was diagnosed by computed tomographic scan, brain scan, and cerebral angiography. Fungal cultures of pus obtained at operation grew a pigmented fungus, Cladosporium trichoides. Three additional abscesses were found in the right cerebellar hemisphere at autopsy after the patient died of an unrelated cause. Chromomycosis occurring at sites other than skin is extremely rare. No les

Intracranial complications of chronic suppurative otitis media in children.

UNLABELLED: In spite of significant decrease after antibiotic advent, intracranial complications of otitis media still represent a challenging situation owing to its high mortality rate (36%). The most common presentations are meningitis, cerebral abscess, extradural abscess and lateral sinus thrombophlebitis. For early management, it is necessary to have a high index of suspicion. It is important to identify non-typical cases because they might be masqueraded by antibiotic use. AIM: We present six cases of intracranial complications due to otitis media in children and adolescents at Complexo

Investigating the in-vitro antimicrobial activities of sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] phenolic extracts on liver abscess causing bacterial pathogens.

INTRODUCTION: Liver abscesses that occur in finishing cattle fed high-grain, low-roughage diets, are of significant economic concern to the feedlot industry. The causative agents include both Fusobacterium necrophorum subspecies (necrophorum and funduliforme), Trueperella pyogenes, and Salmonella enterica serotype Lubbock. Tylosin, a macrolide antibiotic, is supplemented in the feed to reduce liver abscesses. Because of the concern with emergence of potential antimicrobial resistance, there is a need to find antibiotic alternatives. The aim of our study was to investigate the efficacy of pheno

Diagnostic Algorithm for Intracranial Lesions in the Emergency Department: Effectiveness of the Relative Brain Volume and Hounsfield Unit Value Measured by Perfusion Tomography.

Background Early treatment of intracranial lesions in the emergency department is crucial, but it can be challenging to differentiate between them. This differentiation is essential because the treatment of each type of lesion is different. Cerebral computed tomography perfusion (CTP) imaging can help visualize the vascularity of brain lesions and provide absolute quantification of physiological parameters. Compared to magnetic resonance imaging, CTP has several advantages, such as simplicity, wide availability, and reproducibility. Purpose This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of Houns

Long-term survival in a dog with meningoencephalitis and epidural abscessation due to Actinomyces species.

A 2-year-old, female spayed Golden Retriever dog was presented to The Ohio State University Veterinary Medical Center for evaluation of ataxia, cervical pain, 1 episode of acute collapse, dull mentation, and inappetence. Physical examination revealed an elevated temperature of 39.7°C and severe cervical pain. Blood work revealed a mature neutrophilia. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis revealed nondegenerative neutrophilic pleocytosis with no infectious agents. A presumptive diagnosis of steroid-responsive meningitis-arteritis was made, and corticosteroid therapy was started. The patient impro

Anatomic predictors of neurologic complications in solitary pulmonary arteriovenous malformations: a multicenter CT-based analysis.

OBJECTIVES: To identify clinical and imaging predictors of symptomatic neurologic complications in patients with solitary pulmonary arteriovenous malformations (PAVMs). MATERIALS AND METHODS: This multicenter retrospective study included 207 patients with solitary, untreated PAVMs diagnosed by CT between 2004 and 2020. Patients were categorized into neurologic and control groups based on the presence or absence of symptomatic neurologic complications (ischemic stroke or brain abscess) at the time of PAVM diagnosis, with transient ischemic attacks excluded. Of the 207 patients, 36 were in the …

Diagnosis of central nervous system invasive aspergillosis in a liver transplant recipient using microbial cell-free next generation DNA sequencing.

Invasive aspergillosis (IA) is an important opportunistic infection among patients with liver disease and liver transplants. Diagnosis of IA may be challenging, especially among patients with central nervous system infection. Herein, we demonstrate the utility of next-generation sequencing of microbial cell-free DNA in the diagnosis of fungal brain abscess in a liver transplant recipient.
