[Molecular characterization of autochthonous clinical isolates of Histoplasma capsulatum var. capsulatum using RAPD-PCR].

The aim of our work was to determine the genotypic relatedness among H. capsulatum isolates from Argentinian patients with or without AIDS and isolates from other sources and geographic origins. We analyzed band patterns of 16 isolates obtained by RAPD-PCR, 11 Argentinian clinical isolates (8 from patients with AIDS and 3 from patients without AIDS), 2 strains from the CDC, 2 isolates from Mexico and one isolate from Uruguay. With the band patterns obtained, we built a dendrogram, which showed 3 major groups. Group I contained 2 isolates from Mexico, group II 1 strain from CDC and group III in

Trypanosomatids in Costa Rican Bats: First Molecular Evidence of the Leishmania (Viannia) guyanensis Complex and Evidence of a Broader Host Association for Trypanosoma minasense.

PURPOSE: Molecular data on wildlife trypanosomatids in Central America remain limited, constraining our understanding of host associations and sylvatic transmission cycles in the region. We characterized Leishmania and Trypanosoma infections in Costa Rican bats and assessed contemporary circulation of Trypanosoma minasense in howler monkeys within a comparative phylogenetic framework. METHODS: Whole blood from 98 bats across 11 Costa Rican localities (2013–2014) was screened by PCR for Leishmania kDNA (120 bp), ITS-1 (~ 330 bp), and Trypanosoma 18 S SSU rRNA (nested PCR) with species-level ide

Unusual G3P[10] bat-like rotavirus strains detected in children with acute gastroenteritis in Thailand.

Rotavirus A (RVA) is the main cause of acute gastroenteritis among children under the age of five globally. The unusual bat-like human RVA strains G3P[10] (RVA/Human-wt/THA/CMH079/05/2005/G3P[10] and RVA/Human-wt/THA/CMH-S015-19/2019/G3P[10]) were detected in children with acute gastroenteritis in 2005 and 2019, respectively, in the same geographical area of Northern Thailand. To elucidate the genetic backgrounds of these unusual or bat-like human RVA strains, the complete genome of these RVA strains was sequenced and phylogenetically analyzed. All eleven genome segments of these G3P[10] strai

Can ACE2 Receptor Polymorphism Predict Species Susceptibility to SARS-CoV-2?

A novel severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, emerged in China in December 2019 and spread worldwide, causing more than 1.3 million deaths in 11 months. Similar to the human SARS-CoV, SARS-CoV-2 shares strong sequence homologies with a sarbecovirus circulating in Rhinolophus affinis bats. Because bats are expected to be able to transmit their coronaviruses to intermediate animal hosts that in turn are a source of viruses able to cross species barriers and infect humans (so-called spillover model), the identification of an intermediate animal reservoir was the subject of in

Can melatonin reduce the severity of COVID-19 pandemic?

The current COVID-19 pandemic is one of the most devastating events in recent history. The virus causes relatively minor damage to young, healthy populations, imposing life-threatening danger to the elderly and people with diseases of chronic inflammation. Therefore, if we could reduce the risk for vulnerable populations, it would make the COVID-19 pandemic more similar to other typical outbreaks. Children don't suffer from COVID-19 as much as their grandparents and have a much higher melatonin level. Bats are nocturnal animals possessing high levels of melatonin, which may contribute to their

Viral Metagenomic Profiling of Croatian Bat Population Reveals Sample and Habitat Dependent Diversity.

To date, the microbiome, as well as the virome of the Croatian populations of bats, was unknown. Here, we present the results of the first viral metagenomic analysis of guano, feces and saliva (oral swabs) of seven bat species (Myotis myotis, Miniopterus schreibersii, Rhinolophus ferrumequinum, Eptesicus serotinus, Myotis blythii, Myotis nattereri and Myotis emarginatus) conducted in Mediterranean and continental Croatia. Viral nucleic acids were extracted from sample pools, and analyzed using Illumina sequencing. The presence of 63 different viral families representing all seven Baltimore gro

Characterization of a novel species of adenovirus from Japanese microbat and role of CXADR as its entry factor.

Recently, bat adenoviruses (BtAdVs) of genus Mastadenovirus have been isolated from various bat species, some of them displaying a wide host range in cell culture. In this study, we isolated two BtAdVs from Japanese wild microbats. While one isolate was classified as Bat mastadenovirus A, the other was phylogenetically independent of other BtAdVs. It was rather related to, but serologically different from, canine adenoviruses. We propose that the latter, isolated from Asian parti-colored bat, should be assigned to a novel species of Bat mastadenovirus. Both isolates replicated in various mamma

Flexible foraging strategies in Pipistrellus pygmaeus in response to abundant but ephemeral prey.

There is growing recognition that with sympathetic management, plantation forests may contain more biodiversity than previously thought. However, the extent to which they may support bat populations is contentious. Many studies have demonstrated active avoidance of coniferous plantations and attributed this to the lack of available roost sites and low invertebrate density. In contrast, other work, carried out in plantation dominated landscapes have shown that certain bat species are able to exploit these areas. However, the extent to which bats use plantations for roosting and foraging, or sim

New Adenovirus Groups in Western Palaearctic Bats.

In the context of long-term screening for viruses on Western Palaearctic bats, we tested for the presence of adenovirus 1392 oropharyngeal swabs and 325 stool samples taken from 27 bat species. Adenoviruses were detected in 12 species of the Vespertilionidae and the Rhinolophidae families. Fifty positive respiratory and 26 positive stool samples were studied. Phylogenetic analyses of partial hexon protein and partial DNA-dependent DNA polymerase genes indicate that all these bat adenoviruses belong to the genus Mastadenovirus but without constituting a monophyletic cluster. According to geneti

Assessing the potential impacts of a changing climate on the distribution of a rabies virus vector.

Common vampire bats (Desmodus rotundus) occur throughout much of South America to northern México. Vampire bats have not been documented in recent history in the United States, but have been documented within about 50 km of the U.S. state of Texas. Vampire bats feed regularly on the blood of mammals and can transmit rabies virus to native species and livestock, causing impacts on the health of prey. Thus cattle producers, wildlife management agencies, and other stakeholders have expressed concerns about whether vampire bats might spread into the southern United States. On the other hand, conce

Pathogenic Leptospira spp. in bats: Molecular investigation in Southern Brazil.

The present study aimed to investigate the frequency of pathogenic Leptospira spp. in Brazilian bats and to determine possible risk factors associated to it. Ninety two bats of 12 species were evaluated. Whole genomic DNA from kidneys was extracted and real-time PCR specific to pathogenic Leptospira spp. was applied. Association between the frequency of specimens positive for Leptospira spp. and sex, age, bat species or family, season of collection, geographic localization and feeding habits was evaluated. The results showed that 39.13% of analyzed bats were found positive for Leptospira spp.

The NS1 gene from bat-derived influenza-like virus H17N10 can be rescued in influenza A PR8 backbone.

Influenza A viruses have the potential to cause pandemics due to the introduction of novel subtypes against which human hosts have little or no preexisting immunity. Such viruses may result from reassortment between human and animal influenza viruses. Recently, new influenza-like viruses were identified in bats, raising the concern for a new reservoir of potentially harmful influenza viruses that could form reassortants with categorized human influenza A viruses. However, until now, it has not been possible to generate a recombinant reassortant virus containing a single functional gene or doma

Fluorescent antibody test, quantitative polymerase chain reaction pattern and clinical aspects of rabies virus strains isolated from main reservoirs in Brazil.

Rabies virus (RABV) isolated from different mammals seems to have unique characteristics that influence the outcome of infection. RABV circulates in nature and is maintained by reservoirs that are responsible for the persistence of the disease for almost 4000 years. Considering the different pattern of pathogenicity of RABV strains in naturally and experimentally infected animals, the aim of this study was to analyze the characteristics of RABV variants isolated from the main Brazilian reservoirs, being related to a dog (variant 2), Desmodus rotundus (variant 3), crab eating fox, marmoset, and

Sensory ecology of water detection by bats: a field experiment.

Bats face a great risk of dehydration, so sensory mechanisms for water recognition are crucial for their survival. In the laboratory, bats recognized any smooth horizontal surface as water because these provide analogous reflections of echolocation calls. We tested whether bats also approach smooth horizontal surfaces other than water to drink in nature by partly covering watering troughs used by hundreds of bats with a Perspex layer mimicking water. We aimed 1) to confirm that under natural conditions too bats mistake any horizontal smooth surface for water by testing this on large numbers of

Fear conditioned discrimination of frequency modulated sweeps within species-specific calls of mustached bats.

Social and echolocation vocalizations of bats contain different patterns of frequency modulations. An adult bat's ability to discriminate between various FM parameters, however, is not well established. Using changes in heart rate (HR) as a quantitative measure of associative learning, we demonstrate that mustached bats (Pteronotus parnellii) can be fear conditioned to linear frequency modulated (FM) sweeps typically centered at their acoustic fovea (approximately 60 kHz). We also show that HR is sensitive to a change in the direction of the conditional frequency modulation keeping all other p

Bartonella spp. in bats, Kenya.

We report the presence and diversity of Bartonella spp. in bats of 13 insectivorous and frugivorous species collected from various locations across Kenya. Bartonella isolates were obtained from 23 Eidolon helvum, 22 Rousettus aegyptiacus, 4 Coleura afra, 7 Triaenops persicus, 1 Hipposideros commersoni, and 49 Miniopterus spp. bats. Sequence analysis of the citrate synthase gene from the obtained isolates showed a wide assortment of Bartonella strains. Phylogenetically, isolates clustered in specific host bat species. All isolates from R. aegyptiacus, C. afra, and T. persicus bats clustered in

First isolation of EBLV-2 in Germany.

In Europe, rabies in bats is caused by European Bat Lyssavirus (EBLV) type 1 (EBLV-1) or type 2 (EBLV-2) which form two distinct genotypes (gt 5 and 6) within the genus Lyssavirus of the family of Rhadoviridae. Spill-over infections of EBLV in humans have caused fatal rabies encephalitis and highlighted the relevance of this wildlife disease for public health. The vast majority of the 831 European bat rabies cases reported between 1977 and 2006 were identified as EBLV-1. Only few virus isolates originating from Switzerland, The Netherlands and the United Kingdom were characterized as EBLV-2. H

Epidemiology of bat rabies in Germany.

Rabies in European bats was first reported in Germany in 1954. In concordance with Denmark and the Netherlands, Germany has reported one of the highest numbers (n = 187) of European bat lyssavirus (EBLV)-positive cases in bats in Europe so far (1954-2005). A combined descriptive epidemiological and phylogenetic analysis on bat rabies and prevailing EBLVs is presented, comprising the past 50 years. So far, only the two lineages of EBLV-1 (genotype 5), a and b, have been detected. Although only 50% of the rabies-positive bats have been identified by species, the Serotine bat (Eptesicus serotinus
