This study examines the auditory ossicles of 55-56-day gestational age dog fetuses and shows that the basic three-bone middle ear pattern is already present, but the bones remain partly cartilaginous and are actively ossifying. The tympanic cavity contained a gelatinous, mesenchyme-like material, making dissection difficult. The malleus was the largest and most laterally located ossicle, with an oval head, short neck, curved manubrium, and notable variability in the anterior process. The incus had a rectangular body with short and long processes of similar length, and the lenticular process pl

Facial symmetry is paramount in societal perceptions of attractiveness, with symmetric faces receiving higher ratings. This is particularly relevant for individuals with microtia, a congenital condition affecting external ear formation, who often experience psychosocial challenges such as anxiety and depression. Auricular prostheses and High-density porous polyethylene (MEDPOR®) offer an aesthetic solution. However, they are related to disadvantages like color mismatches, periodic replacement, and skin infections. Currently, the Nagata technique, regarded as the "gold standard" for microtia tr

BACKGROUND: Relapsing polychondritis (RP) is a rare autoimmune disease. This paper reports a unique case of RP with rapid progression after surgery for lung adenocarcinoma.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 75-year-old man presented with a right upper lung mass on physical examination, which was finally diagnosed as invasive adenocarcinoma (stage IB) by pathology, and underwent thoracoscopic lobectomy without further chemotherapy or immunotherapy. Within 90 days after surgery, the patient developed shortness of breath, cough, and redness and swelling of the ear, and he was subsequently diagnosed with RP a

Mucormycosis is an uncommon and acute fungal infection, with high morbidity and mortality. Traumatic mucormycosis mainly occurs in military conflicts, civilian trauma, and vehicle accidents. Hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, and tsunamis also play a major role in causing mucormycosis by inoculation. Herein, we presented a case of trauma-related mucormycosis in a 70-year-old diabetic male. He referred to a specialty clinic due to the auricular swelling after having fallen and having a major trauma in his ear. Pathologic examination of necrotic cartilage revealed broad ribbon like aseptate hyphae.

A 26-year-old man with a history of congenital bilateral microtia, unilateral renal agenesis, left aural atresia, and right external auditory canal occlusion admitted for right rib cartilage graft harvest and left ear re-construction. Following surgery, an ulceration with violaceous borders and a yellow fibrinous base unresponsive to broad-spectrum antibiotics developed at the harvest site. The wound was expanding and not responsive to systemic broad-spectrum antibiotics. Biopsy revealed a dense dermal infiltrate of neutrophils with negative tissue cultures consistent with pyoderma gangrenosum

Treatment using the cell sheet technology has been applied to various organs, including the cornea, heart, esophagus, periodontium, cartilage, middle ear, and lungs. It has been shown that the therapeutic efficacy of cell sheet transplantation involves 2 aspects, supplementation of cells and provision of cytokines to the affected organ. In addition, cell sheet transplantation also promotes repair of damage through the paracrine effects of cytokines derived from the transplanted cells. It is known that in cases of cell transplantation by injection, the transplanted cells are less likely to diff

We report about a patient, who in 2005, as a 37-year-old, experienced a sudden, mild to moderate, mid-frequency sensorineural hearing loss in the right ear, along with tinnitus and mild dizziness. MRI of the temporal bone revealed a very small (1 mm) enhancing lesion in the second turn of the right cochlea after injection of contrast medium. Hearing gradually deteriorated, with complete hearing loss in 2015. At this time, an MRI scan showed a lesion completely filling the cochlea. The tumor was removed through a subtotal cochleoectomy. The cochlea was partially reconstructed with cartilage and

The incudostapedial joint (ISJ) is a synovial joint connecting the incus and stapes in the middle ear. Mechanical properties of the ISJ directly affect sound transmission from the tympanic membrane to the cochlea. However, how ISJ properties change with frequency has not been investigated. In this paper, we report the dynamic properties of the human ISJ measured in eight samples using a dynamic mechanical analyzer (DMA) for frequencies from 1 to 80 Hz at three temperatures of 5, 25 and 37 °C. The frequency-temperature superposition (FTS) principle was used to extrapolate the results to 8 kHz.

Chondroectodermal dysplasias are genetically heterogeneous group of disorders involving defects in one or more ectodermal appendages (hair, nail, teeth and sweat glands) in association with anomalies of the cartilage. In the present study a novel form of chondroectodermal dysplasia, segregating in an autosomal recessive pattern in a Pakistani family, was investigated. The clinical features including proportionate short stature, osteopenia with fracturing and breaking of bones, hypodontia, hypertrophic and convex shaped nails, night blindness, watering eyes and infection of ears were observed i

We report on six cases from four families with the newly described skeletal disorder diaphanospondylodysostosis (DSD). The characteristic radiographic findings included abnormal ossification of vertebral bodies, posterior rib gaps, missing ribs, and a downward tilt of the pubic rami, but normal long bones. The typical facial features of DSD cases were ocular hypertelorism, a short nose, depressed nasal bridge, and low set ears. Other distinctive findings included a short neck with bell-shaped thorax, and nephroblastomatosis. A history of consanguinity and affected siblings with unaffected pare

Hemifacial microsomia (HFM) and the branchio-oto-renal syndrome (BOR) are both associated with malformations of the external ears; preauricular tags, pits, or sinuses; and conductive or mixed hearing loss. Other overlapping features have been described, including cervical appendages containing cartilage in HFM, and facial paresis in BOR; however, the significance of these findings has not been discussed by previous authors. The purpose of this paper is to describe four additional propositi with overlapping features of BOR and HFM. In two cases there is a positive family history of either first

Genetic analysis has shown that the distal portion of mouse chromosome 12 is imprinted; however, the developmental roles of imprinted genes in this region are not known. We have therefore generated conceptuses with uniparental disomy for chromosome 12, in which both copies of chromosome 12 are either paternally or maternally derived (pUPD12 and mUPD12, respectively). Both types of UPD12 result in embryos that are non-viable and that exhibit distinct developmental abnormalities. Embryos with pUPD12 die late in gestation, whereas embryos with mUPD12 can survive to term but die perinatally. The m

Chondrodermatitis helicis, or painful nodule of the ear, is an uncommon benign aural lesion which is seen and treated by dermatologists and otolaryngologists. Because of the sparcity of reports in the recent literature, our experience with 50 patients over a 10-year period is presented. The diagnosis is based on history and physical examination and biopsy need be performed only to confirm the diagnosis in atypical cases. Patients are generally middle-aged or elderly males. There are no associated systemic disorders with this condition. The lesions are discrete, grey to red in color, oval shape

Microtia is a congenital malformation characterized by underdevelopment of the external ear. While chondrocyte dysfunction has been implicated in microtia, the specific cellular abnormalities remain poorly understood. This study aimed to investigate mitochondrial dysfunction in microtia chondrocytes using single-cell RNA sequencing. Cartilage samples were obtained from patients with unilateral, non-syndromic microtia and healthy controls. Single-cell RNA sequencing was performed using the 10 × Genomics platform. Bioinformatic analyses including cell type identification, trajectory analysis, an
