Linguistic equity: Anatomy educators and inclusive language.

Incorporating inclusive language in healthcare education allows learners to develop holistic communication skills. Adhering to principles of linguistic equity in healthcare, specific to sex- and gender-inclusive language (SGIL), creates a safe environment for all participants. Anatomy education introduces students to a standard, consistent language used in healthcare. This report presents data from the 2022 Experimental Biology conference roundtable discussion regarding the use of SGIL in anatomy education. Most of the respondents had defined sex (i.e. male/female; 83%) and gender (i.e. man/wo

Educators' experience and guide to scaffolding generative AI applications throughout a physiology and pharmacology undergraduate laboratory course.

One of the identified points of confusion and a barrier to students using generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) is knowing what their professor would consider appropriate use of GenAI in a classroom setting or course framework. This creates points of friction for instructors and students as they try to navigate an ever-changing landscape, while trying to ensure work readiness skills for students. This includes the development of GenAI literacy, prompt engineering as related to physiology and research, and critical thinking skills. In this paper, we suggest an innovative, two-pronged appro

To disrupt the traditional compartmentalized learning of nutrition functions, a proposition for integrative teaching at undergraduate level.

Rather than an anatomy-centered study of the nutrition functions of the body (circulation, respiration, food digestion, and intestinal absorption of nutrients) as found in undergraduate physiology textbooks, a more integrative, mechanistic approach to teaching human physiology at the undergraduate level in science faculties is presented. Starting from the cell's needs for nutrients and oxygen, this proposal highlights the way in which each organ or apparatus ensures cell function. Then the fundamental physiological concepts of structure-function relationships and matter gradients can be constr

Health promotion: reconfiguring nurses' practice to reduce social inequalities.

Inequalities in people's health due to economic or social circumstances remain a persistent challenge in the UK, with people from disadvantaged communities disproportionately likely to die earlier and experience more health issues than the general population. Health promotion has a vital role in reversing health inequalities and requires a focus on structural and political-level determinants of health, rather than individuals' lifestyle choices. However, while health promotion is a significant aspect of nurse education curricula, individual nurses may experience role confusion regarding the ap

The impact of Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer (ChatGPT) on medical education.

Artificial intelligence (AI) in medicine is developing rapidly. The advent of Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer (ChatGPT) has taken the world by storm with its potential uses and efficiencies. However, technology leaders, researchers, educators, and policy makers have also sounded the alarm on its potential harms and unintended consequences. AI will increasingly find its way into medicine and is a force of both disruption and innovation. We discuss the potential benefits and limitations of this new league of technology and how medical educators have to develop skills and curricula to bes

Examination performance with flipped classroom as instructional strategy in the carbohydrate metabolism course unit at a Philippine medical school: Estimation of average treatment effect from observational data.

While the innovativeness of the flipped classroom (FC) approach promotes active participation and higher-order thinking among students, there are concerns about its effectiveness in terms of knowledge retention. Currently, there are no studies involving medical school biochemistry that evaluate this aspect of effectiveness. Thus, we conducted a historical control study that analyzed observational data from two freshman batches of the Doctor of Medicine program in our institution. Class 2021 (n = 250) served as the traditional lecture (TL) group while Class 2022 (n = 264) served as the FC group
