Renal cysts are fluid-filled cavities with an epithelial lining that, depending on their size, can cause clinical symptoms and thus require conservative or surgical therapy. Nephrectomy is primarily used in cattle for simple kidney cysts while sclerotherapy is well established in humans and individual case reports have been published in small animal medicine. This case report describes the first successful treatment of a solitary, perirenal cyst using a right-sided laparotomy and intraluminal instillation of 96% ethanol solution in a Swiss Fleckvieh cow. Diagnostics, surgical procedures and af

Splenic abscess is a rare disease that generally occurs in immunocompromised patients. It is difficult to distinguish between splenic abscesses and cysts using imaging studies, especially if they are asymptomatic. A 50-year-old asymptomatic man who had received steroid therapy for underlying rheumatoid arthritis was referred to a university hospital due to presence of several splenic cysts, with the largest being 3.5 cm in diameter. Percutaneous aspiration was performed, and fluid analysis showed cysts infected by extended-spectrum, beta-lactamase-producing Escherichia coli. The patient was tr

Intraventricular rupture of craniopharyngioma cysts is an unusual event which is associated with a high risk of loculated or communicating hydrocephalus. A 75-year-old woman presented at the Emergency Department of our hospital with mental status deterioration due to chemical ventriculitis and acute hydrocephalus following the intraventricular rupture of a craniopharyngioma cyst. The patient was treated with stress-dose steroid therapy. In addition, she underwent placement of an external ventricular drain and endoscopy-assisted intra-cystic placement of an Ommaya reservoir for the aspiration o

BACKGROUND: The management of intra- and paraventricular lesions is one of the fields in which modern neuroendoscopic techniques have given the most significant contribution in terms of reduction in operative invasiveness and postoperative complications. In this context, fluid cysts represent an ideal ground on which results obtained with traditional surgical procedures (open surgery, shunting) have more and more to compare with the increasing number of encouraging results obtained by neuroendoscopy.
OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to retrospectively evaluate the results of the end

A 7 yr old female spayed Canaan dog was presented for evaluation of a subclinical intrathoracic mass noted during meta-static staging for a digit and lingual mass. Thoracic ultrasound and computed tomography revealed a 6.0 × 5.5 cm mass within the cranial mediastinum. The mass was septated with mixed fluid and soft-tissue structures and no evidence of vascular invasion. Narrow excision of the mass via a sternal thoracotomy was performed. Histopathology of the mass was consistent with a thyroglossal duct cyst adenocarcinoma. This is the first reported case of a thyroglossal duct cyst adenocarci

A 12-year-old girl presented with complaints of headache, lethargy, photophobia, and fever. Cerebrospinal fluid examination revealed bacterial meningitis. Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging showed a cystic lesion with peripheral enhancement in the pituitary fossa. The patient underwent transnasal-transsphenoidal surgery (TSS). The diagnosis was pituitary abscess associated with Rathke's cleft cyst. Postoperatively, the patient recovered rapidly. However, recurrence of the pituitary abscess causing meningitis occurred four times and required repeated TSS. She had diabetes insipidus and received ho

We report two patients with giant cystic craniopharyngiomas approached transsphenoidally, with continuous cyst drainage through a silastic tube, connecting the cyst with the sphenoid sinus. An innovative technique for fixation of the tube and reconstruction of the sphenoid sinus is presented which consists of the use of a combination of silk, resin and calcium carbonate. Postoperatively, although both patients developed diabetes insipidus, both patients improved neurologically. At follow-up examinations (32 and 48 months), neither patient had migration of the silastic tube, evidence of meningi

A 30-year-old woman had an arachnoid cyst in the trigone of the right lateral ventricle 5 years before she developed episodic auditory and visual hallucinations as well as delusions of persecution. The psychotic episodes tended to occur after the patient had lain in bed for 1 to 2 hours. After craniotomy and wide excision of the cystic membrane, draining the cystic fluid to the lateral ventricle, the psychotic episodes subsided in a follow-up period of 6 months. We believe that when the patient was recumbent, the trigone cyst blocked the temporal horn further, caused local ischemia, and trigge

INTRODUCTION: Arachnoid cysts are benign cerebrospinal fluid collection within a duplication of arachnoid membrane and, when found in the retrocerebellar site, they may be associated with tonsils herniation. This rare situation of coexisting retrocerebellar arachnoid cyst (AC) and Chiari malformation type 1 (CM-1) have been previously reported in few cases (10 patients) with syringomyelia and hydrocephalus described to be the most relevant issues. The aim of this paper is to describe 3 pediatric cases of this condition with a systematic review of the literature, underlining the importance of s

BACKGROUND: Follistatin is an activin-binding protein produced by several tissues, including endometrium and endometriotic implants. We aimed to quantify follistatin in patients with ovarian endometriosis and investigate its value as a diagnostic marker.
METHODS: Women undergoing laparoscopic excision of ovarian endometrioma (n = 52) or other benign ovarian cysts (n = 52) were studied, plus women with non-ovarian endometriosis (n = 11) and healthy controls (n = 27). Serum was collected from all subjects, and peritoneal and cystic fluid from a subset with endometrioma. Follistatin was measured

Mesenteric cysts are rare, benign tumors more commonly found in children than adults, accounting for 1 in 250 000 hospital admissions. Chylolymphatic mesenteric cysts arise from ectopic lymphatic proliferation in the mesentery and usually present with non-specific symptoms such as abdominal pain, swelling, or intestinal obstruction. Their variable presentation often delays diagnosis, which is frequently confirmed during surgical exploration. We report the case of a 25-year-old female presenting with abdominal swelling, pain, and nausea. Examination revealed a soft, non-tender right hemi-abdomi

Unicameral bone cysts are fluid-filled benign lesions that occur mostly in the long bones. Unicameral bone cysts in the pelvis are extremely rare. Continuous decompression using titanium or hydroxyapatite screws has been reported as a treatment. Screws made from a composite of unsintered hydroxyapatite particles and poly-l-lactide can be used for the treatment. An adolescent male patient presented with a unicameral bone cyst in the ilium extending to a region adjacent to the hip joint. As initial treatment, the cortex was fenestrated when the patient was 13 years old and β-tricalcium phosphate

OBJECTIVE: Subdural hematomas and hygromas are infrequently encountered complications of arachnoid cysts of the middle cranial fossa and are particularly rare with cysts of other regions. Reports in the literature focus on casuistic observations. Therapeutic recommendations often include fenestration or extirpation of the cyst wall, in addition to evacuation of the space-occupying lesion. This study evaluates the results of and rationale for a more conservative approach, usually without cyst removal.
METHODS: Sixteen cases of complicated arachnoid cysts, from a total of 658 patients with subd

INTRODUCTION: We suspected that paraovarian cysts of neoplastic origin may be underreported. This study was designed to evaluate our data on the pathologic characteristics of cystic lesions located in the paraovarian area and compare them with previous studies that claimed the vast majority of these lesions were simple paraovarian cysts and only few (1.69% to 5%) were neoplastic ones.
METHODS: This is a retrospective analysis of the clinical, surgical, ultrasonographic, and pathologic features of 59 women operated on for cystic paraovarian lesions at our institution from January 2002 to April

Echinococcosis, also known as hydatid disease, is an infection of larval stage animal tapeworm, Echinococcus. The larvae reside in the liver and lungs, producing multiloculated fluid-filled cysts. Imaging findings of Echinococcosis caused by E. granulosus are single, unilocular cyst or multiseptated cysts, showing "wheel-like", "rosette-like" or "honeycomb-like" appearances. There may be "snow-flakes" sign, reflecting free floating protoscoleces (hydatid-sand) within the cyst cavity. Degenerating cysts show wavy or serpentine bands or floating membranes representing detached or ruptured membra

BACKGROUND: Simple or unicameral bone cysts are common benign fluid-filled lesions usually located in the long bones of children before skeletal maturity. Pathological fracture is common, and is often the presenting feature.
AIM: The objective of the present study was to evaluate the results of titanium intramedullary nailing for the treatment of unicameral bone cysts with or without a pathological fracture.
METHODS: During the period 2001 to 2007, flexible intramedullary nailing for the treatment of a unicameral bone cyst was performed in 18 children. Four of these patients presented with a

PURPOSE: Several studies have shown an excellent success rate of communication enlargement surgery for popliteal cysts (Baker's cysts). Ultrasound-guided surgery can improve the accuracy of this procedure and may lead to better outcomes. This study describes a simple ultrasound-guided arthroscopic technique to manage popliteal cysts and reduce postoperative pain.
METHODS: After routine arthroscopic observation with a standard 2-portal approach, the arthroscope is redirected toward the posteromedial compartment from the anterolateral portal through the intercondylar notch. A posteromedial port
