The presence of galanin was examined in the cat gut and related autonomic nervous structures using radioimmunoassay (RIA) and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). In the gut wall, the concentration of galanin-like immunoreactivity (GAL-Lt) was assayed separately in the muscular layers with the nervous plexuses and in the mucosa and ranged from 0.35 to 0.55 pmol/g wet tissue. Precise localization of xanthine oxidase activity might elucidate physiological functions of the enzyme, which have not been established so far. Because xanthine oxidase is sensitive to chemical (aldehyde) fixation, we have localized its activity in unfixed cryostat sections of rat duodenum, oesophagus and tongue mounted on a semipermeable membrane. The quality of modern ultrasonography allows to study not only solid abdominal organs but also digestive walls and abdominal lymphnodes, leading to accurate diagnosis in many cases, and decreasing the use of more aggressive radiological procedures (upper GI baryum studies, baryum enema, intravenous pyelography, etc.). In dealing with abdominal pain in children, the plain XRay film of the abdomen and abdominal echography are performed immediately after history taking and physical examination, and are equally important in the work up of these cases.

Enzymatic and nonenzymatic components of the antioxidant system were studied in the erythrocytes, saliva and gastric juice of 20 healthy volunteers, 113 children with chronic gastroduodenitis and duodenal ulcerous disease. A decrease in the activity of superoxide dismutase and imbalance of the glutathione redox system were found both in the erythrocytes and the digestive secrets of children with gastroduodenal pathology. The rate of impairments depended on the gastric functional state, on the nature of disease development; the most pronounced alterations were detected in the gastric juice.

To study in vivo the contribution of the bacterial flora to amylomaize starch degradation in the rat, germ-free and conventional rats were fed on a diet containing either a normal maize starch or an amylomaize starch. The results of a global (general series of 3,270 episodes of upper gastrointestinal haemorrhage (UGH) admitted to our unit between the 15th of April 1983 and the 15th of April 1988 have been analyzed. The purpose of this study was to assess the frequency patterns of 8 digestive symptoms and related features, with regard to functional disorders, in young adults. A sample of 279 subjects, representing the student body at the Medical School of Brasília, filled up the self-report questionnaire. From 1980 up to nowadays, after total gastrectomy for gastric cancer, the intestinal continuity was assured by oesophago-jejunostomy and oesophago-duodenoplasty using stapling devices.
