Novel technology for treating individuals with aphasia and concomitant cognitive deficits.

PURPOSE: This article describes three individuals with aphasia and concomitant cognitive deficits who used state-of-theart computer software for training conversational scripts. METHOD: Participants were assessed before and after 9 weeks of a computer script training program. For each participant, three individualized scripts were developed, recorded on the software, and practiced sequentially at home. Weekly meetings with the speech-language pathologist occurred to monitor practice and assess progress. Baseline and posttreatment scripts were audiotaped, transcribed, and compared to the targe

A virtual reality system for the assessment and rehabilitation of the activities of daily living.

Successful rehabilitation with respect to the activities of daily living (ADL) requires accurate and effective assessment and training. A number of studies have emphasized the requirement for rehabilitation methods that are both relevant to the patient's real world environment, and that can also be transferred to other daily living tasks. Virtual reality (VR) has many advantages over other ADL rehabilitation techniques, and offers the potential to develop a human performance testing and training environment. Therefore, in this study, the virtual supermarket was developed and the possibility of

Municipal implementation of community-based preventive programs during the COVID-19 pandemic and long-term care certification trends in Japan: a nationwide ecological analysis.

BACKGROUND: The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic disrupted community-based preventive services for older adults. However, population- … rograms planned for FY2020 across five prevention domains: physical activity, social participation, cognitive training, nutrition, and health check-ups. Collapsed difference-in-differences models compared changes in certification rates from the pre-pandemic period (FY2018-2019) to the pandemic (FY2020-2021) and post-pandemic (FY2022-2023) periods. Eight weeks of visual perturbation training effects on unanticipated cutting lower-limb biomechanics and errors in male athletes following anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction: a randomized controlled clinical trial (RCT).

BACKGROUND: Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears are among the most common knee injuries, leading to joint instability, muscle weakness, and disrupted motor coordination. The neuromuscular consequences of ACL injury extend beyond the joint and surrounding musculature and also involve reorganization of the central nervous system. Current return-to-sport training protocols may not adequately restore subtle neuromuscular deficits associated with ACL injury neuroplasticity. Specifically, impaired neuromuscular control under visual or cognitive perturbations. These neuromuscular deficits are espe

Wearable eye-tracking of visuomotor strategies in table tennis players of diverse expertise and cognitive function in a naturalistic environment.

Understanding how gaze behaviour and visuomotor control vary across populations is crucial for optimizing performance and training in fast-paced sports. However, studies involving athletes with cognitive disabilities remain limited, particularly in naturalistic environments. This study employed wearable eye-tracking technology to examine gaze behaviour and oculomotor control in table tennis players of differing skill levels and cognitive profiles. Forty-six participants were grouped as Professional athletes, Amateur players, individuals with Down syndrome (DS), or intellectual disabilities (ID

Prism adaptation combined with serious games for improving visual-constructive abilities in stroke patients: randomized clinical trial.

INTRODUCTION: Visuomotor adaptation to a displacement of the visual field induced by prismatic lenses can help rehabilitate cognitive deficits when combined with digital cognitive training. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of this approach in rehabilitating visual constructive deficits in stroke patients, assess the generalization of improvements to daily living skills, identify which serious games best predicted improvements. METHODS: Thirty stroke patients were randomly assigned to either a control group, receiving standard rehabilitation, or an experimental group, re…

Towards tacit knowledge mining within context: Visual cognitive graph model and eye movement image interpretation.

Visual attention is one of the most important brain cognitive functions, which filters the rich information of the outside world to ensure the efficient operation of limited cognitive resources. The underlying knowledge, i.e., tacit knowledge, hidden in the human attention allocation performances, is context-related and is hard to be expressed by experts, but it is essential for novice operator training and interaction system design. Traditional models of visual attention allocation and corresponding analysis methods seldomly involve task contextual information or present the tacit knowledge i

Memory Flexibility training (MemFlex) to reduce depressive symptomatology in individuals with major depressive disorder: study protocol for a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is associated with chronic biases in the allocation of attention and recollection of personal memories. Impaired flexibility in attention and autobiographical memory retrieval is seen to both maintain current symptoms and predict future depression. Development of innovative interventions to reduce maladaptive cognitive patterns and improve cognitive flexibility in the domain of memory may therefore advance current treatment approaches for depression. Memory specificity training and cognitive bias modification techniques have both shown some promise i

Attention training for reducing spider fear in spider-fearful individuals.

Cognitive theorists propose that attentional biases for threatening information play an important role in the development and maintenance of anxiety disorders. If attentional biases for threat figure in the maintenance of anxiety, then the experimental reduction of the bias for threat (attention training) should reduce anxiety. We randomly assigned 41 spider-fearful individuals to receive either attention training (n=20) or control procedures (n=21). We used a modified dot-probe discrimination paradigm with photographs of spiders and cows to train attention. Training reduced attentional bias f

Treatment of cognitive impairment in patients with multiple sclerosis.

INTRODUCTION: Identifying and treating cognitive impairment in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) is increasingly recognized as a crucial step in selecting the most appropriate treatment for the individual. Currently, the neuropsychological tests used to assess patients are time-consuming and require specialist training to administer; consequently, cognitive impairment in MS is underdiagnosed. Many treatments are available for MS, including disease-modifying drugs (DMDs) and symptomatic therapies, but what are their effects on cognitive performance? AREAS COVERED: This article will review

A treadmill training program in a gamified virtual reality environment combined with transcranial direct current stimulation in Parkinson's Disease: Preliminary results of a mixed methods randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Gait impairments in Parkinson's disease (PD) worsen under cognitive load and often persist despite medication. Combining treadmill training with gamified virtual reality environments (GVRE) and transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) may address both motor and cognitive contributors. This study evaluated the effects and experiences of a cognitive-motor gait training program integrating GVRE and tDCS. METHODS: In this mixed-methods RCT, 23 participants with mild-to-moderate PD were randomized to: (1) treadmill (n = 8), (2) treadmill+GVRE (n = 8), or (3) treadmill+GVRE+tDCS (

Fasted-State Aerobic Exercise Enhances Cognition and Hippocampal BDNF Signaling in an Alzheimer's Disease Rat Model.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a multifactorial disorder that demands a comprehensive management strategy. Both aerobic exercise training and intermittent fasting (IF) have been shown to ameliorate AD symptoms, yet the impact of exercise in the fasted state remains understudied. This study compared the effects of four weeks of moderate‑intensity treadmill running in either a fasted or a normal fed state on cognitive function and hippocampal BDNF signaling in an amyloid-β (Aβ)1-42-injected rat model of AD. Twenty‑month‑old male Wistar rats were allocated into five groups (n = 12 each): AD, AD plus

Mismatch negativity reveals plasticity in cortical dynamics after 1-hour of auditory training exercises.

BACKGROUND: Impaired sensory processing contributes to deficits in cognitive and psychosocial functioning in individuals with schizophrenia (SZ). Mismatch Negativity (MMN), an event-related potential (ERP) index of sensory discrimination associated with cognitive and psychosocial functioning, is a candidate biomarker of auditory discrimination and thus possibly of changes following auditory-based Targeted Cognitive Training (TCT). Here we evaluated the acute effect of TCT on cortical processes supporting auditory discrimination. METHODS: MMN was assessed in 28 SZ outpatients before and after …

Effect of Working Memory Updating Training on Retrieving Symptoms of Children With Learning Disabilities.

Working memory (WM) deficiency is a primary reason for the poor academic performance of children with learning disabilities (LDs). Studies have shown that the WM of typical children could be improved through training, and WM training contributes to improving their fluid intelligence and academic achievement. However, few studies have investigated WM training for children with LDs, and results have been inconsistent. The present study examined the long-term effects of WM updating training and whether it can mitigate LD symptoms. Fifty-four children with LDs were recruited and divided randomly i

Additive and interaction effects of working memory and motor sequence training on brain functional connectivity.

Although shared behavioral and neural mechanisms between working memory (WM) and motor sequence learning (MSL) have been suggested, the additive and interactive effects of training have not been studied. This study aimed at investigating changes in brain functional connectivity (FC) induced by sequential (WM + MSL and MSL + WM) and combined (WM × MSL) training programs. 54 healthy subjects (27 women; mean age: 30.2 ± 8.6 years) allocated to three training groups underwent twenty-four 40-min training sessions over 6 weeks and four cognitive assessments including functional MRI. Biomarkers for Early Diagnostic of Mild Cognitive Impairment in Type-2 Diabetes Patients: A Multicentre, Retrospective, Nested Case-Control Study.

BACKGROUND: Both type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and Alzheimer's disease (AD) are common age-associated disorders and T2DM patients show an increased risk to suffer from AD, however, there is currently no marker to identify who in T2DM populations will develop AD. Since glycogen synthase kinase-3β (GSK-3β) activity, ApoE genotypes and olfactory function are involved in both T2DM and AD pathogenesis, we investigate whether alterations of these factors can identify cognitive impairment in T2DM patients. METHODS: The cognitive ability was evaluated using Minimum Mental State Examination (MMSE) a
