Curating a knowledge base for patients with neurosyphilis: a study protocol of a DEep learning Framework for pErsonalized prediction of Adverse prognosTic events in NeuroSyphilis (DEFEAT-NS).

INTRODUCTION: Adverse prognostic events (APE) of neurosyphilis include ongoing syphilitic meningitis, meningovascular syphilis, parenchymatous neurosyphilis and death. Its complexity and rarity have the potential to result in the underestimated true burden of neurosyphilis worldwide, due to lack of recognition and under-reporting. The unmet need for a modern method of refined and targeted treatment of neurosyphilis is strengthened by the currently various distinct diagnostic criteria. The DEep learning Framework for pErsonalized prediction of Adverse prognosTic events in NeuroSyphilis study wi

Head and Neck Paraganglioma (HNPGL) Registry: A study protocol for prospective data collection in patients with Head and Neck Paragangliomas.

INTRODUCTION: There is a lack of comprehensive and uniform data on head and neck paragangliomas (HNPGLs), and research is challenging due to its rarity and the involvement of multiple medical specialties. To improve current research data collection, we initiated the Head and Neck Paraganglioma Registry (HNPGL Registry). The aim of the HNPGL Registry is to a) collect extensive data on all HNPGL patients through a predefined protocol, b) give insight in the long term outcomes using patient reported outcome measures (PROMs), c) create uniformity in the diagnostic and clinical management of these

To compare horizontal strabismus deviation as assessed from photographs with that in the strabismus clinic using the prism bar.

PURPOSE: To compare the deviation in cases of horizontal strabismus as assessed from photographs with the measurements as obtained in the strabismus clinic. METHODS: After obtaining informed consent, we recruited subjects with manifest horizontal strabismus. We took a frontal flash photograph from a distance of 50 cm using smart-phone-based cameras with the flash light vertically aligned with the lens. After projecting the photograph on a laptop and using a vernier caliper, we measured the horizontal corneal diameter of the non-strabismic eye and the decentration of reflex in the strabismic e

Towards agreement amongst parents, teachers and children on perceived psychopathology in children in a Kenyan socio-cultural context: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Our objective was to determine levels of agreement between parents, teachers and children on mental symptoms in the children. Teachers, children and parents constitute the TRIAD in the perception of psychopathology in children. Analyzing the perceptions of psychopathology from the perspectives of parents, teachers, and children is essential for a comprehensive understanding of a child's mental health. METHODS: We identified 195 participants across ten randomly sampled primary schools in South East Kenya. Potential participants were randomly selected and a sampling interval calcula

Advancing vascularized composite allotransplantation: essential factors for upper extremity transplant program development.

Vascularized Composite Allotransplantation (VCA) offers a unique option to restore form and function after limb loss or facial trauma that cannot be satisfactorily accomplished through traditional prosthetics or reconstructions. Establishing a successful Upper Extremity Transplantation (UET) program requires strong leadership and a structured surgical team, and extensive interdisciplinary collaboration. We conducted a qualitative study among 12 health care professionals and patients. Informed consent was obtained per protocol, and semi-structured interviews were conducted online and recorded.

Effectiveness of an evidence-based swallowing facilitation strategy for patients undergoing radiotherapy for head and neck cancer: a study protocol for a randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Dysphagia emerges as a frequent, persistent and enduring aftermath in individuals undergoing radiotherapy for head and neck cancer (HNC). Timely intervention becomes imperative to ameliorate prolonged dysphagia and curtail related complications. Among the evidence-grounded tactics, preventive swallowing training and proficient feeding management stand out as pivotal measures for precluding and mitigating dysphagia. However, past inquiries that amalgamated these dual interventions exhibited heterogeneous quality due to their restricted participant cohorts and a dearth of uniform,

Epidemiology of chronic and acute pancreatitis in India (EPICAP-India): protocol for a multicentre study.

INTRODUCTION: Acute and chronic pancreatitis (CP) are inflammatory conditions of the pancreas that cause local and systemic complications. The epidemiology of these conditions are not well-known in India. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: We describe the protocol and procedures of a multicentre study for delineating the epidemiology of pancreatitis in India. We plan to cover 110 000 people across 10 geographically distributed sites in 10 states of India to estimate the burden and risk factors of CP. Trained investigators will make house visits and screen for abdominal pain requiring hospitalisation or pr

Repair of complex esophageal atresia with tracheobronchial remnant using special magnets.

Esophageal atresia (EA) repair can be complicated by associated malformations such as a tracheobronchial remnant in the distal esophagus. We describe our experience with a patient found to have long-gap EA with a distal cartilaginous ring who was managed using a combination of esophageal lengthening and magnetic compression anastomosis. A 5-month-old girl was referred to us from an outside hospital with type C EA including a very high upper pouch. She had undergone a prior thoracotomy with fistula ligation during which a clip was placed on the lower esophagus, leaving a 2-cm diverticulum on th

Study protocol for two randomised controlled trials evaluating the effects of Cerclage in the reduction of extreme preterm birth and perinatal mortality in twin pregnancies with a short cervix or dilatation: the TWIN Cerclage studies.

INTRODUCTION: Twin pregnancies have a high risk of extreme preterm birth (PTB) at less than 28 weeks of gestation, which is associated with increased risk of neonatal morbidity and mortality. Currently there is a lack of effective treatments for women with a twin pregnancy and a short cervix or cervical dilatation. A possible effective surgical method to reduce extreme PTB in twin pregnancies with an asymptomatic short cervix or dilatation at midpregnancy is the placement of a vaginal cerclage. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: We designed two multicentre randomised trials involving eight hospitals in th

Leishmaniases in Ethiopia: a scoping review protocol to determine the scope of research and remaining gaps.

INTRODUCTION: The leishmaniases are among the group of neglected tropical diseases that cause significant morbidity and mortality each year. Currently, the East Africa region has the highest visceral leishmaniasis burden in the world. Ethiopia is one of the East African countries that reports both visceral and cutaneous forms of the disease. As part of the Nairobi Declaration, Ethiopia showed commitment to the elimination of visceral leishmaniasis by 2030. In this endeavour, it is important to understand the scope of research conducted on leishmaniases in the country and identify where the res

Impact of tobacco smoking and alcohol consumption on the treatment efficacy among psoriasis patients: A study protocol.

Psoriasis is a common skin disease. With an in-depth understanding of psoriasis, small-molecule drugs and biologics are developed and used in clinical practice, but some patients still cannot achieve a satisfactory therapeutic effect. Tobacco smoking and alcohol drinking are proven to be factors affecting psoriasis. Still, evidence of the impact of tobacco smoking and alcohol consumption on the efficacy of psoriasis treatment is limited. This study aims to understand the prevalence of tobacco smoking and alcohol drinking among patients with psoriasis in Shanghai and to examine the association

Digoxin for the Management of Unstable Paroxysmal Supraventricular Tachycardia in a Patient Who Refused Electrical Cardioversion in a Rural Hospital.

BACKGROUND: The most frequent atrioventricular tachycardia in the emergency room is atrioventricular nodal reentrant tachycardia (AVNRT). The first treatment option for ending stable narrow QRS complex SVTs is vagal maneuvers and adenosine. When adenosine or vagal maneuvers fail to change a patient's rhythm to normal sinus rhythm, long-acting AV nodal-blocking medications, including nondihydropyridine calcium channel blockers (verapamil and diltiazem), flecainide, or beta-blockers, are employed. Electricity (synchronized cardioversion) is the preferred form of treatment for unstable patients.

Interaction of CCND2, CDKN1A, and POLD3 Variants in Mexican Patients with Colorectal Cancer.

BACKGROUND: Colorectal cancer is the second cause of death by cancer around the world. Sporadic colorectal cancer is the most frequent (75%), and it is produced by the interaction of environmental, epigenetic, and genetic factors. The accumulation of single-nucleotide variants in genes associated with cell proliferation, DNA repair, and/or apoptosis could confer a risk to cancer. The aim of this study was to analyze the gene-gene interactions among CCND2 (rs3217901), CDKN1A (rs1059234 and rs1801270), and POLD3 (rs3824999) variants in Mexican patients with colorectal cancer.
